Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

WHAT IN THE FUCK.

Something must be wrong. I moved the game to my SSD and now its running at 60+ fps with ALL settings at max, even MSAAx8.

Have my game installed on an SSD, changes nothing outside of load times. Sounds like something else is up, settings not applying properly ( Happened to me ) or something like that.

Can anyone tell me what's going on here? I get weird graphical glitches that make the game unplayable. They seem to pop up randomly while I'm playing and once they turn up they won't go away. I have the exit the game and start it again to actually get it to work.

I'm running:

i5 2500k @4.2ghz
GTX570
Latest Nvidia beta drivers 310.64

Any ideas? The game is unplayable at the moment. Is it a DX11 issue?

That looks like the artifacting I got when my old video card died. Happening in any other game besides FC3?

ooh found an even better setting

2880*1620 (60 Hz) downsampled , with the V-Sync 1 frame thing

flawless 60 fps

have to forgo the 120 Hz smoothness, but the downsampling is worth it I guess. Besides it was doing 80 fps most of the time, so it's not that much of a downgrade :)

edit : that's on a 2600K @ 4.8 GHz, GTX 670 SLI @ 1240/3800 , with the settings Sethos posted earlier

Got the same kind of problems a couple of weeks ago (with BLOPS2 and a couple of other games). I was sure my GPU was about to die but I updated Windows and all the glitches went away.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Putting Post Process to Medium has vastly increased my frame rate under DX11. I don't notice any difference visually.

Also, putting textures to medium removed a ton of stuttering, and again I notice zero difference in quality. I actually screenshotted 3 different areas with medium and high textures set, and couldn't discern anything.

Those seem to be the two big killers in the quality menu.

This is on a 660ti 2 gig running with 12 gig system memory.

Any PostFX above Medium brings my GPU to 99% load, though unfortunately it's basically mandatory to get the AO to look nice.

I still dont know wtf dx11 do. Cant se any diffrence only much lower fps. Please someone explan.

Shadow filtering is different. And it allows MSAA.

I get no difference in FPS with SLI on or off. I wonder why sli isn't working. Fully maxed, DX11, MSAA 8, I get about 30 fps. If I drop MSAA to 4 I get about 40. Now if I could just get my other GPU to kick in.

Running 2 670s. In theory.

Wow that is in fact a pretty bad transition, I guess they got really lazy, I read somewhere that it had a pretty nice atmosphere though.

Did you add the DX11 .exe to the Nvidia Inspector profile

Uh...no? I'm pretty new to these waters. Time to do some googling.

Download Nvidia Inspector, click the little wrench icon somewhere in the middle right-side, search for Far Cry 3 at the top search bar, click the little window with blue edges and a green plus that says "Add application to current profile", browse to your FC3 folder and add "farcry3_d3d11.exe", hit "Apply Changes" in the previous window and you're good to go.

Need the latest .64 drivers as well.

An Nvidia oversight.

Thanks! Works like a charm.

Between 55-60 now. Hopefully it'll stay this way once the action ramps up. With MSAA at 4.

Damn this thread... my 680 is ready.

And if that first graphics test is to be believed, it looks like I may finally have a legit reason to upgrade from my 920 i7 to a 3770k.

I think I'm going to hold off on getting it to see if there's a fix for the hud and performance. I've still got a lot of games waiting but the hype for this has pushed it near the top of my queue.

^ this is what I'm seeing with the HUD. Just terrible.

That AO on the grass looks like a custom crysis config gone horribly wrong.

2500K @ 4.4 GHz
670 @ 1300/3500
1920x1080, DX11, all the quality settings maxed, HBAO, MSAAx2, alpha to coverage off (this one was a big killer) nets me ~55fps with some very rare drops into the 48-50 range. Ehh I'll take it. I wish SMAA just worked though :<

I just did a clean install of the latest Nvidia drivers and played it in DX9 for several hours with no problems. Very strange indeed. I'm going to try it in DX11 again and see if it's fixed or not. I surely hope the GPU isn't dying, it's not very old.

I don't get it whats the matter? The fact that its sunny when it rains and then gets darker? That does happen in the Caribbean from time to time. I'd imagine it does in South East Asia too.

I'm sorry, you do realize that GIF is in realtime right? As in clear sky, starts to rain, goes grey and POP a perfect storm sky in 8 seconds.

I've seen a few tropical storms form in my time and it ... it doesn't look like that.

Seems I got excited too early.

When I'm walking around, checking things out, I'm at a nice, solid 60 fps. The second I shoot an animal, or my gun even, it tanks hard to 20ish. Shame. Hopefully it's an optimization/patch issue, and not lack of hardware.

Oh, I'd assumed you sped the GIF up. Assuming makes an ass out of you and me, except in this case I'm the only one who looks like an ass.

Open up Nvidia inspector again, find the field where it says "0x000902F5" under SLI compat bits DX1x, change that to 0x0C1902F5. Save, play.

Probably should have stated it when I posted the GIF because it does look sped up, however for a realtime even it just looks awful.

I'm guessing optimization issue, maybe SLI related. I don't get any notable drops from firing weapons on my 7970.

I'm quite happy with my performance, mostly 60fps with some dips into the 50s. Using Sethos' recommended settings but with Alpha to coverage on enhanced, plus I'm playing at 2560x1440.

This is on a gigabyte 670 (factory OC) and a 3570k at 4.2Ghz. Looks awesome. Could do with some AA but MSAA kills my frames. I'm down sampling though so it's not too bad.

I love that PC devs put in graphics settings for console ports... but hate it when they don't actually explain what they do.

What does this postfx setting actually do on very high/ultra that it doesn't do on medium/high?

From what I am hearing it greatly effects fps, I have had it set to ultra and my gtx580 is going nuts... but don't want to lower it and miss out on some awesome effects. Problem is we just don't know what it really does!

Getting ~40 fps simply running around the jungle. Any tips on which settings to lower to get dat 60 fps? It's been a while since I needed to go medium settings in a game... sigh.

i wouldn't be mad if that stormy sky texture didn't just pop in out of fucking nowhere.

I've got a near identical setup, just with a 560 instead of a TI. Would you mind dropping the resolution down to 1366x768 and throwing 2xAA on that and letting me know how it runs? On high settings that is.

I noticed it to. Rain transition is plain bad. It'll be a bright blue sky one sec, and then a dark stormy one the next. Unless Storm from the X-Men is flying around up there, it's pretty bad.

I'm running this game on a system that afaik has no business running it. Settings are low/medium DX9 and I'm getting anywhere between 25 and 50 fps. Playable but not great. Anyone have any ideas on how I could turn off this game's ambient occlusion completely?

I was worried after all the horror stories in this thread, but I have to say it's running extremely well on SLI 680s:

Saw similar frame rates during the initial escape scene, too.

Jeez man. This thread is to assuage the fears of people like me with just a single old 560. Of COURSE it runs great with two 680s :D

My GPU is all over the place with this game. Any ideas why? I tried V-Sync on and off, windowed and fullscreen and it is still the same. The game is also stuttering like crazy.

specs:
2600k @ 4.2ghz
AMD 7950 3gb
8GB RAM

Even with everything on lowest and no dx11, it is still like that.

I have an
I5 3570k @ 3.4Ghz
16Gb DDR3 RAM (Cant remember the hz)

now this is the part I'm worried about
Nvidia GTS 250 1Gb

Will this card be able to handle Far Cry 3 ? I'm in the middle of upgrading but I wondered if you guys knew how much pressure this game puts on the GPU ?
