Wii U hacked?

Well ...

You didn't even need to say "well", just the picture is perfect.

This is pretty fast, no?

That cannot be the key, it's too short. Doesn't the 3DS use 1024-bit RSA keys? Nintendo really shouldn't be using such short keys on the Wii U. It's more likely they found a way to install custom IOS versions into the Wii mode (since there's no failproof way for Nintendo to prevent that).

Well, that's it for third party support.
I would be surprised if the Wii U is less safe than the DSi and the 3DS though.

Still, I doubt this will lead to something substantial. It would be beyond embarrassing to fuck up the Wii U security like they did with the Wii. They learned their lesson after the DS and managed to lock down both the DSi and 3DS, so I would assume they've done the same with the Wii U.

It's worth noting the DS hardly had any OS security, so blocking that with the DSi/3DS is not that incredible. Part of the WiiU OS problem is apparently the legacy stuff it had to share with the Wii due to hardware/software compatibility.

marcan insinuated that its security is possibly just as vulnerable as the wii...

so if true then, hmmmm

Perhaps they're using the newer ECDSA type keys which doesn't have to be as long to be effective. That's the standard for OpenSSH nowadays. I'm not sure if such keys are usually longer than that or not though.

Isn't it because they don't want Japanese consumers to import games from other countries? Because of the strong yen or something like that.

So hackers have a legitimate excuse to hack it.

I would assume to stop people from importing it for cheaper from other regions. Importing things to the US is usually not that much cheaper, and in many cases even more expensive than buying a game locally. But in other countries it might be cheaper to import the US version than buying locally, but then Nintendo won't make as much money on the sale as they would if it was bought for the local price.

are you kidding, do you realize what this means? Firmware updates galore!

Don't get me started. As soon as I bought the thing I spent 2 hours updating it. And then packed it away for Xmas day. Now when I open it. I've got another hour to update it.

That's all I ask for. Not to mention the gamepad's resolution is the same as the Wii's so the games will look perfect on it!
.

Disappointing this isn't how it works already, to be honest. Doubly so if the WiiU ends up hacked immediately anyway.

Yes, that would be funny to have homebrew on Wii U before the 3DS.
Marcan already said that it was as easy as the Wii to hack the Wii U.

Ok Homebrew dudes, now give me Wii mode and Wii-ware games on my gamepad, please!
Hacking the system is one thing, what you want is a completely different issue. Hacked or not, I don't see that happening anytime soon. And if it's going to happen, it'll probably be wonky.

Yeah it might take a Wii emulator, or something. There's probably a reason why Nintendo couldn't get it working on the pad, with their sandboxed Wii setup.

What are the odds I can soon play roms of my old SNES, Genesis or even GC games on a Wii U and have them be streamed onto the tablet controller?

If they can stream emulated games onto the tablet controller, I'll go buy one today itself.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Please, don't release it just yet, I can't afford to buy a second WiiU right now.

I think they just want to control prices in general, plus the 8-bit era had the added incentive of a lot of Japanese games they may not want seen by American players (easily) and that a lot of games weren't so text based as to be unplayable in Japanese. At this point it's probably more the former with the latter shifted to playing it VERY safe with rating controls, which does seem more believable after that Europe time limit insanity.

Cmon people, its just a sha-1 hash, its not a key of anything.
So this doesn't mean Wiiu is hacked at all.
