It has a very weak beginning especially with how they keep switching character perspectives at the start, but it becomes a lot better at around episode four or five though.
Additional wiki reading is probably needed if you want to understand everything otherwise, it is a really fun ride.

Bit the bullet and signed up for Hulu Plus to finish Ah! My Goddess. Commercials aren't bothering me nearly as much as I thought they would, mainly cause I like to browse GAF even while watching anyway. And they were over midway through typing this post.
I don't like Taiga at all, and it's not just because she has no boobs. I'd hate her even if she had tits the size of her head. I like the other characters though, so I hope Taiga gets better.
Maybe it's because I used to be such a space fanboy, but I feel like the movie captures a lot of what I want the show to capture. Yeah, there are so many changes and the ending is basically a "we need to end this movie even though the manga will probably take 20 years to get to this conclusion" type of ending, but I feel like the moments where they try to be earnest works fairly well.
I guess to avoid series spoilers, I'll just talk about generalities, but it has such a great opening intro sequence:
If you are a NASA history dork, it's like someone made an AMV with space footage, but added some production values and graphics to make it look really slick. Funny enough, it reminded me of the early CoD tech porn montages (or maybe the CoD:WaW montages) but used to much better effect.
Probably the biggest worry I had was that this would be cheap, because it's a Japanese movie. I don't think this is too much of a spoiler:
So at least they film on location. Thank god. And speaking of which, the English is actually passable. It's what I wish they did for the anime... but if the anime is for children, then I suppose forcing children to read subtitles for large sections of the anime is a non-starter. Still, I'm glad it's not a bunch of Japanese people pretending to be white people while speaking Japanese and trying to get us to believe that it's English. Everyone is race and language appropriate - thank god.
The space porn is good. I'm sure if this was some big budget 200 million dollar movie, it'd look better (I guess there's a moon landing sequence in one of the Transformers films?), but I thought it looked great.

I also like that they basically expect the Japanese audience to know who he is. Either you recognize him as one of the most famous human beings in the 20th century or you don't. And if you don't, you probably wouldn't be watching a movie called Space Brothers anyway.

No idea if it's any good, but I can appreciate an author putting so much work into creating a world that they got so much material out of it and such a reference is needed.
(But I hope the quality merits it, so it's not a waste of people's time, ha)

It was okay, actors were chosen well, but the mood was all wrong. It went from lighthearted comedy/drama to wannabe serious/dark drama. That and it was boring as hell.

Well one of the main problems was that they faithfully adapted the first chapters which was written with switched character perspective hence why it made no sense. They could have easily went with a method that actually explained stuff but instead choose to just follow the novels. It still works out in the end.

I've posted this before, but the song Sadness M-26, has constantly been in my playlist since viewing Gunbuster. To me, it's a perfect cinematic track that encompasses the feeling of death and sacrifice. I love me some downer music <3

Well I'm guessing at the time they made it the possibility of a 3rd season was fuck all, how were they to know that Shogakukan were going to throw more money down the drain for a 3rd season.
