vg247-PS4: new kits shipping now, AMD A10 used as base, final version next summer

Did you see engadgets interview with john taylor from amd? He hinted at 'leading the' next gen consoles and having more than just and GPUs in them. Talked about how the future of CPUs and architecture being fixed-function hardware acceleration where each part specializes in what it does. No more single, giant hulking CPU being asked to do everything. Only what its good at.

Your thoughts?
That's been the idea behind HSA. Multiple CPUs, FPGA, DSP, CPU, GPGPU and an intelligent Compiler or HSAIL engine that can target code for the best device to run it.

Multiple DSPs in the PS4, maybe a small FPGA and of course GPGPU and CPUs.

Is this old news?

In the spirit of speculation that PS4 won't be called PS4, have a look at:

http://www.psorbis.com

Now: having a subdomain on your developer website for a platform codename is one thing. But registering it as a domain name? Might suggest it's going to be used beyond being a codename...

Are you sure it was Sony who registered the domain?

Sounds like 720 will just be an Xbox branded PC from ms and powered by amd, whereas ps4 will go the direction amd is trying to nudge the industry. It could end up being extremely agile and surprising in graphics quality despite not seeming so on paper with raw specs.

Yeah, we went on to discuss that...we can't be sure who did so don't necessarily take it as anything.
Yeah, VeriSign's WhoIs returns only this:

Domain Name: PSORBIS.COM
Registrar: GODADDY.COM, LLC
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Name Server: NS63.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
Name Server: NS64.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
Status: clientDeleteProhibited
Status: clientRenewProhibited
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Status: clientUpdateProhibited
Updated Date: 28-mar-2012
Creation Date: 28-mar-2012
Expiration Date: 28-mar-2013
And GoDaddy's WhoIs only tells it's Domains By Proxy, LLC that is the registrant. Sony I haven't seen use GoDaddy. They normally go through Corporation Service Company. The PlayStation domain is under Network Solutions, LLC though. I can look into this more.

and with a little bit of Cell dusted on top..

Thinking back to those previous sony patents displayed, a few of them referred to an "add-on" box that could be connected to your main device and provide extra capability. They could perhaps sell a "Cell/backward compatibility box" that connects to the psnext for those desperate for the functionality

edit - as discussed further down it may not necessarily have been Sony who registered these names so...

It's normal, MS registered all kinds of domain names for Xbox 360.

I have a feeling Orbis won't be called PS4 but won't be called Orbis either. PlayStation will certainly be a part of it though.

4 is unlucky in Japan, vita wasn't PSP 2, and pretty much everyone else doesn't use the incremental numbers in products, save for phones. Really hoping its not PS4 so Sony can help relaunch and revitalize the brand image. Especially when consumers compare it to the competition.

Call it the PSi.

Cause it's smart like that.

:p

edit: actually, what with all the 4k buzzword about, just call it the PS4K.

on a subconscious level, that will outnumber xbox 8 or 720 or x360 2 or whatever. 4000 is cool round number.

Calling it the PS4k would probably be misleading because there will be very little 4k content on it. Certainly not for games. 4k is is four times the resolution of 1080p and nine times 720p.

Do I win a prize for talking about my penis on the Internet???
If they dont name it Playstation 4, then dont they pretty much have to call it just "Playstation"..? I cant imagine another fitting name, and I think it sends a strange message to call it Playstation Ikiru/Sei or some other random tag.

couldn't they just make sure that they had a nice hw upscaler on ps4 this time (rsx was crap for this i believe), so they could support 4k resolution everywhere?

Anything else than Playstation 4 is beyond pathetic. As a huge Playstation fan I really think Sony as a whole will burn in a fire pit if they mess up like that.

Cause so many game series went straight from 3 to 5, right?

A game sure, but an entire console? These comments were coming from Japanese. I'd trust their insight into their culture more than a random forum member any day. They seem to be pretty superstitious so why would Sony risk upsetting home base just to continue a silly naming convention? Revitalizing the brand is a better idea if done right.

