Help me out here GAF; name me 2-3 books on Amazon.com that total at $16 to get. There are comics on Amazon that I want but I need $16 more to avail for the free shipping/no tax thing.
Just name your fav. book or a book you feel is under-rated and I'll consider adding it thanks.
...but remember the books must total together at around $16.

Oh and as for this week:

Wonder Woman 15 was good

Avengers #2 wasn't as good s the first but the recruitment drive was OK...except for Carol and Jessica which I felt was unneeded.

Saga #8 was brilliant

Umbrella Academy vol 1 and 2 :)

Has anyone read the latest Fairest issues? Verdict?
How about Venom Savage Six trade, Remender's last issues on the title?

I need to find a trade to add to my order too, though it will be hard to ask for recommendations since i read a lot to begin with....

order so far:

Judge Dredd Bolland
IZombie vol 3 and 4
- was going to be Fairest vol 1 but i don't want to start a new ongoing atm.

Journey into Mystery Manchester Gods TPB seems like a rip-off. Three issues of Jim and the poorly reviewed Mighty Thor Annual. These low issue Marvel trades drive me nuts, not buying.

One of those books should be the first Manhattan Projects trade. It's Hickman doing crazy alternate reality historical science fiction and is super fun.

Picked up DeConnick's Avengers Assemble and have added it to my pull list. I drop all Bendis books and then pick up DeConnick. The universe seems stable again.

started my Bendis Avengers run after Siege hardcovers.....

...it's Bendis alright. Avengers eating pizza while everyone talks like spider-man.

Filthy Slug

Crowd screaming like hounds at the heat of the chase/ All the colors of the rainbow flood my face
I thought the first trade was quite good, but to be fair my wife and I really dig Fables. There's a different focus, but it's mostly more of the same.

Oh, shit, reading this reminded me of something I wanted to ask in here: Has anybody been keeping up with Fables? I stopped at ~102 because the series was just flatlining for me, but I wanted to know if any of the arcs past 102 are worth looking into?

It's about as good as the issues you've read, though i especially liked the latest Cubs in Toyland arc involving Bigby's kids. Highlight for me was still the March of the Wooden Soldiers trade, just doesn't have the same feeling as it used to now.

Just read spoilers for ASM #700. Dan Slott, you're an asshole. I just got back into ASM, Spider-Island and forward, and this is where he takes the story?! I'd rather read another 100 issues of JMS' mystical-animal-totem The Other nonsense!

Guess I'll ignore Spider-man until Marvel retcons this horse shit.

See, what I'm thinking is
Peter will get back his body somehow, as Octavius is already confused about it...
See Avenging Spider-Man 15.1.

I think i would like to read more of the other too. His power set was awesome...despite the other shit

Spoil it for me man. I don't read the Avenging series.

Well
Octavius was thinking about something, and he's like "I remember when I - no, he - made this." Also, a storekeeper is yelling "Stop, thief!" as a criminal runs away, and Octavius is like "Petty crime, that's not-" (or something like that - I'm paraphrasing) and armbars the dude. He's stunned for a moment and thinks "I guess that was instinct."

Things like that, plus the fact that Slott said we wouldn't know who Superior was until Superior Spider-Man #1. So maybe, maybe not.

Wow, you're gonna have to pay a hefty fee to ship those...
Don't you have a kinokuniya or Borders near you?

There is one some 15 min drive away I think I'll pass by this weekend and ask if they can order it for me via amazon.com. Cheers mate.
What's kinokuniya though?

A bookstore chain. The one in Dubai probably has the biggest collection of comics out of any store in the region. I know there's one in Dubai so I thought maybe there's one near you, turns out there isn't.
Still, if you ever visit Dubai it's worth visiting that place.

Borders is still a thing? I thought they all closed.

Some are still open over here, and considering our only other option for buying physical comics is online and having to pay hefty fees we're willing to buy from them.

Woah just looked it up and am searching it to see if they have any of the books i'm interested in. Thanks for the info!

Last year I asked them to get me a book but they never got it for me, but hopefully this time they'll actually deliver lol.

The lady got me Wolverine: enemy of the state, old man Logan, and Superman: Last Son for Christmas. Pretty excited to dig into then after finishing American Vampire vol 3.

Got JLA Vol 1 and How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way for Christmas. ^_^

What would you guys recommend from the Superman sale on comixology? I got Secret Origin, Annual 11, and Kingdom Come in my cart, and I've already read Birthright, Seasons, All-Star, Red Son, John's Brainiac story and Trinity.

