Eurogamer/CVG Rumor: Sony to have new controller for PS4; CVG: PS4 unveiling in weeks

I don't mind the Dual Shock, it's still the best controller for third person action games. That said, I prefer the triggers (not the bumpers!), the analog sticks and the ergonomic shape of the 360 controller.

I've been saying that a Vita like controller would be awesome. Hell, if Sony is cutting production costs of the Vita and with the handheld having been a failure, why not use it for the Oribis? I say launch the Oribis with a redesigned Vita as its controller. Since this is the year where they will cut production costs on it, if they packaged the cheaper redesigned Vita with each single Oribis allowing it to be multi function with the Oribis games but then you can also play Vita games on it they have hit 2 markets right there. You have a handheld and a console controller. Since it all works with bluetooth allowing people to also use their DS3's would go a long way. Everyone now will also have access to Sony's handheld that have bought the Oribis, so selling software and memory is where they will make their money.

This idea is way out there, but it can work and would really trump Nintendo's poor attempt with the gamepad.

I don't want anything like the Vita as a console controller. The vita has horrendous shoulder buttons and pretty bad sticks. The sticks work for a handheld but for console gaming it would be a nightmare.

Make it bigger, add R2/L2 and clickable analog sticks and we have a winner.

worth the weight

If by new design they mean the exact same controller with vita's dpad and move / navigation controller triggers, i'm fine with it.

The L2 and R2 buttons on the sixaxis/dualshock3 are crimes against humanity.

I've never understood the complaints about symmetrical analog stick placement though. My hands are symmetrical, so why on Earth would I want asymmetrical sticks? If your left thumb was 5cm longer than your right thumb then it would make perfect sense to me, but I'm guessing people like that are hard to find.

Er, it's because your thumbs naturally rest where the dpad is when you hold the controller. Using the sticks requires a somewhat uncomfortable contortion of the hands. Of course it is no different with a GCN or 360 controller, but given that the dpad is rarely used these days it would seem to make sense to put the main input method in the primary position.

Of course a Wiimote/Move setup would basically solve the problem, but people don't like nice things.

So in 4 weeks top we are going to see PS4? Not buying it. To show it in February makes no sense to me.

If true it just means PS4 is crap and they are scared of MS.

Well aegies has said he expects big news at DPS....so something just before that would be 4 weeks (I still can't see Orbis being revealed at DPS)

It wouldn't be without precedent to show hardware early in the year. Sony showed the vita for the first time in a February if i remember correctly.

My gut says their gonna try to combine the move with the dualshock, but like a patent from before it is going to have the ability to split into two controllers a hand.

Hmm... unveiling in weeks. Does this mean PlayStation Meeting?

They have started shipping PS4's and when they hit the shelves they'll see who notices.
Everyone will buy one just to see what it is, Sony are back in business.

As long as it's more ergonomic, I'm fine with whatever. I just hope they don't fall in line with what the Wii U is doing.

EDIT: On second though, if it's like the Wii U pro pad, I'm fine with that. Most comfortable controller I've ever used.

I don't mind change as long as it's for the better.

But I hope it's better than the 360 controller which I can only use for one or two genres only.

The Dualshock design is my favorite. That being said, I wouldn't mind a revision if it's nothing too drastic. And let's hope they carry over the Vita godlike D-Pad.

Any controller that can offer the same/or a better level of control and comfort as the DS3, while also lending itself to new forms of control, and a better way to interact with media will be totally welcome in my books.

That's why I was saying if it was redesigned to function more like a console controller. It can be done and would be cool. Just a crazy thought I had and a way that it could also save Sony's handheld market since the Vita in some form would still be alive.

I have no idea what they're going to do. A controller with a screen in it is completely at odds with a controller that can split. I don't even know how that could be pulled off.

So it looks like they plan to do the same thing they did with the Vita if this rumour is true. Playstation Meeting in late January or February and launch by the end of the year.

Seems like a smart move to me, this way they can spend E3 more on showcasing games and less on the explaing the Hardware itself.

Interesting to note that the patent Sony field around biometric sensors on a controller talked about coupling that with a eye gaze tracking. From a camera on your TV and/or on the controller.

The stuff they talk about doing with the bio sensors are pretty interesting.

