What are Nintendo's teams working on now

The days of E3 being jam-packed with game reveals are over by this point. Nintendo Directs are more controlled environments for revealing games, they hit a huge number of people, and they're not competing for attention in the same way they would be at E3. I'm sure we'll still get a few reveals at E3, but I expect Nintendo to treat it mostly as a way of getting playable demos into the hands of the press.

As such, we'll probably get a couple of reveals in a Nintendo Direct soon enough (possibly even the 8th). Monolith's Wii U project seems a reasonable possibility, as Iwata already mentioned it in a ND, and I'd expect it to come out in 2013 in Japan. A mainline Pokemon announcement is also very likely if it is being released in 2013. Whatever Good Feel and Monster are working on also seem decent bets. We won't get a blowout, though, just a couple of announcements every few months as Nintendo Directs roll by.

Speaking of Monolith, I never noticed they were hiring for a network programmer before. Some online elements in the next game maybe?

I seem to remember someone from Monolith talking about their next game "connecting people" or something like that. I'd expect some sort of Miiverse/Dark Souls style asynchronous connection rather than a fully-fledged online RPG, but you never know.

I love and hate these kind of threads, but perhaps it's because I'm very easily hyped. Ideally we would get a new Advance Wars, a 3D Mario, portable Zelda , Diddy Kong Racing, and if I really start going over the top, a new Chibi-robo from Skip and a new Battalion Wars etc.

In reality we'll get Wii Fit and Wii Sports U. Oh and if there is a new AW it will be shite like Days of Ruin.

It sounds like EAD Tokyo doesn't want to do a third Galaxy title based on director Koichi Hayashida thoughts:
I always thought they could have done a third Galaxy game if they took all the ideas from 1 and 2 and then made a game that "breaks" them. Like using Wario or something to sort of cheat his way through levels with ladders and jet packs and stuff.

Oh we'll. I look forward to what's next. I'll almost surely buy a Wii U when the time comes for that.

You could consider Nintendo Land a push for F-Zero so it would be logical to follow through with the fully fledged retail title. Unless they're saving Kirby, Starfox etc for DLC, I think it's interesting they felt there was value in choosing F-Zero as the racer in the collection.

But it's best not to get too carried away with that kind of logic when sales and profit almost always have the final say.

Sorry I'm late to reply on this F-Zero topic but I just wanted to say one more thing. The fact that they named the F-Zero based attraction in NintendoLand after Captain Falcon says a lot in terms of the value they think the franchise 'F-Zero' has with people. The words ' F-Zero' are nowhere to be found and that makes me feel like they don't think it holds much water or is worth carrying on with.

I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about Rayman Legends Wii U.
My expectations:

1. Solid Nintendo Directs before E3 covering upcoming titles in the spring and summer months. This could be anything from Wii Sports U to DKR to Bayo 2.

2. E3 comes with Retro's title, a 3D Mario, 3DS Zelda, and maybe some 2D platformer like Kirby or Yoshi. All are considered 2013 titles (but some will not make it). VC Wii U will also arrive with GamePad support for GCN and maybe Dreamcast games (please). Wind Waker or Mario Sunshine will demonstrate this. If Wii Sports U doesn't come out in the summer, that too will arrive at E3.

3. Nintendo Direct a month or 2 following E3 highlighting a couple more games including Monolith's title or DQX or something with no date attached.

4. More Directs pointing at e-shop titles, VC titles and further localizations of 3DS titles.

5. Another holiday season where we complain that nothing is coming out and Nintendo needs to announce new games quick!

All in all, a solid year for Nintendo with serious competition building up. I expect a price drop only if the summer fails with whatever they come out with. Then an October price drop would make sense, down $50.

Well, my expectation leaves options open. For instance, I don't expect Bayo, DKR, and Wii Sports U to arrive this summer, but only 1. Second, I fully expect Mario and Retro's title for Wii U at E3, but also something in the 'Wii' line, so Sports sounds appropriate (unless they want to launch it in the summer, which would make sense). VC has also been talked about and so has Zelda 3DS, but that might not be ready.

