The iPad Mini

I think the whole retina argument is bullshit, most of us have to deal with low-res products one time or another and have handled it fine in the past. The fact that a low-res screen puts you off when 5 years ago people were happy with 480x320 is laughable, it's just a matter of adjustment.

The only place you will notice retina are:

Hd movies
And zooming into pictures

I'm happy with resolution, any bigger and it would be a strain on the A5 chip.

Text is where retina is most apparent (IMO), but I agree, it's not a deal breaker for me.

Congratulations, you really deserve it!

I suppose you'd happily go back to watching movies on VHS too

Picked up a mini for the gf today, she's asking how the camera compares to the one in her iPhone 4S. What's the answer?
from the verge review:

In fact, its color tone and low light performance was better than what I've seen on many newer smartphones. It was sometimes difficult to get a clean image due to shakiness, but that has more to do with the odd physicality of taking a photo with a tablet than it does with the actual camera.

So it's either as good as the 4S, or somewhere between ranging in 4/4S. I'd bet on the latter.

I mean, a 24" 1080p monitor is pretty common for computer displays and that's only like 92ppi. I would've clearly preferred a retina display, but its not a deal breaker. I'm really happy with my Mini.

...hate me...
I just checked the mini today, a couple of hours ago. It's sex. Fuck retina, I want one!

Too bad that my plan was to go iPadless. Got a 64GB iPhone because of that, now I think I should cancel that to get a smaller one, and invest in iPad storage instead.

Kill me that after all these years they can't even be bothered to give us a choice to have it that way.

Truth. In my eyes, 4x5 looks downright sparse on a screen as big as the iPad and even the iPad mini. I use a 5x6 on my jailbroken iPad 3 which seems to be about the perfect density for the screen size. Still, everyone has different tastes, and it's a little ridiculous we've gone this long without them giving us such a simple option.

I don't remember where I got it, but here's a link to the file on my dropbox account. If anyone knows where it's from originally and can attribute it properly please do!

Andy Gilmore?

I was never comfortable reading in the dark with any ipad. even on the retina screen, it's the backlighting that gets me (even at 25%)

heck, I have a kobo glo with that, soft nice front light and I still much prefer turning on my nightstand reading light to make things easier on my eyes.

I don't know if resolution alone is enough to start headaches for most people but the backlighting (in a totally dark room) and slightly blurry text combo could.
I was going to say brightness can have a big impact on eye strain (along with ambient light). One question about that, how dim does the mini's screen get? The iPad 3 could get a lot dimmer than 2 (which itself could get a little dimmer than the first).

I just sold my iPad 3 to a relative; thinking that I no longer needed one since I got my Air, but I am seriously considering buying a mini. Are these thoughts crazy or should I really consider it?

Also: has anyone used Edge magazine (Newsstand) on the mini yet? And how is it?

I've sold and repurchased devices more times than I care to say

y'all should be ashamed

It is not as dim as the iPod Touch, but pretty dim. I'd say 10-15% brighter than the Touch.

So will it should be possible to reserve one for pickup tonight or tomorrow, correct?

Edit: if available obviously. Ah I see the option now, currently unavailable/updated nightly.

Well my Macbook screen finally broke for good, so it looks like it's time for me to get a Mini =P Is it available anywhere to buy within the next week or so? It's going to be awful going without a computer for more than a week.

So will it should be possible to reserve one for pickup tonight or tomorrow, correct?
Where?

On the official site they're opening up reservations updated nightly at 10pm.

already own an ipad 3 and iphone 5, and I'm considering buying this and replacing my ipad 3.

stupid tech lust

Same situation here. But I'm leaning toward keeping the Retina :/ Need to just pull the trigger before I lose my nerve.

The good thing about Apple products is the resale value. Might be ridiculous under most circumstances to be buying and selling these devices, but they keep their value pretty well.

Went to an Apple store in lower Manhattan this afternoon and there were about 50 people waiting in line to play with a Mini (they didn't have the display units out yet because of the hurricane). Everyone seemed to love it.

So I just go on apple.com at 10pm (or later), and order a 16gb for in-store pickup and I'm good to go for tomorrow?

Thanks, by the way, for answering my questions :D

Not with the stock camera app.

What are you all doing for watching youtube vids since the app is gone on ipad, I've been using the YouTube web app but it's garbage.

Jasmine.

Additionally, got rid of The New iPad for the mini. Retina is missed but brightness at max has helped alleviate any issues I've had with text. Battery life is still great even so.

Right now my setup consists of a 13 inch MBA (2012), 32GB black & slate Mini and a black & slate 32GB iPhone 5. Couldn't be happier, pretty much perfect. Wireless streaming, printing and syncing setup between all my devices.

Yes. I ordered a white 32gb last night - walked in on Sunday morning and picked it up right away (assuming the store near you has it available).

Almost caused a ruckus too. Was walking out and a woman was told they are sold out and the woman turns to me and goes, 'He has one!'. I just kept walking

When I go on the site I cannot find any in-store pickup options. It only directs me to fill out shipping information.
EDIT: I'll just wait to give it a try at 10pm. I appreciate the help.

This is why I don't really care for the "wait till next gen!" thinking (at least if the product is good enough that is). Sure I could wait for another year (or more if the next one isn't as hoped), or I could use it for the next year and flip it for a nice chunk of the next one when the time comes.

I use Jasmine but I imagine there's probably quite a few more by now.

Not sure, but I'd guess it will vary by location/stock. I read this morning that they'd be implementing the same reservation system they used in the past for iPhones etc. starting tonight.

Shows up as greyed out option on the last page before the "check out now" button. Edit: it's enabled now but showing no stock nearby

Ah, I see it now. Unavailable everywhere except for Kentucky Indiana. I'll just wait now and hope it becomes available.

We were able to walk in right as the local Apple store opened and get one today. They had everything but 16gb, not surprisingly they are the first to sell out.

A few Best Buys near me had the 64GB version available. However I can barely get myself to spend $330 -- let alone $430 or $530.

Checked pickup for black and white 16 and 32. Found white 32gb available a couple stores away, about 30min. No luck on the others.

It's amazing how many people can't deal with a non-retina display now. It's like having to look at one is worse than having their eyeballs gouged out with hot pokers. How did they ever get by before the iPhone 4 came out?
