Nintendo recommends opening Wii U and perform system update before gifting to others

You're right in that many other video game consoles and other Internet-enabled electronic devices may require a firmware update. However, the issue at hand here isn't merely that the system needs a firmware update. It's the fact that the Wii U requires such a large and time-consuming firmware update.

If the Wii U could be easily updated in 15 minutes or less (like other systems), then this wouldn't be a problem for most people.

Some people mentioned that the Wii U units that are out in the wild now were manufactured several months ago, long before the current firmware was available.

What Nintendo should have done over the last few weeks (after the magnitude of this problem was realized) was create discs with the firmware update on them (and possibly some game demos, too), and distribute them to retailers who are selling the systems. The retailers could then give out a disc with every Wii U system that was sold. By doing this, new Wii U owners could quickly and easily update their system's firmware without waiting for a lengthy Internet download process--or even without having to connect to the Internet.

Exactly. Or store the firmware on the game discs themselves.

LOL at suggesting opening up a child's christmas gift. Especially the black model which will have fingerprints and dust all over it.

meh at this point most people troll Nintendo just because it's Nintendo. I updated the wii u I bought my kids this morning. Took all of 30 minutes and that was with the update setting up my Nintendo network account, transferring the mii's from my 3ds etc,.

The OTA update is a delta update and has been this way for quite a while, that was one the the nice points about cutting the cord with iTunes.
Makes sense. Well, I still use an old first generation iPhone, so no updates for me - OTA or otherwise.

Still begs the question: If the 2.0 Wii U firmware was 1.1GB and the 2.1 update is 600MB, is Nintendo using deltas as well or did they manage to make the firmware itself smaller by using more or better compression or something?

lol. How a company could come up with such an awful OS in 2012 is beyond me.

They should have a unified structure that shows updates for games you own somehow. Every time I pop a new game in there's a stupid, long update. It's unbelievable.

Nintendo is too cheap to implement optical out or license Dolby Digital or DTS. Which not only causes issues with surround sound headsets + receivers w/o HDMI-in (as in customers won't get surround sound in those cases, if sound at all, because the smart people at Nintendo also disabled dual-video/audio-out), but also makes video-on-demand services on Wii U output stereo only. They even disabled Pro Logic II sound output for (most?) Wii games, because otherwise they would have to pay a few cents to Dolby and they want to get into profit zone within 1-2 games sold.

Free discs with an update? That would cost Nintendo a few cents per customer. Way too much. They should rather send out a tweet telling customers to preinstall an ultra large update. That's much cheaper.

Maybe they should sell those discs, yeah that should work. We don't want Nintendo to not be in profit zone as fast as possible, won't we.

You can play the game while it updates in the background. Seriously, Wii U's updates are on par with PS3. It's not good, but it's not as bad as everyone is saying.

At this point it should have been as good as steam. And if I, a high tech PC user / gamer didn't know that, do you think a normal consumer is going to?

I feel like a customer that wanted a Wii U day-1 but Nintendo was so cheap, that I would have to buy a new expensive receiver to get surround sound or pay 150$ for a HDMI audio decoder, because they couldn't be bothered to at least license Dolby Digital.

In retrospect I'm kind of glad though, because if I bought it, I would have gotten fed up by all those other issues. Like constant lockups and ultra-large updates. I would have never expected those things from a Nintendo console.

Hey, if they don't give a shit, why should I? I was just a loyal customer.

So you are bitching on a gaming forum about a product you don't own or don't plan to own? Good job Bob! *thumbs up

Now where's that NFL discussion topic, I have to go tell them how much I hate American football when soccer is so much cooler. That'll show 'em!

I'm bitching about a product that I wanted to own. And I normally never buy consoles day 1. You know, I even waited with my Batman Arkham City purchase because of Wii U. And then all this crap. I seriously can't believe it.

I'm just seriously disappointed in Nintendo.

btw. my name is not Bob.

Oh and I will buy a Wii U some day, when it got to 200$ pricepoint at most. That's what I'm going to do for basically one game (Pikmin 3).

btw2: I really loved Nintendo consoles till this one. I even love the idea of the Wii U. But the execution is really flawed. I own a large collection of Nintendo video games. Don't tell me that I would hate on Nintendo because it's Nintendo. But before this Nintendo meant quality. Not anymore.

I really like the Wii U, but not having optical out and Dolby Digital really does suck for those of us who don't have a HDMI receiver.

It also suck that you can't even use the component cables at the same time as a HDMI cable. Hopefully they will at least add that with a firmware update.

Don't worry Bob, get something else with the money you had saved for Wii U. How about Xbox 360 and some games? It is cheapish and its gaming library is huuuuuge nowadays, and works with ancient receivers too.

Uh, just because a receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs doesn't make it ancient.