Considering E3 2006 had Zelda, Mario, Metroid, and all Wii launch titles + solid DS games, I don't consider this outlandish, especially since Nintendo is in a much better place than they were in 2006. That said, I expect a slow leak of news and not the extravaganza they unleashed in 2006. However, the content will be there.

Yeah I could see something simple along those lines happening.

I'm expecting EADT, Retro, Wii Sports U and 3DS Zelda in the second half of next year. Any other big game would be icing on the cake.
Yeah, I think the point of this thread is to show that first party alone has a lot up its sleeve, so people fretting about Nintendo's "empty" line-up are woefully short-sighted.

By my count, there's a possibility we may get 20 amazing first party announcements revealed and released by Christmas 2013, but nobody's predicting that.

But Nintendo appears to be in the enviable position of being able to hold off on whatever releases they like to suit their business model, and plan a schedule that maximises sales.

That said, I still think we're going to see a heck of a lot of announcements throughout the year, even for distant hypeful titles like Smash 4. Whether they explode at E3 or just before or after is moot I think.

His predictions are not really that unreasonable. If Nintendo can't deliver on even those vague and moderate goals, they're in serious trouble.

First half of the year:

Nothing. Yeah, the big software drought.

That period was definitely a big drought but you could at least mention games like Mario Sports Mix and Wii Play: Motion.

Edit: 2010 is missing Wii Party, too.

Let's face it, unless Nintendo put all their resources into 3DS game development, most of their studios should have had at least 18 months to work on Wii U titles by now (seeing how this year was pretty barren for Wii releases).

I found some interesting info about an old Nintendo company; Saru Brunei.

Apparently they worked on Jungle Park for the PS1 and Saturn before making Cubivore.

I found info about Gento Matsumoto, the head of the company (when it still existed), anyone care to go onto it and translate anything useful? It'd be nice to know what he's been up to and if he has any interest in going back to game development.

http://public-image.org/interview/2008/06/10/gento-matsumoto.html

He was said to be Miyamoto's right-hand man for 15 years. And also note the fucking freaky Cubivore pic in the page...

Cubivore is one 3DS port I would happily pay $40 for. No lie.

Damn straight!

IntSys did the GC port. Doshin also got ported, that was created by Param which was headed by former Artdink folks (one of which is now at Grasshopper).

One dead game from the Marigul era is Echo Delta by Clever Trick, there's a cartridge in the wild that was supposedly 90% completed. Hopefully Nintendo has at least a rom of it themselves to reverse-engineer for a hopeful 3DS port as well. :(

The other two Marigul folks, Ambrella and Noise, are still kicking. Though Noise has been quite for a while.

Do you know the even MORE unfortunate part? Not only is Echo Delta 90% completed, but it's actually been dumped digitally and playable on emulators.

But the person who dumped it isn't sharing it with anyone, so the game is STILL lost even though it should be available.

I know, what a jerk. :/

Yeah, I wonder what Noise is up to? Weird that Wii never got a Custom Robo game. Maybe they'll do V3 on 3DS?

That's what I'm hoping for at least. Last I remember was that on their blog, they said that they know there's demand for a new one. That was like a year ago and I'm having trouble finding the blog.

I want to see Ambrella make a new IP.

One other Marigul game that NEEDS to be revived on the 3DS is Catroots, looks wacky as hell:

http://www.unseen64.net/2008/04/04/catroots-n64-proto-tech-demo/

No clue who made it, Marigul was more of a holding company or a dev umbrella and not a dev themselves. The article mistakes Marigul of being Noise themselves, but I can see how Noise could've been behind it, it has a vague Custom Robo 64-look to the style.

Get on it Noise, you know you want to.

