Fire Emblem 12 (DS) Fan Translation |OT| Like Shadow Dragon, but good

I've already played the patch that only translates the menus, and this game is AMAZING. Definitely one of the best in the series, and fixes EVERYTHING that was wrong with Shadow Dragon.

Really that entire stupid name change drama should have been avoided by just not posting a poll. Change the name, and that's it. They'd know when the patch game out.

So how are you guys approaching this one? It's been awhile since I've played a Fire Emblem game...I'm usually the "everybody lives or I hit the restart" and "carefully pick who will make up my team ahead of time" type.

For this one though, I'm considering just taking it on in more of a "whatever happens, happens" outlook. I'm not gonna evaluate character stat growths/tiers, and instead just pick them based on how much I like the actual character. Oh, and whoever dies, stays dead.

Not sure what brought about this change in me...I think I just don't have the time/energy to map things out so thoroughly anymore.

You could always play on Casual if you don't want to worry about deaths.

There's that, but the fear of permadeath kinda adds that extra bit of spice to the gameplay and attachment to characters. I think I'll just play it and accept whatever happens. What do you guys usually do? And will you stick to it or change it up for FE12?

The Heroes of Shadow released the readme. Included is a list of known bugs and the reasons they still exist:

We'll spare you the details, but translating a video game is NOT easy, especially when you must reverse-engineer it. As such, there are some tiny glitches that we cannot fix right now or ever.

A. During dialogue, character names get cut off towards the bottom of the name box.

Fix: Too complicated. We've asked for help, but nobody knows how to fix it. We DO want to fix it though.

B. The text rewind function (press R when in dialogue) cuts off towards the far right.

Fix: Available, but apparently causes graphical glitches.

C. Various graphical oddities in the Wi-Fi setup utility. Notably, when creating a new connection, there is a mysterious "blank" option in the middle of "AOSS" and "Manual Setup". If you press this option, nothing will happen, but you can press B to cancel.

Fix: Probably not worth the time.

D. The white horizontal lines under the location names in the world map dialogue are inconsistently sized.

Fix: Possible, but hardly important.

E. Some of the dialogue
is spaced rather awkwardly. Kind of
like this.

Fix: Possible, but requires a LOT of time and effort, and doesn't really affect much. The main body of Prologue I to Chapter 11 and the first 30 or so base conversations (in Event Recap order) are largely free of awkward spaces.

F. Emulator bugs: these are nothing to do with the patch and thus are not our responsibility to fix.

NO$GBA:

i. Missing sound effects, eg. damage, walking sounds
ii. Top screen during chapter openings looks like a glitched mess

Other:

iii. Some music makes your speakers cracklezzz. Particularly the opening demo and the title screen musics.

Play with permadeath, reset if character dies. That's how I roll.

I played with Casual but I still reset whenever my characters died. Provided it was early enough in the chapter. It was nice being able to play through a long chapter with a ton of good growths and accidentally get a character killed and know their growths were still intact.

Plays any DS cartridges no matter what region. But of course you can't play the patched version.

I thought that DSi-enhanced games like FE12 were region-locked for both DSi and 3DS, and that you'd need an original or Lite model if you're importing.

I thought only the DSi exclusive (i.e. can't be played on a DS lite at all) games were region locked.

Edit: Just looked it up and you're right. Sorry.

But what about if I dump the cartridge to a flash cart that works with the 3DS:

Q - Will DSi games run?
A - DSi games will only run on a DSi-mode flash cart (which is currently only the CycloDS iEvolution). Just because a flash cart works on the DSi/XL does not mean it runs in DSi mode. Most carts run in DS mode, as DSi mode is a very recent thing to unlock. DSi-enhanced games will run in DS mode on a normal flash cart. Basically if your flash cart doesn't have DSi mode, then your games will run as if you're using a DS (even if you're actually on a DSi/3DS).
Or is there no flash cart that runs DSi-enhanced games on a 3DS?

All pretty convoluted to me since I'm entirely new to the flash cart 'scene'.

Flash carts will run DSi-enhanced games in DS mode, so you don't get whatever DSi enhancements the game has, but the game works, and on any region DSi/3DS.

I can't say I'm absolutely sure of the answer, but going by the quote you provided, it sounds to me like the last part answers it. If I'm not mistaken, FE12 could still be played on any flash cart despite being a DSi-enhanced game because it should be treated as a normal DS game if the flash cart doesn't support a DSi mode, meaning it ought to be playable on a DSi or a 3DS assuming that neither block the flash cart or something.

Edit: Thanks for confirming it, Aena.

Wonderful, don't care about DSi enhancements but I want to play it on my XL.

Well, the latest 3DS update upped the flash cart blocking. A couple of them got updates, but many didn't, so if you're going to buy a flash cart expressly for this, make sure to do some research.
EDIT: Oh, you probably meant DSi XL. Less worries in that case.

It is awesome that this translation is complete finally. I did enjoy Shadow Dragon a lot for its challenge even if its system was very basic and the dull story.

Is it possible to avoid 3DS updates while still having wi-fi turned on? I think I've got the latest update in, so I'll do some research and see if 3DS flash carts are updated enough to deal with it.

Uhh, so how do I get this game?

Edit: But no explanation how. Am I missing something?

The Heroes of Shadow are only releasing the translation patch, not the game itself! If you want the game, you can import it. If you don't want to import it, you'll have to find some other way to play it without a cartridge.

Pretty sure that literally the only "DSi Enhancement" on FE12 was Region Locking.
I can't think of any instance where a DSi Enhancement was all that important, though I've also never played a DSi game. As you said, it's only really worth discussing in the sense that it makes games more difficult to play as a rom.

Hijacking thread to ask about the best flashcart to use with an xl. Had the game for a while but I'd love to finally play it on my dsi.

The enhancements aren't really important, so to speak. I've heard cases where games like Sonic Classic Collection actually run better because they're enhanced and are being run in DSi mode, taking advantage of the slightly better DSi hardware. Pokémon Black & White (and their sequels) are probably the most obvious examples of enhancement, since they have the Xtransceiver item that allows face-to-face communication with other players using the cameras of the DSi or 3DS, which you obviously can't use with older models.

I never understood the criticism for SD. It wasn't the best FE ever, but it was very respectable, and a great game.

Sure, the graphics are a disappointment, but whatever, it's FE, meaning the only way to play it is removing all graphic effects.

Excited for this patch.

I will buy one of those flash cards just for this. I bought the game even if I cannot play it. I bought a GBA flash cart years ago for Fire Emblen 6 and Mother 3 and it was totally worth it.

I echo those above me asking for a good cart to use on my DSi and my DSiXL.

Welp, time to dig out Shadow Dragon and actually complete it (and try to find a Flash Card that works on a 3DS XL).

Am I wrong in assuming that flash carts for 3DS will work on the 3DSXL?

I have no idea. I know Aeana mentioned somewhere that recent 3DS firmwares lock out certain flash carts, but finding info on this subject is harder than I would have expected.
