Thieves steal $2m worth of Wii (Wii U?) consoles

lol, you guys must have some kinda first-post six-sense or something. First post is almost always well played.

Unfortunate if true though, especially if it's Wii U.

Yeah the predictable first posts that get quoted a billion times are a great part of GAF.

Joke's on them. Unless they want to use eBay and sell them for below retail, they'll have a hard time getting rid of them. (Also, to maximize profits they should probably ship them out by just plastering postage on the Wii U box)

lolwut. THEY STOLE THEM. They are going on the black market for VERY cheap. Thieves dont expect fair market retail value.

Looks like they learned absolutely nothing with the 3DS-DS debacle. At least that seems to have sorted itself out, though. This Wii-Wii U nonsense seems like it's on a whole 'nother level.

Megadrive was named Genesis in the States. NoA could have pushed back and tried to call it something else.
Nintendo Kyoto calls the shots.

The commercial for the wiiU might be the worst thing ever. It really looks like an add-on. Just saying new nintendo console isn't enough.

I honestly do not see how people can be this confused. I understand a bit of confusion but for professionals to be this confused is just weird.

What do you want them to do? have the words "all new console" flash on the screen over and over in bright colors?

They basically set themselves up with wiisports, wii music, wii fit etc.

I don't know but when Sony and Microsoft advertise their consoles they manage to do it well while showing that it's actually a system. Sony showed the PS3 itself a lot in their VP of whatever commercials. They even described it and all that. Microsoft manages to show the 360 console a lot and have no problem conveying new hardware.

Nintendo just seems to have a problem with this. And keep in mind Nintendo's fanbase these days is filled with more people that don't follow games at all ever, they'll see something and form a quick judgement. It's all about educating the right way.

I agree that they set themselves up with the way they've chosen to brand and advertise.

Seems pretty obvious that there is confusion with the brands. Does Nintendo really not see it or are they expecting the early adoptors will know the difference already? Regardless, it's not a great place to be in for Nintendo. Wonder if this will make it a little difficult to find now?

Edit: Just re-read it and saw it was 7,000 units. I guess that amount won't be anything significant considering they are fairly easy to come by currently (whether that's because of poor sales or quick restocks).

LOL @ the confusion omg tears "what's it called? I dunno I think its the new Wii ds? yeah I think its a 3d tablet for Wii!"

Games journalism.

Take into account it's just a minor ABCnews blog. It's not like it's featured on their homepage (or is it?). Anyway, can you blame them? Partially I guess, but the majority of the blame should be on Ninty with this naming scheme. Every one of us (gamers, not people working for Nintendo) saw this coming a year and a half ago but they never changed it. Just a really strange move, or lack thereof. If I had to guess I'd say there was some Japanese pride at work at NOJ that didn't want to change it due to stubbornness, just a guess.

PlayStation 3
Xbox 360
Wii... U?

Common man, it's just a dumb name. Not like Sony and MS even have to tell anyone it's a new console with names like those. I liked N64 and GC names myself, people didn't get confused with those did they?

I don't get it, are you agreeing with me? It sounds like you're disagreeing with me but I'm basically saying wii u is a dumb name as well.

This

I wonder what it will take for people to realize this. Do Miyamoto and Iwata have to come down and pimp slap Reggie for everyone to notice. The guy is a virtual puppet for them.

They are obsessed with controllers.

Wait, Wii U comes with a console?
I was hoping to get a Wii U for my kid's Wii. Are you saying it comes with an extra Wii? My kid already has one. Guess ill take the new Wii out and give it to my niece for Christmas.

I know you're joking and all, but...

Nintendo is my favorite video game company. But the way they played this name was dumb on so many levels.

They wanted to capitalize on the Wii brand but instead shot themselves in the foot by adding a U to the end, making it sound like something you buy for your Wii. And they continue to ignore that most core gamers attach a negative connotation to Wii. Or they thought some empty promises could convince everyone that this gen will be different.

I'm surprised they were able to load all those Wii Us without getting caught, given how slow the Wii U load times are.

Wow, I actually heard this story on the radio a couple hours ago!

It's the first time I've ever heard someone say "Wii U" on the radio lolllololo

I'm surprised they were able to load all those Wii Us without getting caught, given how slow the Wii U load times are.

slow...clap...

I say count them as sold since the wii u consoles still work and will be used by someone unless it was stolen with the sole purpose to make sure it doesn't get played. Hmm where was Hirai the night this crime took place?

lol you are making no sense. Given the current sales the thieves should have gone for either the xbox or the ps3. Don't think it was that smart of them to go for the wiiu, unless they plan on selling them spread out over a long time. Then I can see why they would prefer wiiu because it has a lesser chance of a price cut
They should have gone for 360 but who am I to question the minds of lowly thieves? apparently they thought stealing wii u's was a good idea and done so. they must have some sort of plan with them. they wudnt have gone through so much trouble if they didnt have an idea of what to do with stolen wii u's,

Give this man pizza and a cookie, we have a winner.
