I work in the games press in the UK (GameSpot) and know Lauren and many of the folks mentioned here relatively well. I was disgusted to hear what happened in relation to the Eurogamer article this morning, and disagree that it was the right course of action for all concerned to take. But I also think that this story is starting to grow legs and walk further from the truth.

I believe we have a case of gross nativity on her part, but the removal of her information from various websites is an understandable (though ill conceived) defensive reaction to what must be a pretty awful night of internet interest in her, her friends and her past.

I'm happy that today's actions have forced a lot of the games press over here to reconsider the way they act. Those of us who take the work seriously have a disdain for those who act like spoiled children while working in an industry we are privileged to be part of. But in relation to Lauren's PAST work - I don't believe she was fooling or attempting to fool anyone. Anybody trying to do so wouldn't post about it all on public forums, blogs or twitter. Her deleting of certain information tonight is the work of a worried person - not somebody leading a double life.

Ooh, are we finally getting in to the glorified marketing that some OTs appear to be?

The MGS4 OP getting tangible gifts for his "support" for the game set an awful fucking precedent.

At least they're better now than they used to be. But yeah, OT's are still pretty weird. It's crazy to me how many people think they're echo chambers, and anyone with an issue with the game to discuss is treated like they're trolling.

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
Which proves the point he made on the article. In the end, the behavior of PR and "journalists" joining forces against the article actually proved the whole point of the article.

Unfortunately he ended up losing his job.

Didn't he quit though?

I do think it's hilarious and sad that metacritic averages can have a real impact on struggling developers, so that aspect at least is definitely unfortunate. Anyone have any legitimate numbers on how review scores impact actual sales?

Well, to be honest with aggregate scores it typically ends up getting things mostly close to right. There's very few low scoring games that are actually universally praised as good, but yeah you see ones that score too high... but you see that with movies as well. To ask all reviewers to ignore hype is a bit much, show me any entertainment platform where reviews are swayed at all by hype? There really isn't.

It's not the end of the world, but what's the purpose of video game reviews if they can't be trusted? We're being lied to, and although it's not the kind of lie that will cause serious harm, it is at least enough to cost people $60. Since we're on a video game forum, I think it's worth discussing a huge, glaring problem with the industry.

Yeah, but look at even universally praised games on GAF and you'll find people who don't like it. Reviews at best are a guide. Honestly I don't find them any more wrong or right than movie reviews.

It's a shame really for Lauren, everyone is making her out to be a scapegoat on this and effectively ruined whatever career she had as a journalist internet wise.

No doubt she did some dumb things earlier today, but now everyone is trying to rummage through her garbage and shove it into her face yelling "GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY"

Continue looking for more concrete evidence she's a shrill anyways.

Dude, she did this to herself. If she had kept her mouth shut nobody would've found her shabbily hid relationship with SE and in a couple days nobody would ever have a fuck that she was in that article. Total streisand effect

The problem is not Wainright. The problem is that someone can wrote Public Relations pieces for their company and they are published as articles on sites such as IGN. Their credibility has gone down the river.

Newsflash: Every game blogger is guilty of getting favors for doing favors. Companies love loyalty and they are willing to provide for the loyalty. Others are trying to hide behind her burned carcass and hoping they don't er spotted.

If I was writing an article, I would make sure I bring them all down. Now? Everyone is editing their shit left and right and hiding their skeletons in the closet.

I'm glad this has happened. Fuck bribery. Yes, providing goodies and calling it "press kits" is bribery. Remember when a company gave $100 or so of cheques for Dante's Inferno?

Damn, this whole thing keeps getting worse and worse for all parties involved. How deep does the rabbit hole go?

How are we tying Korina to Wainwright? LinkedIn?

The "rules" weren't present when it was made and I think, while bloated and overdone, it was a great work.

