Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

Yeah I'm worried about my 670/ i5 3570k combo. I want 60 frames, but I want my game to be pretty.

cant wait to see.

Thinking about OCing for the first time. Just not sure how yet

GTX560 here and I7 2500k, game runs super sweet on the 1650x???? resolution. All on high & very high.

ps: don't be fooled by the opening sequence where there's mouse delay. It's just for the intro.

Game looks very hot. Love the colors.

Can you run DX9 anti aliasing? I prefer to run games at 720p with AA rather than 1080p considering Im using my TV, and you have a near identical machine to my own.

Unless you cap the frame rate that won't make a difference, it'll just render more frames.
88C should be fine, but if you clean the dust away it'll be cooler and more quiet. Then you could buy some dust filters so that you don't have to clean dust from the inside of a computer again :p

You're right. Don't like the level of detail on the lower settings anyway.

Ugh my game crashes every time I ALT+TAB. Kind of annoying. Also, be weary of where in the world you fall/step. I got stuck in between some rocks/water trying to get to a radio tower. Only way to really proceed was to drown myself. It's a pain.

But really, this fucking game. Wow; totally blown away by it. Felt like that first time playing FC2, but without the frustrating spawning. Driving in this game is so fun; when you crash, it feels real :D

Gun-play isn't half bad. The guns have a nice feel to them.

As soon as I start shooting in DX11 my framerate goes down the shitter.

Someone on Guru3D had a similar problem, make a single bullet hole and his FPS takes a massive dump.

This game has problems. Did they release the Day 1 patch or is that still in the pipeline?

Can anyone tell me what's going on here? I get weird graphical glitches that make the game unplayable. They seem to pop up randomly while I'm playing and once they turn up they won't go away. I have the exit the game and start it again to actually get it to work.

I'm running:

i5 2500k @4.2ghz
GTX570
Latest Nvidia beta drivers 310.64

Any ideas? The game is unplayable at the moment. Is it a DX11 issue?

I got a patch 1.0.1, so I guess so.

2560x1440, GTX 670 SLI, 2500k @ 4.4, 310.64 drivers.

HDAO, Alpha coverage off, MSAA at 2x I get around 50-60fps

And then I shoot, and it tanks to 10-30

Shit's unplayable. DX9 runs at 70-90fps with no drops. A shame, really.

1920x1200, DX11, no msaa (game uses some kind of smaa), SSAO, Fov=85, Settings ultra but shadows on high. Using only 2x480GTX, perfect 60 fps every time in singleplayer (first 2 hours) and co-op.

SLI DX10 compat. bits changed to 0x0C1902F5 for fix dinamic decals sli bug.

First shot direct feed, others downsampled with IrfanView

Guess I was running 1.01

Seems there's little hope of improvement over this. Apparently everyone else on lower-end setups can run the game 3x better than me.

Corky

Nine out of ten orphans can't tell the difference.
It barely looks smoother/nicer. It might have more of an impact in motion. But anything more than 1 fps trade off doesn't seem worth it.

Think the performance hit for me was 20%-ish, went from 30 to 24. Can't tell a lick of difference in motion either for that matter.

Just set the game to borderless-windowed mode :)

And it might be because I'm tired but something in Far Cry 3 makes me feel nauseous and the only other game in my life that did that was Gravity Rush. I have no clue if it's the heavy camera movement or the motion-blur but I wish I could turn the blur off :/

Not a glitch. When they said the jungle would consume you, they literally meant it.

Ahh good suggestion thank you!

To quote myself, this is happening in DX9 mode as well. It just happened and forced me to quit. Ugh. Any ideas?

Anyone know exactly what PostFX is doing? Going from Medium to Very High is like a 12* increase on my GPU and I can't see any visual difference.

I know PostFX adds in motion blur.

Ah well, won't miss that.

Well I've finally found the magic combination between rock solid 60FPS, decent settings and my GPU / CPU staying quiet as the grave.

The game itself is whoa, so much better than I had expected. I so want to explore and experience! Although the HUD / Minimap is a HUGE turn-off, ruins the immersion completely for me - Look at that damn thing! Awful placement as well.

which is ? <3

everything I'm trying feels laggy at the moment :/ GPU usage is 60ish % across both cards

Yeah :( Seems no option to disable it either. Hope Ubi patches it in or someone comes up with a fix.

Currently my settings are

2560x1600

Vsync: 1 Frame

GPU Max Buffered Frames: Off

DirectX 11

No MSAA

No Alpha to Coverage.

HBAO ( Best AO of the 3 in my opinion ).

FoV: 80

- Quality Settings

Textures: Max
Ambient: Max
Shadow: High
Post FX: Medium ( It's a hog )
Geometry: Max
Vegetation: Max
Terrain: Max
Water: Max
Environment: Max

That gives me a solid 60FPS, never dips. Decent looks, my GPU staying at 58* and is awfully quiet plus there's no stuttering or anything for me.

Remember, do not Vsync in the Nvidia control panel / Inspector.

What's the game's default fov?

You are welcome! :D And is Post-FX really such a hog? :/ I ask because I usually set post-processing to the highest possible setting as I love these effects.

Hmm when I think of it it might be the same problem I had in Crysis 2 where the post-process setting had a bunch of very different settings bundled...

no HUD area option to move that shit straight to the corner is a huge bummer

Holy... Sethos you are right, whatever Post Processing on Ultra and Very High does, it isn't funny anymore o.o I dropped it to High and it's like a night and day difference, I can now have most other things cranked up and get near 60fps with a 6850 :D

Though I really wish somebody would tell us what effects we are now missing.

Turn down the AO! Why in the world is his elbow shadowing the ground 30 feet behind him? The AO is outrageous in this game. I hope there's a setting for that.

Have to admit, this game has one of the best suns I've seen in any game, really well done and coupled with the shaders on the grass it looks fantastic. Light rays obviously also help.

( Looks better in motion )

Problem with this game is just the inconsistency. Look left and you have a beautiful sunset, skew a bit to the right and it's ruined by a shitty texture, crappy DoF that should have been a distant bokeh, a terrain LOD that drops off after 10 meters and the object LOD as well.

thanks !

found out what my problem was : Borderless Window ...

Setting it to Full Screen solved the sluggishness

MSAA 8x also feels makes the mouse feel laggy, 2x less so but it's still there

in the end I settled on your settings, as that gives me anywhere between 60 and 100 fps on 1080p

So. I'm running at ultra settings with no AA, and downsampling from 2048x1152.

I'm getting an average of 45 FPS with my 670. I have NOT downloaded and installed the new Nvidia drivers yet, though

Nice. You also have to remember, windowed / borderless windowed makes your GPU go into 2D mode, disables SLI etc.
