ME3, NG3:RE, Batman, EM2, WO3, BLOPS2, Darksiders 2 have technical issues on Wii U

Didn't Activision already comment on the Wii U port being HD... But not 1080p.

Why is this a shock?

They said "full HD". This is very vague. They clearly did not mean 1080p, despite this being the term for 1080p, so this means this information is not really exact. Were they comparing it to the resolution of Black Ops 1 for Wii, which wasn't in HD? Or were they comparing it to the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of Black Ops 2? We can't say until we get perfect screenshots to compare them.

yeah they said that... Full HD..

Back when Black Ops 2, of which is shown above, was officially announced to be releasing on the Wii U, Treyarch stated that the game will be running at 60 frames per second in 1080p resolution. Upon this announcement, many fans were surprised at the Wii U would be able to render Black Ops 2 at these specs, especially in native 1080p resolution.

Sadly, it seems that the Wii U will actually not run Black Ops 2 at a native 1080p resolution. Yesterday, on October 12, this information was revealed by GotGame. Through an e-mail response from Activision, it is stated that Black Ops 2 is not natively 1080p on the Wii U. From the looks of it, it appears that the Wii U will be up-converting Black Ops 2 to 1080p, not running it natively.

I don't remember Activision ever saying a COD game was HD in their PR.

Only HD console game was COD1 on XBLA.

If the game outputs in 720, they're not lying. They're probably just saying HD because its Wii U and that a feature.

I mean, maybe it performs better than 360, but it's hard to bet on.

I wouldn't trust any PR speak about res. Just wait for pixel counters.

On streams game appears to run well and look like COD. Looks like a competent port from what I saw.

Obviously I agree with "wait for digital foundry", but do we have any ETA on that?

I know Eurogamer have had their Wii Us for a while. Hopefully we shouldn't have to wait too long for the Digital Foundry verdict now the thing's out in the US and all the embargos are up.

I really do wonder why they would switch to realtime rendering for that scene.

I'd have to assume they wound up doing most of those cutscenes in realtime on the Wii U, if not all of them. Maybe they had the budget to try that out or something?

It's weird, since the size of the discs would make it very easy for them to bring over the 1080p FMV they used for the PC port.

The Wii U version of Black Ops 2 doesn't appear to be complete shit, praise the heavens.

Might be too early to tell but that one pwn dude was playing a lot of it and while you can't judge properly on shitty streams, he implied it wasn't crap.

Treyarch did really good things on the Wii (they got around the no-patching thing, for instance, and made a patchable game). I'd assume that the same small team of people that put a respectable amount of effort into the Wii ports did the same for the Wii U port, as the Wii remote control scheme with the awesome IR remains intact.

I don't think blops2 will be running at 60 fps, any of you expecting it will be thoroughly disappointed.

Why is that? A fairly consistent 45-60fps is what the other versions run at.

I love the idea that people are comparing shadow resolution when at least one of the two things being compared is FMV. Pretty good microcosm of quality GAF analysis.
Part of that was me under the assumption they were both realtime.

My argument is invalidated on one of the screens. Still the others to explain though.

He has different suits in AC anyway, I'm surprised they'd prerender them to begin with.

The game ran in 3D on the 360, PS3, and the PC, which necessitates the need to prerender those cutscenes. The PC version is over 16 gigs as a result, because it has 1080p FMV in both 2D and 3D.

Doesn't look like there's any characters shadow in that BLOPS2 vid.

For all the bitching about Activision, they actually supported the Wii pretty strongly.
Wii U also seems to have got a strong port.

I suspect Activision just having some talented people at their studios is what gives them that edge. Also actually budgeting for another console release; unlike you know...EA.

I wasn't a fan of mode 7. Those overhead levels in Contra 3:The Alien Wars were the final straw for me. I wish I could have a remix with those levels omitted. The rest of that game was mint except for those 2 mode 7 levels.
I believe that's what Contra 3 for the GBA was. They omitted those two stages in favor of new side scrolling stages.

However, I feel it messed with the balance a bit as alternating stages was always a part of the Contra experience and it sort of drones on without them.

So the preview versions of Batman were indicative of the final game. Great. I've been telling you guys for months now that the game would end up being one hell of a lazy POS port. I asume they even left the horrible sensitivity settings (including dead zones) for the gyro aiming intact. They basically just used Analog stick settings for gyro controls.

Pathethic.

It's the usual launch shovelware crap, and people should seriously stay the fuck away from it.

Still sad that my worries manifested in the final game.

Doesn't look like there's any characters shadow in that BLOPS2 vid.

It's two player local mode. I asume the graphics will be downgraded to allow two full screen displays at once.

That's what it was. I looked at the footage and something just looked off to me. Maybe they turn em off when you play on the TV and gamepad at the same time?

I'd rather have the shadows turned off then the game running at a worse res tbh.

There are shadows. You can see them on the guy in the doorway at 0:42. But they're really faint and yeah, I suspected this was because it's running essentially split-screen.

EDIT: Actually, by the looks of it, there's no dynamic shadows at all in the Wii U video, including from the environment, which are present in the quoted footage. It's all baked or removed. Would like to see non split screen footage.

Pointer controls.
No sound.

Well he is playing "split screen" so naturally there is some sort of fidelity drop going on there. We'll have to wait and see on how the game stacks up in singleplayer/online.

Am not seeing any difference with this Xbox stream, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6RC5ECWGVs

other than:
- Video recording quality
- Pointer Controls
- Lack of sound.

Quality makes it hard to really compare. Hopefully we get some more impressions. And yeah didn't realise he was playing split. Its difficult looking at any WiiU video without knowing whats going on in the rest of the room lol.

You can see the complete shadow mapping missing from the environment.

Yeah dude it looked off cause of pointer controls..

Yeah this. There's no dynamic shadow casting from anything in the Wii U video. Wouldn't surprise me to see that nuked to maintain a high framerate at ~720p during split screen, but I'd still like to see native online/solo footage to compare.

Right, am just saying what I think am seeing. No need to get snarky; I want to know the quality of these ports as much as anyone.

I was looking at the shadows of the players. Stream quality is very low in comparison but it does look as if the only lighting effect is the deck now you mention it.

EDIT: Second half of the xbox video shows similar lighting btw.
Best example of the lack of dynamic is the doorway when the light is shining in. Not present in the WiiU version on show here.

Yeah, wow, it really is missing all of the shadows.

Are we sure this is splitscreen? I certainly hope so.

Other video. I don't know the map so can't get a comparison:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp2eoBIQ2Yc&feature=channel&list=UL

His lightings very dull so hard to tell but looks better here.

His capture stuff is just poor, its unwatchable in 720 on youtube.

It's identical to the 360 version (from what I played, but the recording quality is very problematic to say anything beyond that)

That video has the proper dynamic shadow casting from both characters and the environment.

So it's probably turned off in split screen.

Are there videos of the 3D "splitscreen" option that are available? I asume they use the same settings as this dual screen setup.

You can see right here. The shadows coming through the Window in the WiiU footage are baked while they are using dynamic shadows on 360.

Not saying you're wrong, but I don't understand how you could tell from a single screenshot where the only lightsource is the sun and the time of day is fixed. There's nothing about that scene that demonstrates dynamic lighting or shadows.