Also, the origin of 4 being unlucky is the actual pronunciation sounding similar to the pronunciation of 'death'. Its possible that other variations of the number don't invoke the similarity, ie: 'fourth', or 'IV'. I don't speak Japanese though.

I think it's 'shi' that is death. But 4 can be pronounced in two ways - 'shi' or 'yon' (not really sure why, but its the same with 7)

Surely there are examples of major products with a four in it in Japan?

Many, especially in regards to games. The 4 reasoning doesn't work out but the console not being called PS4 makes sense to me after the naming of the Vita.

I really doubt they're going to go with the Playstation 4 as the name. I'm sure you've all heard about the number 4 meaning "death", and "misfortune" in Japan.

Whatever they choose, the name'll be better than the Wii U for god's sake.

Ya pretty much anything will be better than that.

Seeing as Sony uses the English words for their numbers for Playstation that kind of just makes it all hilarious to watch people talk about it. Playstation 2 wasn't called Playstation Ni in Japan, it was called "プレイステーション2" and pronounced "Pureisuteshon Tsu". PS3 was called "プレイステーション3" and pronounced "pureisuteshon suri" Sony nor have the general populous ever referred to it with Japanese numbering.

Pretty much the same reason you see the 4th games in series. You will find many products in Japan with the number "4". You won't find many Japanese products in Japan with "四". If they don't name it 4, I doubt it'll be because of "shi" and more with their general changing in naming scheme among their products.

Kaveri APU HSA compatible built on the bulk silicon process at 28mm are going to be available to consumers by the second half of 2013/Q4.

http://www.slashgear.com/amd-announces-kabini-kaveri-richland-and-temash-apus-at-ces-2013-07263836/

Kaveri is a new 28nm chip that features heterogeneous system architecture (HSA), and it should ship to customers sometime during the second half of this year.

She also mentioned that the new APU’s are “the industry’s first x86 quad-core SoC,” proving the company’s leadership in the gaming industry.

Could this be in PS4?

Saw a random comment below that VGleaks article:

Mahin Islam says:

PS4 Alpha Dev-Kit Specs:

CPU:

The PS4 will include an x86 architecture AMD Fusion APU codenamed Liverpool. The CPU portion of the APU will have 2 Bulldozer Modules clocked at 3.2 GHz. The iGPU will be similar to an HD 7660D, and will work in tandem with the dedicated PS4 GPU.

GPU:

The GPU is an 800 MHz Cape Verde, comparable to an underclocked HD 7770. Once fully optimized and combined with the iGPU, the PS4 can push up to 1.8 TFLOPS of SP compute performance. That is as powerful as an HD 7850. It will play 1080p Native and 720p 3d, and feature 4x MLAA and 16x AF. The PS4 will be about 10x more powerful than the PS3, and will be able to play high quality games in full 1080p, 60 FPS, with high levels of AA and AF.

RAM/Storage/Media/Other:

The PS4 will feature 2GB Unified RAM, shared between the CPU and GPU. It will read 50GB Blu-Ray disks with a 6x player. It will also have 320GB HDD.

Predicted Price/Release Date:

The PS4 will probably come out in Quarter 4 2014, with a price of $499.

The person in the quote is regurgitating facts from the article. RAM has been increased to 4 GB recnetly. Either stacked or 2.5D wide for fast bandwith. An underclocked 7770 will only net you 1.3 TF, so that can't be right.

It will be 1.8 TF underclocked Pitcairn, 4 GB High Bandwith memory, all on one APU. Should be amazing :). Also no $499, this machine will cost less than $399 to manufacture.

Also Fall of 2013 son -_-.

If this is what the specs really will be with a price of $399, then I will almost certainly be there Day 1. I know Sony will at least have cross game chat this time, because the Vita has it. I also know from interviews and such that they will do all they can for their next home console. I have a feeling they're gonna play some really hard ball that I will enjoy watching and playing.

both the article and that comment are from too early in 2012 to be taken seriously. especially how much we've discovered about AMD's plans/products since then.

this is a much better explanation than "games don't skip from 3 to 5".