Edit: If someone actually posts here again, here's the blog at Noise mentioning Custom Robo:

http://www.noise-games.com/blog/

Anyone willing to fully translate that first post?

Twitter user says Mallo, Dillon, K.K. slider, Spitz (Warioware), and Mona (WarioWare) in Diddy Kong Racing U.

(Remember good chance this could all be complete bullshit but what the hell, it's worth speculating)

Edit: Picture posted on Reddit earlier this morning:

http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/15rqyi/diddy_kong_racing_wii_u_roster_revealed_on_gaming/

It would be kind of awesome if those rumors from mid-2012 that Nintendo was trying to reaquire some of the RARE IP were actually true. If DKRU is in development, its a classic "where there's smoke, there's fire."

That being said, I think it's bullshit.

But it's worth saying there would probably be a big market for an "Adventure Kart Racer" and the original DKR was no sales slouch. And it's been long enough now to capitalize on the nostalgia crowd.

I would welcome a new DKR with open arms. The original was the very first Nintendo 64 game I ever owned, and I played it to death for months...now that I recall, it was probably the deepest racer I've ever played (although I don't play many).

I hope they haven't forgotten about the Battalion Wars IP. CO-OP would be awesome. One person could command troops with the gamepad while the other could take control of single units with the Wiimote/Nunchuck. Put those Metroid Blast controls to use.

Oh man, the possibilities with Batallion Wars and GamePad are endless. Especially now that we have a better online infrastructure in place.

Did the Batallion Wars for Wii even sell that well?

Does this guy have any credibility?

And besides... Meowth and Squirtle? And why is Mona and a girl from Mother/Earthbound in? THEY'RE HUMAN!!!

BS. Doesn't mean the game isn't happening, but this bit has to be BS.

That said, as much as Squirtle and Meowth being in DKR is out of place, I'D LOVE IT! Squirtle's a fucking BOSS.

But take out the humans and put in perhaps Russell from Dillion, and I'm sure there's another animal character I can think of. Tom Nook maybe?

No way that roster is real.

I...I mean, come on! Rick the Hamster and Kumatora in a Diddy Kong Racing sequel?

Even if it didn't, Nintendo is the perfect company to ressurect an IP if they find a great concept. The WAR series and the GamePad seem to perfectly matched to not see something in the future!

The roster is probably BS, but I want Bunston in if the game is real.

He works so well; adorable and from a small Nintendo IP (Starfy).

I guess I can live with Mona and what's her name, worse things can happen of course.

And how about getting Tricky from SFA in as a boss? He was meant to be the Tricky from DKR, but became his own character, I've always wanted Dinosaur Planet and DK to be connected being as DP is the only actual Rare IP Nintendo owns. Just have a cartoony version in DK and the proper version as it's actual series.

Hell get a cartoony Sharpclaw as a character.

It's weird because Starfy's already a relatively small-time character, why go even further with Bunston? At first I thought it was the Tomato Adventure Rabbit.

I'm not overly enthusiastic to see a DKR sequel. That unrealistic character roster would help though. The more weird the better.

You wouldn't even need existing characters. The original DKR had Banjo and Conker, but the rest were just a random collection of typical RARE character designs.

If its really being developed, let the designers fly their freak flags and put together a roster of insane new characters.

Although a half-in-the-bag Conker would be awesome.

I don't understand why people think there's some type of science to Diddy Kong Racing 1's roster. Rare threw in a bunch of random animals and called it a day.

Itagaki is a big Battalion Wars fan. Maybe Nintendo can get Valhalla Games to make it if they can't find a publisher for Devil's Third. Now that I think about it, I wonder if Nintendo would pick up Devil's third like how they picked up Bayonetta 2?

Good to hear.

It's weird because Batallion Wars was one of the first Nintendo franchises I thought of when I saw the GamePad. I feel like it would fit like a glove.

What is Kuju Entertainment up to these days? Didn't they make the Wii version?
