vg247-PS4: new kits shipping now, AMD A10 used as base, final version next summer

I would prefer if its backwards compatible with PS3 but if it isn't I can live with it. But if it isn't backwords compatible with PSN titles then Sony got a huge problem.

This.
I don't really care about the retail PS3 games but I need my PSN games to come across to the PS4.

Maybe he likes those games. Or maybe he has a back catalog. Maybe there won't be any good ps4 games for awhile

What's stupid is wanting a system that plays less software and not more

Nintendo has bc. MS will probably have it too

I don't know about anyone else but I only have 4-5 HDMI ports and their nearly full already, nor do I want a PS4 if it won't play existing PSN games, collecting old tech is dumb and clutters up your entertainment center.

It's not simply a question of yields though. Mobo complexity and wiring will be higher with two discretes etc. Two sets of cooling components vs one. Etc. So they have to balance that against the yield issue and find what intersection of overall complexity and cost vs their performance target that makes sense. Even if you're losing a little on per chip cost vs two discretes the savings elsewhere may exceed that.

Yeah, you make a good point, didn't think about that.

Hoping they dont pull a Nintendo and let MS get ahead in the tech race. I don't want a 720 but if its more powerful....

I will never understand this line of thinking. For your sake, I hope the ps4 is as powerful, if not more, than the 720.

For me, I'll just get whichever will give me better multi-plat titles, so probably the more powerful of the two.

Killzone 2

He asked for tech demos, not pre-rendered movie.

Still tech demos are useless and serve no purpose other than misleading consumers.

oh damn..forgot about that trailer haha good times. I read the gaf thread on it recently too, was hilarious.

Fingers crossed for more of it for ps4 reveal. I think we will get an equal dose of great first party games at all events..well maybe not so much at TGs..but E3 and Gamescom for sure

new game by Sony Santa Monica
new game by Naughty Dog
new game by Sucker Punch
new game by Guerrilla Studios

:D it's gonna be gooood

It will have a discrete GPU, thats a given when you have a goal of 1080p60fps 3D!

That presumably depends on what kind of APU we're talking about, no?

A 4 or 6 CU APU of the ilk available in desktops today? Yeah, we're stretching.

But the 18-CU APU described in the last rumour would probably be able to 'do' something around PS3/360 720p/30 level graphics at 1080p/60/3D.

However...1080p/60/3D (or 4K for that matter) will be as much a capability as 1080p was for PS3. It's there but it won't be a typical target for games with high per pixel complexity.

I think there are a couple of secret studio exclusive IP in the work. Like one from Ready at Dawn

No BC means that system either costs $300 or if offers me some insane fucking value. This no BC thing is a real crock with home consoles at this point and it looks embarassing considering how well the PC handle it.

What is the difference between PSN games and retail PS3 games?

Less complicated programing relying less on the Cell SPUs, so they could be easier to emulate? I don't know but losings all my PSN games would be really really bad for sony.

well R@D did say they were going multi. But who knows, it's been a while and things very well could have changed.

And Quantic Dream has one more game also...but doubt we will see that for another 2 years or so.

Media Molecule also has a game that is unannounced but still early in development.

Polyphony must be working on GT6 too...so we might see a GT6 prologue

oh and w/e the heck Evolution studios are working on. I know one of the guys who was behind PGR is working with them now. Should be interesting.

and add w/e 3rd party exclusives they can net and we have a recipe of hype overload

thanks for the laugh

do you remember the PS3's goals?

sounds like it's being built around laptop parts. while this makes sense given the cooling/power requirements of modern GPUs, it probably isn't what you guys want.

Not until they officially reveal it,they won't have to 'hide' their specs either since sony always details them in the announce presser, the games would hopefully look great in the reveals too.

Wow, that's disappointing if true. I can't see Microsoft not releasing something more powerful than that, especially on the graphics side of things.

Why do you think that? MS also uses APU with even less powerful AMD Jaguar cores, and we dont known any dedicated gpu info for both consoles.

I know this isn't final, but an A10 base would be very underwhelming. I mean is their a secondary GPU as a kicker? If not, I think I'm going to pass this time on Sony.

The UI, however, has been revamped. It was said today that players will now be able to press the PS button mid-game and travel “anywhere” on the system. An example given was buying DLC from the PS Store mid-game then seamlessly returning to play.

4gigs of ram confirmed.

The “ultimate goal” for the hardware, we were told, is for it to be able to run 1080p60 games in 3D with “no problem,” to create a machine that’s powerful enough for “today and tomorrow’s market”

But, but, no way next gen consoles will run at 1080p! Buy a PC instead! lol.

Oh, man.

1080p has been a very common resolution for PC gamers for 4 years at least.

It would be a real shame if so called "next-gen" consoles can't run games natively at 1080p. I would hardly call that an achievement.

If they go 720p (which I doubt very much) then that's fine, it won't prevent me from getting the Orbis/Durango.

I have faith in santa monica, ND and GG....if sony shows off their games/trailers at the reveal I'm sure it will be nothing less than impressive

Good point. Plus with an APU approach you can get benefits from faster CPU-GPU communications.

Ofc,i'm hoping we get the official reveal as early as possible after the holidays.

I hope it will have keyboard/mouse support like PS3 but I hope it gets used for some games that make sense. FOr example Simcity or similar games. I don't like to play games on a PC but there are games like that or Football Manager that only make sense with a keyboard and mouse

One thing I'm curious is how there aren't much new info/rumors about the controller for the system. Maybe there won't be any drastic changes

I really think there's more to these specs then were being told. You don't throw out goals of running 1080p/60 in 3d and providing strong performance for today and tomorrow by releasing a console that will struggle to play today's games at high settings and high framerates.

I know people dismissed it quickly as the authors speculation but I do think there was some likeliness to the idea of next years line of lower wattage and cheaper amd gpus that provide increased performance likely being used in some way in these consoles.

I mean I can't imagine how Sony could convince themselves that a system with only a APU based on tech from this year will not only last them 5-7 years staring in 2013 but that it will be able to deliver on its stated goals.

Everybody has been saying next gen console won't run games at 1080p. That it's impossible. You need a PC. I never doubted it. I knew they would (well PS4 for now going with this article) be able to.

This should be an achievement to the doubters.

It'll be fine. PS3 already does 60fps 3D games.

Out of the box it can run BF3 Ultimate at nearly 30fps at 1080p...

In a console it'll run a lot more efficient, not to mention these aren't final specs.

So this is a win ? Wow, I had no idea expectations were that low. o_O

I fully expect 1920*1080 to be THE standard for next-gen.

x86 cpu

16GB ram in devkits

YES!

Devs know x86, no more weird (but powerful) POWERPC stuff. Awesome.
Look at how powerful the xbox 1 was compared to the competition.

Dammit, did not think of this.

Yes no way the A10 can emulate the Cell. No way.
http://www.techspot.com/review/580-amd-a10-5800k/

Wonder if its paired with a descrete gpu? Or maybe its good enough for 1080p60fps because devs can really code to the metal.

It would have to be paired with a discrete GPU, the A10 is definitely not powerful enough to power an entire next gen console.

Is no one questioning the legitimacy of this? I mean, it's another VG247 rumor about a next generation console and its specs...

I don't know what other stories they've had, but they were pretty bang on with their Vita stories. Even had a photo of the dev kit.

I was likely one of those people but many of us saying that were saying it won't have more than 4GB of GDDR5.

BIG difference if they have since switched to a different type of RAM and nothing to eat crow over since we were essentially right. =)
