THQ's stock drops 50% after earnings implosion, [Tanks 22%+ again, worth $7.95M]

So who should pick up Volition and SR if they go up for sale?

Warner seems like a perfect fit IMO.

I dont know where the WWE licence can go. WWE isnt popular enough for EA or T2 to give a shit about it and smaller pubs probably dont want to take the risk.

If you buy THQ, you buy a company that couldn't sustain itself despite some high profile IPs. You buy a company that has been losing money for a long period of time and couldn't make the hard decisions to either trim a huge load of fat or start to specialise. The much better option is to wait till it goes under and wait for the cream to rise to the top and put in a bid.

Btw, this is the future that companies like EA and Activision were hoping and actively striving for. Price the smaller companies out of the big budget market and get a larger slice of the pie for themselves.

Yep, and my old 2008 prediction thread is ever more validated: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=345381&highlight=console

About the next-generation:

3- There will be fewer publishers than ever (you can count around five or six big publishers total including Japan), and probably big media corporations like Disney, Viacom, Warner, etc., behind most of them. This is a result of the cut-throat competition going on now; there is simply not enough room for publishers to make enough money on games that have a high development cost due to the strong competition every year, and this is reinforced by online gaming where people are now playing specific games for longer periods of time, effectively ignoring new releases. Add to this the ongoing recession and it will only make things more difficult in the years ahead.

Eventually this reduced competition will give publishers some breathing room once more since currently even good games can end up unprofitable due to the fact that the market is too crowded. Less competition will mean higher sales and more stable corporate strategies.

You also buy all their debt. Since the people they borrowed money from will certainly want it back from you. Has anyone gone through their financials and figured out what their liabilities are? They must be massive.

Poor THQ. Get WWF No Mercy on PSN and you'll make millions! Really praying to the spaghetti monster to release South Park and Last Light.

the hundred million mentioned in the thread here is the only long term debt. Their current ratio looks to be just over 1 but I am wary of most of that being "other current assets" without having notes to check.

THQ has been dead to me since they downscaled the Warhammer 40k mmo.I wonder if we will get to see the fruits of the salvage attempt or Dawn of War 3 before THQ expires?

Surely some bigger publisher would buy this for 10 million. Seems worth it for the IPs alone.

Saints Row is really the only bankable title that they own. They have a lot of good games in their library, but that's the only one that puts up big numbers.

10 million? Thats how much it costs to make Foward onto Dawn. Ouch.

I guess it's karma for having regional pricing and treating a large portion of you're customers worse than another set.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
I'm sure you sell THQ for a dollar when you clean it out.

You seem to be forgetting that THQ's current debt stands at over $100m. If the company is put up for sale after being "cleaned out", where exactly is the incentive to purchase, even at a buck? After all, there's nothing left to steer THQ out of the red.

I've been staying away from videogames for quite some time now, but news like this reach even my ears.

I am sad.

Relic and Volition, please stay safe and sound. I need more good Warhammer40k games, and I love the Saints Row franchise.

$11 million? Let's start an IndieGoGo campaign to buy them.

Better to wait until they go under and then just scoop up the IP. You wouldn't want to buy it now and have to deal with their payroll, debts, real estate etc. If I won the lottery though, I'd offer a million just to get my hands on the Saints Row IP and hire devs to create an MMORPG.

With $50 million just in Accounts payable and a $10 million market cap? Bankruptcy is more likely, then IP scavengers at better pricing.

They also have 80 million (might be old quarter) in accrued expenses on top of accounts payable.

And if customer advances of 144 million means what I think it means, they have a bunch of undelivered product they have already been paid for, so they have done all they can to shift there future revenue into the current quarter.

They have a serious cash flow problem, and are probably already starting to miss payments simply because they have no margin to manage the routine fluctuations between accounts receivable and accounts payable.

Yeah your only buying the responsibility to pay contracts and debts for $10M :D
Not the best deal in the world.

Really its the stage where it can only be bought by someone to own a publisher, so no existing publisher is likely to sail in to the rescue. Anyone in the games industry will just wait to see what scraps they can get from the selling off of assets.

Man, that Montreal studio seems like a terrible place to work right now.

Well, at least in Montreal there are like 50 different studios who are hiring.

Volition in Chicago and Relic in Vancouver unfortunately don't have this luxury.