Greg Rucka's run on Superman is good, so check it out, it seems there's only a few issues of his run up on sale atm.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
I occasionally scan through Amazon recommendations for upcoming books of interest (cuz they're always littered with pre-orders, before solicitations are even issued), and tonight I spotted Catwoman Vol 2: No Easy Way Down, the continued reissuing of Ed Brubaker's run. I'm pleased to see DC didn't quit after the first volume. I was worried after so much time was going by and no sign of it; this'll be about an 18 month gap between the two collections.

Also of interest for people, DC's doing a hardcover omnibus of Grant Morrison's Animal Man run next year.

Ah word, sounds like the melding of memories is kicking in.

Actually to me it read more like
Peter's memories and instincts are overriding Otto's to a certain degree, either because it's Peter's body or because Peter has the stronger will. I don't think they are merging so much as Otto is being shunted to the side during certain situations if he doesn't actively maintain control.
Also interesting from Avenging is
Otto's complete confidence that he was better than Peter in every way, that is until he goes up against his old security system that he believed to be invincible.

If 700 turned me off to a certain degree, then I have to say Avenging made me curious as to how this will all play out. Marvel should have done a double pack or something, buy ASM 700 and get the Avenging issue packed in.

? Okay, I'm a bit confused. So there's another Spidey comic? How does Avenging tie up with Superior?

i think you're right but it seems like they're gonna stretch this out for a few years. Ive been thinking about this more and in a way Spidey won.not only did he not break his stupid no one dies rule,he effectively defeated otto as well by turning him into a good guy.thats a victory in a way.it will be so satisfying when Otto admits Peter was the better man and relinquishes control to him again. My main gripe is people like MJ not knowing - it's a real kick in the nuts to die this way and to not have any sort of funeral or send off.poor Pete :(

So I was rereading Kingdom Come yesterday and I was reminded of how much I love KC Superman's costume. It's really just the classic costume with a modified shield, but damn if it isn't fantastic. So that got me thinking about my favorite Superman variant costumes. I'd say this is my Top 5:

Justice_Society_of_America_v3_10_art.jpg

Kingdom Come Variant
Again, it's really just the modified shield, but it really brings out the melancholy of the character. This Superman has seen some shit and you can tell straight away. The diagonal strip is also just a stroke of design genius.

original.jpg

Nu-Earth 2 Variant
This one's a lot newer, and the tragedy of it is that we'll likely never see this costume used on an extended basis. Which is a shame, because I love it. It keeps the classic elements, but still makes it look a bit more modern. I really wish that they'd used this costume for the regular New 52 Superman.

tumblr_ll35yiyg4Z1qzvnpdo1_500.jpg

Superman Beyond Variant
This one actually comes from the Batman Beyond animated series, but it's made its way into comics thanks to the latest BB comic series. It obviously takes a few design cues from the Kingdom Come costume, but the silver-on-black gives it a totally different feel. It's sleek and modern, but it still feels like Superman. That's a difficult thing to pull off.

fxFZ1l.jpg

Superman Prime Variant
No, not THAT Prime - this is from Grant Morrison's DC One Million story. It's the original Superman that's been hanging out in the Sun until the 853rd Century, and when he emerges, it's a "holy shit" moment. The dude's a golden god and I love the look.

Superman_in_Red_Son.png

Red Son Variant
I'm actually not a huge fan of the story, but the muted color palette and the hammer-and-sickle shield make for a pretty cool design.

LiQuid!

I proudly and openly admit to wishing death upon the mothers of people I don't like
I like the Superobamaman variant because the negative space in the shield looks like a pair of dicks. One with a real fat head and one with a skinny head but with a little exposed balls.

Christmas kept me pretty busy the last week so, so I finally caught up with...

SAGA #8 - The opening page of the issue being the last page of a romance novel was quite brilliant. Alana's favorite novel wasn't quite the novel I thought it was. "Holy. Fucking. Shit."

HELLBOY IN HELL #1 - Great to see Mignola back in the saddle, art-wise, though something still feels a bit off compared to his work on, say, The Conqueror Worm on back. Not sure how much of it is lack of practice and how much of it is purely a stylistic shift. Art was A+ though - just different is all. This arc has so much potential, and I have no doubt it'll impress.

That's it for now. I ordered all the back issues of Planetoid and hope to receive them shortly, so I'll post my meager impressions as I go.

Just Justice League and Aquaman for me this week. The Throne of Atlantis crossover got off to a good start and seems like it should be a good story. Both issues had more of Johns continued elevation of Arthur and Mera, and a bit of super dickery at the end of Aquaman from the rest of the League. The Shazam back up in JL was solid as always.