Of course it was great. But just because we have that rules that makes calling someone a viral marketer people in this board people stopped questioning shady stuff altogether. That thread deserved a second look by the community and the mods and at the very best it got backhanded comments and people awkwardly joking at the guy for taking a suspicious amount of time to make it.

ESPECIALLY nowadays.

I personally thought this years E3 was terrible.

Except for Watch Dogs and Last of Us being show maybe.

Well, it's an industry event but I think the biggest thing is that it is just not meant for us anymore. The experience seems kinda jarring when considering that some companies attending figured this out faster than others (Nintendo especially).

But on the subject of Nintendo... Has there ever been any talk on where they stand in terms of... what's the word... I dunno, but the entire "games journalism shrill" with swag, reviewer guides, etc?

She wrote a post saying Korina got her free games and gave her passes to game conventions when she was with Ubisoft and is now at SE hmmmmmm

So you're telling me there's no way we can detract attention from these no-talent shitlord "Journalists" and direct it at the REAL TALENT behind gaming?

"Video game journalists" are just massive charmless fanboys/girls who lack any ability to do anything worthwhile except create a bookmark in their browser to a Thesaurus and suck the metaphorical dick of the highest paying corporation/brand.

Absolute fucking wastes of space, all of them.

Man.... that's probably a little harsh. While I have no doubt most have them have encountered some ethical delimas, I would think at least a few have made the right choices. There are some who I still enjoy reading, even if I disagree with them.

That was embarrassing but at the same time it felt like something the journalists had no control over. They weren't asking for any 360s

On the flipside, it would be delusional to think that microsoft gave those 360s away just because they're nice people.

Right, but then you also have guys like Andy McNamara Tweet shit like this and it all begins to make sense. Oh, look who's on the cover of the holiday issue of GI. Shocking.....

why people act like this is news or something?

this is as old at the medium

i cant tell horror stories about the spanish gaming press since 1986 xD this is just the peak or the iceberg

Games blogger/enthusiast tries to act like journalist but tries to act like blogger/enthusiast when attempting to win PS3 but then hides behind her supposed journalistic integrity. This is rich.

I too enjoy reading gaming news (Steve Bauman for example is highly respected imo, as is Brian Crecente), however it's actual news that comes from actual credible journalists who have more than 'gaming' under their belt.

Here's how you can tell a good journalist from a "video game journalist":

- Their list of credentials involve more than gaming websites and blogs.
- They actually studied journalism.
- ???
- Actually, that's pretty much it.

Dammit, ShockingAlberto, come back here and explain yourself!

Please.

The guys who made the F1 2011 thread were given free copies of the game and t-shirts/caps.

He mentioned that MGS4 thread, not the F1 thread. Although that's also... Yeah.

I haven't payed too much attention, but has Geoff responded to all of the criticism yet?

nope, he isn't an idiot like this lass.

And what is there to respond to? Pretty damn sure he wasn't informed ahead of time that the set for the show was gonna be populated by 'goods'.

The pic is still hilarious though.

Didn't something like this happen in the NeoGAF Forza 3 thread? I don't want to be mistaken but I'm pretty sure I remember people in the thread getting early copies of the game for promotional reasons. Also, Che Chou (who was a Turn 10 Community Manager at the time) was constantly pimping the game on GAF.

I mean, he's being smart on this matter.

Lol share with us (me).

I was searching for some article related to the Hobbyconsolas and EA mess, but I can't find anything. There wasn't any factual proof as I remember, but we all knew that EA was paying them for good reviews.

I think it was soon after the horrible LotR RPG game getting a 93/100 that I stopped reading them.

As well should be the case.

Just because you've studied journalism doesn't make you good at it, or even reliable. The entirety of journalism has tons of people who fit that list and still make crap articles. Oh, and it's sad that people think that starting off in a non-journalism place makes you any more legitimate.

I'm all for burning liars at the stakes and stuff, but let's not bash every gaming journalist just because a few of them ruined it for the rest.
