Valve and Xi3 announce Steam-based mini-PC

I'm pretty sure this isn't the Valve "steambox" discussed earlier.

Didnd't read the whole thread so Idk if full specs are know, but they can't be any good : 400 million transistors and 20W power usage, in hardware grunt terms that means it's not for gaming.

Modern intel cpus have a billion transistors, a geforce gtx 680 has about 4 billion transistors. 20W is less than your average laptop parts use.
There's no room for any decent amount of storage in there either (128GB hdd maybe like in the old Ipods? If it's flash then it's going to be hella expensive).

This thing isn't the steambox.

This micro pc thing has been done before as well, but without the condescending hot air blowing 'post pc era' tagline :\

if it works well and is at a good price, it will sell imo

computer build.

mobo - 60
8gig ram 42
case 50
bluray 30
amd apu 90 (6550)
320gig hdd 65
keyboard & mouse 20
windows 7/8 100 dollars

$457

granted the video is a bit low end, but completely doable for under 500 for a good performing computer

could knock the cpu down to 40 and then get say and amd6670 for 60 which would boost the price 10 bucks.

Meltdowns and jeering at meltdowns are both premature at this stage, since there's no reason to believe this is the only Steambox project Valve was working on or what the engineer was talking about earlier.

Occam's Razor man. Valve has been discussing special hardware for Steam in the last months. A company and Valve announce a hardware product, a gaming box made for Steam - as well as a direct investment to Valve. Which of the two options do you pick

1. This is not the Steam box, because Valve has in fact multiple hardware projects ongoing, possibly with a different partner, and they will announce the real Steam box later. This is something else they were involved in.

2. This is the Steam box.

Just because it has a 35W TDP, 350FLOPs gaming performance and the vendor has priced it previously at $999 should not force all logic out of the window.

Good luck tricking people to get them to play PC games and then tell them their new device won't play Diablo 3 or WoW.

Do you know anything about PC gaming? Blizzard's MO for their games is to have them be able to run on older hardware so they don't limit themselves to only people who have elite gaming PCs. Not to mention the biggest games right now are LoL and Dota 2 and those system requirements and embarrassingly low.

If this is steambox Gabe lied about it competing with PS4 and Xbox 3.

Or did he?

Based on a model that's $1000? People are just better off building their own custom rig to connect to their TV.

I think Valve is trying a different approach here. The portability of this lil bastard is undeniable.

But no way I'm paying over 400 dollars for something like this from the get go.

I've looked at high end GPUs and know they are huge, they wont fit inside of that thing. I have also looked at low end GPUs and while they are not huge they are wide, I dont believe that they would fit either. What am I missing, what kind of GPU can this thing realistically have?

Ohh yeah! ooouuuyaaa ouya...

So the trend is to make tiny form factor boxes with their own content deliver system, what a surprise!

I bet it can fit mobile GPUs in there. ;-)

OH SNAP.

I hope for the health and sanity of this forum that the PS4 / 720 do not rival the Wii U in terms of power.

I don't know if GAF would be able to survive the meltdown that would happen if Orbis/Durango were only incrementally better than the existing HD systems but had more ram and stuff for service oriented operating system shenanigans plus Kinect or whatever other bullshit Sony wants to use. It would be damn hilarious though.

I adore the design of this thing. It will be interesting to see how much performance they can squeeze into that small case.

Blizzard games run on linux?

I would truly go back to PC gaming then, as long as it's not gimped by MS Marketplace

The launch title for Piston will be Half Life 3.

It will be Piston exclusive.

This is the Valve master plan.

Wouldn't only matching next-gen consoles for a price around a thousand dollars already be pointless?

Even if it was $299, if it did was match current gen performance wise, why would anyone buy it?

Something more power, but still relatively affordable, like the Alienware X51 is the only way I can see this working out.

If it doesn't at least match the performance of the next-gen consoles, this'll be pretty pointless.

with luck u get WiiU Performance, maybe 100-200Gflops more but games for it will be much less optimized in comparsion with WiiU Games.

Far far away from next gen consoles.

Then every 2 years you upgrade it, it's modular.

Console prices, xbox live, etc. vs. steam prices and modular hardware.

I honestly am laughing at just how high hopes some Valve fanbois have had for Steambox.

People are kidding themselves if they honestly believe Valve are going to come out with any significant hardware or technology. They don't have the expertise, resources, or financial power to come up with some magical box or virtual reality system.

I expect Steambox is nothing more then a licensed product. Valve will license a opperating system and it's steam platform out to various manufacturers to create their own steamboxes.

I doubt it would be more, yet alone get any where 100-200 gigaflops more

The Xi3's TDP is 5w less then the Wii U, so both are basically on par with one another in that retrospect. From an engineering perspective i'd personally put my money on the Wii U being more powerful. It's a dedicated games console, and not based on x64 architecture like the Xi3. Nintendo also have the resources and expertise from their partners like AMD and IBM.

At this stage, I wouldn't be surprised. I think this place might be in for a bit of a shock when these are announced.

True, but most people who would do this have already done so. However, the concept of a small gaming PC that can sit beside a TV that boots right into big picture and act almost exactly like a console is a much easier sell than telling people who are used to console gaming to build a gaming rig and run an HDMI cable across their living room.

If this would happen why Square Enix (and other Devs) created they new Engine? For the dozen PC games they make?

Not to get too sidetracked, but didn't people complain about how unimpressive the UE4 demo was? I'm not suggesting Wii U levels, but I think people expecting a massive leap at affordable prices are in for a shock. Only a few months to go...

That's cute. $800 X51's can barely outperform current consoles. Somehow pc's that are $300 less will be able to greatly outperform it?

Links to these $500 pcs please.
G860 CPU
H77 MOBO
8GB RAM
Source 210 CASE
HD6870/GTX560 GPU
VP450 PSU
64GB SSD/ $70 HDD
$20 DVD Burner

Exactly $500

*Barely Outperform is laughable. Consoles will always cater as low as they can go. 120FPS is mindblowing and yet so many are stuck at 30.

Why the DVD burner? I disconnected mine to add another HDD.

Some people want one and it's in budget that I can't use for another part upgrade that matters.
I don't include a DVD drive on the sub $450 PC in the PC Thread though.

I thought that's what we always assumed. I personally expected most of them to come out with something maybe similar to the Alienware X51 in terms of principle.

Is this the thread where people who have no idea about PC gaming can spew shit about PC gaming?

Thing looks nice, hope it's one of many Steam branded PCs though. I want a better form-factor for the living room.
