I don't mind their depiction, because if anything it screams to me that they have a lot to learn, and that we should expect them at some point to be humbled. Maybe I'm just being optimistic though. It depends upon where 343 takes the story and their whole man/machine theme.

Honestly it seems like their general terribleness is kind of the point, like they're exaggeratedly bad to show just how great the Spartan IIs and IIIs really were.

Yep, sometimes annoyance or hatred for characters is kindof the point ;P

Its one of the reasons I like the actress in Breaking Bad, because I can't fucking stand her character most of the time. That's a much better reaction than disinterest, and serves to prep me for the shenanigans ahead.

They were the wrong direction for the series to date, they are completely out of place within the series. Even the Spartan III's were verging on being a step too far, but this takes the absolute piss.

I'd concur the assertion that in prior games you played maps, whereas now you play on them.

This is how I feel when I try to Forge in Halo 4. It feels like I'm making backdrops for 343's game to be played on. People aren't playing my map, they just happen to be on it.

Aren't Spartan IV's supposed to be some of the best soldiers even before they became Spartans? Wouldn't make much sense for them to be the morons which they are right now.

On a different note: Why do people create maps on Erosion? Haven't seen a single map on it that didn't look like shit.

They're best of whatever was left after the war maybe. I imagine there aren't very many soldiers in general left.

Spartan III's seemed to exist logically, both to highlight of the toll of the war on humanity and to further the ethical discussions about the program itself.

Spartan IV's seem like they're just going to replace all regular soldiers, so it doesn't matter if they're not uber disciplined, they're just gonna keep cranking them out anyway, which was the original goal of the S-III program, to distill the Spartan making process down to something affordable. There's no discussion to be had about them really, they're just a copy of a copy.

Yeah but let's take a step backward and talk about them as a design choice from 343i themselves. The purpose of Spartan IV's was to give the player a non chief multiplayer character that fit into the universe, but also handled like Spartan II's. I see the big mistake here, and that was one of the first things 343i set out to do, the unision of multiplayer and single player canon, abandoning treating the multiplayer as am enigmatic, separate universe.

And what an absolutely colossal fucking mistake it was, it is one that will now haunt the series for a long time to come.

Well, at this point you might as well resize them since there's only going to be 720p worth of information unless they add campaign theater w/ superrendering. I can only capture 1080i, not p, so it's gonna look bad and the 360 is just scaling the 720p to make the image anyway.

edit: like so

That does make sense. I always forget that consoles don't even output at my monitor's resolution.

Man it is really a chore to read The Thursday War.. so boring, no interesting tidbits for now

I want Fred, Kelly and Linda damn.

what the fuck.

some guy on reddit said his company designed most of the armor in halo 4 multiplayer, and his company is in the credits of the game.

I work and a Video Game Art outsourcing company called Liquid Development. 343i contracted us out to do most of multiplayer armors in Halo 4, and some campaign stuff too.

edit:
he did say later on,

No, 343i designed the suits and sent us the "blueprints". There was a lot of small details that 3d artist got to create, but the base design was all 343.

edit: spelling

So they did the 3D models I guess?

Eh, not the worst. Of everything to complain about the modelling is at the bottom of the list. It's not like the 3D modellers would have spent their time fixing game balance or fileshares.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed Thursday War much more than Glasslands. I'm actually looking forward to the next one.

It'll be a way before I start the Bear novels though.

But the lack of a custom server browser is just a tiny blip, right?

The binary rifle is hilarious. That shit is like a spartan laser that you don't have to charge.

I used it to clean up some kills while playing Regicide. I wasn't quite sure how powerful the weapon was until I saw some n00b picking off a few people. So I killed him before he could get me and decided to try it out.

"I wonder how powerful this weapon is"
*zooms in, shoots at opponent's chest, he dies instantly*
"LOL"

Maybe it gets better, but yes Glasslands was also a struggle.

I would really love to know how Nylund would have approached these stories.

It's only interesting contribution to the sandbox is for Team Regicide, for killing the king. (Would be better if it weren't randomly spawned of course)

Outsourcing things like this is common in game development. IIRC even Reach's armour modeling was done by outside artists.

Yup, contracting is everywhere.
It's how I made my dollas before

As a sidenote, Marty was talking on a podcast or an interview a while back (can't remember which) where he was saying that video game development will eventually become like movies where it's openly set up where a central company makes the designs and then all the work is outsourced to other companies. So you make the game levels, then you buy music off one studio, your fx work off another, your VA done outside by another company, etc

When did they start development on H4? They only moved into Bungie's old dump last year right? Maybe they had to meet a deadline and outsourced whatever they could to meet it. I wonder if they cut assualt because they didn't have time to fit it in.

Btw, before anyone from 343 decides to tear me a new one... This is just forum chatter. Don't get all angry.

The Spartan IV's are morons because of crappy writing there is no canon related reason. Sorry.

This all assumes that there is no further development in the works for the Spartan IVs, and I think the game and Spartan Ops have dropped hints that will be explored.

Halsey can't stand the Spartan IV program for a few different reasons, and she doesn't consider them to be true Spartans. Remember the line "First we taught them to be quiet, then we taught them to be Spartans"? That's some sound advice for Majestic, wouldn't you say?

Why are the Spartan IIs so different, and why is John special among that group? The guy who doesn't even allow his humanity to come to the surface? That thinks that he's a machine? Did John's success come about because he lacked basic humanity and was at his core, broken? These are the very first questions posed in the game, in the opening cinematic, catalyzed in this first chapter of a new trilogy that we know focuses on the Chief's humanity, by way of Cortana's arc of rampancy, and continued by stressing the difference between the Chief and new breed of Spartans in the end cinematic and Spartan Ops.

Seems clear to me that this is a direction that 343 may follow up on since they've laid a foundation for it. That the Spartan IVs are new blood that haven't yet learned what it is to be a Spartan like the Chief.

I think most of us get that Null, but the point is that it should've never happened. To allow for writing like "Egghead" in a more "sophisticated" Halo is poor design.
