Wii U Press Previews

Vanillalite

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
IGN have their review dates here:
http://uk.ign.com/wikis/ign-review-calendar/Game_Release_Dates_2012

So:

Nov. 13
Ninja Gaiden 3
ZombiU

Nov. 15
New Super Mario Bros. U
Nintendo Land Wii U

Nov. 18
Assassin's Creed III
Darksiders 2
Just Dance 4
Rabbids Land
Scribblenauts Unlimited
Sing Party
TankTankTank

I know those are review dates, but can people talk about their playtime with the system before then in detail other than what Audrey mentioned?

I was hoping we'd get some Wii-U impressions on the podcasts for this weekend.

Will QA for food.
I'm glad to know ZombiU will have reviews out before launch. It's the title I need to know about the most before I bite.

Aside from short video clips (up to 10 minutes of a single game, but only in 30 second non-consequetive increments) I think they are pretty much blacklisted from saying anything else.

Anyone figure out why the Wii U console is so long?

So long? It's only about another inch or two more so not bad. It's really amazing they fix a whole second wii into that space (someone is going to make the joke, may as well be me this time)

at last, for christ's sake

You won't avoid the finger prints on the Game Pad and controller anyway. Easy enough to just wipe the few you have the console off as you stick it into its spot near the television. Black CC Pro was a horrific finger print magnet, and this is going to be the same.

Yup, I'd suggest also buying a lint-free cloth to clean them with...like those cloths you can get in opticians to clean glasses.

surprised all reviews are not embargoed till launch day. And hopefully this means those 4 games being reviewed before launch are deemed as great quality by Nintendo, and a way to generate early buzz.

otherwise if the reviews turn out bad it could hurt sales and hype a bit.

Why even unbox if you're gonna sound bored as fuck with it

Unboxing vids are for people who are so excited for something new, they can't contain themselves during the presentation

Ok maybe that's kinda taking it a bit far, but still

Well i found GB's own entertaining, well as entertaining as these unboxings could be, not sure why they have to be overly enthusiastic in showing this stuff though. It's not even like it's their first time being around a wii u or anything or many of those given accessories.

Many of us agree. I think it's certain the visuals are okay and the gameplay isn't completely polished, but can the atmosphere and intensity drive it to be an excellent exclusive? Well have to wait and see.

Quite a few of the unboxings just seem very uninformed. As if they had no idea what to expect in the box at all, or what sort of ports the system would have.

You figure too these idiots have been reporting on this stuff. They should know what the fuck was in there. It's no wonder Nintendo continues to care less/interact less with the gaming media.

So now that retail units are out there has anyone reported actual battery life for the Wii U Gamepad?

Can you use the RCA cable from the Wii with the WiiU?

Does WiiU discs have scratch resistant coating like PS3 Discs have?

IGN: What We're Learning About Wii U
Some stuff has already been mentioned, but there is some new stuff there.

SDHC max is 32GB (according to IGN).

The way Wii backwards compatibility works is like so:
On Wii, you could simply insert a GameCube disc and access it through the system's main grid-like menu. Simple enough. Wii U's backwards compatibility is more complicated than that - the system appears to effectively boot into a mode dedicated to running Wii software.

If you're wanting to play your Wii Virtual Console, Wii Ware or original Wii software, you'll need to access the Wii application from your main Wii U interface. What's more, you'll need to use the Wii remote to navigate this environment, just as you did with the original system. It's also worth noting that WiiConnect24 functionality will not work.

Better too much than too little!

I'm still concerned because it sounds like it's just a universal TV remote, which is useless to me. When you use an AV receiver to control volume and a DVR/set-top box to change channels, etc., where does the GamePad fit in? It doesn't sound like it can handle anything that complex.

Nintendo have said in a past PR that Wii U also works with cable boxes and DVRs. Just put in the model (and possibly number) and it works.

Yeah that backwards compatibility is pretty rough. At least it exists though, I don't have high hopes for it being present in the next Sony and Microsoft systems at all.

I seriously hope they at least manage to get native emulation for VC working at some point instead of sticking to this backdoor Wii junk.

Oh yeah the Wii mode sounds terrible. Really, Nintendo? I can understand it for motion based games, but I should not have to go through all that to play a virtual console title. Why not just have a sleek VC app on the home screen that takes you to a nice UI with your VC games?

I'm sure it's plenty functional, I was just hoping for something a bit nicer/neater.

Do we know or think USB powered external hard drives will work? Or only external hard drives that have their own power supply?

This is the biggest question for me right now before pulling the trigger on a hard drive.