Also, surround headphones need an optical cable to work.

I will never buy Microsoft consoles, ever. In the Microsoft case your analogy would actually work. But this thread is not about Microsoft consoles, isn't it.

Look, I didn't care about Nintendo releasing Wii - a Non-HD console. That many people openly hated, because casual and Non-HD. I didn't care. Because there were great games and it was not a patch marathon. Some patches here and there - fine. But extremly huge patches and still plenty of lockups? That's not acceptable for me as a consumer.

I also bitched about what Sony did when releasing PS3. And my impression was that Nintendo would do it way better. Sadly, I was wrong. Like I said - I expected Nintendo to do better.

But it says that you can start the game anyway when you're downloading an update. It's very clear, so I don't know how you could miss it.

What problems have you had with your Wii U then Bob? Or are you just repeating what message board naysayers are shouting?

I got one day-1 and have had one hard-lock since then. One=1. Got the console updated no problem, all 3 games (AC3, NL, ZombiU) that I have work fine. Wi-Fi works fine, surround sound is nice with my almost 2 year old $250 receiver. Visuals are same league as my Xbox 360 Slim offers and the controller is great. My Xbox 360 Slim has been in repair twice; Wi-fi stopped working and second time console couldn't read any discs anymore. But the repair process went well so I have only positive feelings about it. BF3 freezes at least once per 2-4 hour session, but I don't know if it is a software or OS problem.

Wii U OS is slowish, but doesn't bother me that much. If they make it faster sometimes later, good. But I can live with this one too since it is actually clearer and simple overall than current Xbox 360 OS with all the unnecessary non-gaming related extra crap.

What an embarrassing thread, making a mountain out of a fucking canyon

It is kind of baffling that some good advice that can be applied to any kind of tech device, even the next Xbox and PS, can generate so many posts.

I doubt that the NeoGAF thread about Wii U locking up is full of shouting naysayers. And by reading that thread, those issues don't seem to be isolated cases as well. And the bricking by update issues also don't seem to be isolated.

You were lucky. That's great. I guess there are also a few release day 360s out there that still work. But I think noone would deny that there was a large RROD problem, not even Microsoft.

Instead of giving out free upgrade discs or even putting the update on regular game discs, they go with this tweet, because I guess it's the cheapest way of handling it.

Wii U's disc drive speed is 22MB/second. Which means even a 1GB update would install within a MINUTE.

BF3 freezes at least once per 2-4 hour session, but I don't know if it is a software or OS problem.

It's fine that you accept all this. I wouldn't. I recently played Fallout New Vegas. If every game on PS3 behaved that way, I would get rid of my PS3.

I really couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how long Wii U OS took to change languages.

A normal consumer won't care about the update. I didn't, I had breakfast at the time.

People are used to minor inconveniences with electronics.

What?

Are you implying that if I buy someone television for christmas I should update its firmware before I wrap it?

Also, how can it be applied to the next ms/sony consoles when you surely cannot know their details?

9 pages......9 PAGES for a consumer tip from Nintendo about their product. 9.

NeoGAF should be ashamed. Seriously.

If i got an opened wii u for christmas, id still be pretty psyched.

Me too. Kids honestly don't care if there are smudges or dust on their Wii U ffs, nor do they care if the box has been opened so Santa can install the update. Having to wait for an hour or two to play your new toy would be much more disappointing. I'm not excusing Nintendo for requiring such a large update, but this is the best they can do until it's pre-installed on new units.

You can use the television before updating, just like you can use Wii U without updating if you want.

And you definitely should update your TV software to its latest version!

Aren't iOS updates often over half a GB? Surely not every device bought comes with those for sometime after its launch...

iOS devices work out of the box, updates are also downloaded in the background. Updates are pretty much optional unless you just bought an iOS device right after they announced the next iOS version and before the new current models

And as someone said earlier, 6.0.2 didn't take that long to download. The important updates are usually in October when they announce the big iOS revisions. New iOS devices come with the newest iOS revisions pretty quickly on store shelves as the older models get phased out

Anybody gifting anything electronic should do that. I will give a Kobo Glo to my father and loaded it with books and everything.
Hell, do you really want to give a Ps3 and let the guy download 3 hours of updates? Hell, I would even put the games in and install the games for him for the Ps3.

It seems like the OS wasn't done before the systems were sent out so that wouldn't have worked and they aren't going to ship out millions of flash drives just to handle one update that people can do on their own.

The OS wasn't done but it could accept updates. Whether or not the update data is loaded from USB or ethernet, or Wifi shouldn't matter.

If Nintendo values the launch experience ease of use AND they wanted to RTM before the software was done then they would have to do something like that. Clearly they do not. I mean the COGS of an 8 GB USB flash is like $1.50.