Judging by their patent filings they've been tinkering with a lot of different stuff, though, so who knows what'll actually make it into the system and what won't.

Eh, I hope they don't do biometric stuff or eye tracking. It doesn't really seem like the kinda thing that would fit gaming well (or interest me at all).

I'd be very happy with a Vita controller (in terms of tech) but with a more comfy design. That'd be great
...except for the price
.

hope its a carbon copy of the 360 design

dual shock hurts my hand now after getting used to the 360 pad. i dont care if they copy someone if it ultimately improves the product

I've been saying the Vita (or, more accurately, a stripped down Vita-like shell that emulates some of the Vita's functionality but without all of the guts) would wind up as the PS4 controller for a while now.

Been beating that drum for close to the past year in assorted posts:

- Vita PSN Game And Service Thread (November 19th, 2012)

Hey guys, should Xbox Smart Glass be the pad for the Xbox 720?
No. Now THAT would be silly.
The Vita should be a controller for Sony so they can keep pace with Japanese developer support and get multi-screen Wii U ports for the Japanese market.

The next Xbox has no need for these things and has no chance to compete in Japan no matter what they do so they should focus on what they do best.
- Just what is Sony doing with Vita? If they've given-up, they should just kill it. (November 5th, 2012)

Clearly the Vita needs an exclusive on the next Twilight movie or Angry Birds sequel in order to be accepted by the supposed hardcore GAF gaming enthusiasts.

Once it's on Oprah and accepted by the mainstream they'll all say: "You know what? That Vita is kind of cool. I just played that Gravity Rush title and had a blast with it."

Never fear. They'll react the exact same way once its bundled with every PS4 that's sold.
(And when I say a Vita will be bundled, I don't necessarily mean the Vita in its current incarnation.)
- Gamasutra: PlayStation Vita's biggest challenge: Convincing developers (September 28th, 2012)

Without moneyhatting for third-party exclusives, you're exactly right.
Then again, Sony hasn't shown a willingness to cut price either.

As best as I can tell, Sony is taking a long haul approach to the Vita where it will remain on life support getting a modicum of support for the next couple years until Sony decides to pump some first-party development into it or... what's more likely... to integrate it as a control device for the PS4 to facilitate Wii U-style multi-screen ports and homegrown efforts.

That does seem to be the most logical approach all things considered.
And even as far back as...

- Playstation Vita western launch thread | It only does everything, everywhere. (February 13th, 2012)

Fun to see the Playstation blog guys casually hint at PS3+Vita being their answer to Wii U and Microsoft's X360 successor with tablet controller. (Incidentally, I believe this is the way they'll go. Sony isn't releasing a new platform - i.e. PS4 - when the next Xbox hits retail. Instead they'll bundle PS3s and Vitas together in one package.)
It's a necessary step in order to facilitate ports of Japanese-developed Wii U titles that replicate the Vita's touchscreen gameplay functionality.

I will continue to stick to my guns here.

So you finally managed to get your WiiU to connect to the internet? If not your post history will be scrutinized.

I did not. I still have to shift the whole machine if I want to connect.

Doesn't matter though. Bought NG3. Enjoying it a lot.

Still don't like the system, but I just won't use it much. No harm done.

On topic, if the PS4 had a touch screen, and the 720 didn't, that would be enough to convince me to go Xbox first.

This sounds familiar to me:

– Sony is near the middle end part of their Project Orbis, their next generation PS4. It will not be called Playstation 4, teams have started to call the final name as Omni. Omni will reflect their new hardware and content delivery philosophy. Omni will be “very capable” of doing modern day graphics compared to a Direct X 11 level of technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 2. Compared to Wii U, it is better, but not the biggest leap in the world according to developer friends of mine. The key is the Omniviewer, a thin, lite and slick head mounted autosteroptic display that can track the users head and presents a 360 image view with semi transparent AMOLED screens. This can turn any TV into a 3D TV, as well as add extra augmented reality information outside of the TV screen. One application from an entertainment perspective seeing movies in 2k, 4k or IMAX resolutions as their original size where you have to move your head to look at the full picture being displayed. Can also synch with the Vita. The new controllers whether it’s the Dual-Moves or the Classic DualShock will have pulse sensors in the grips for biofeedback gameplay. Plans are a Basic Unit with 160 gigs and just the system with controller at $350-$399 and one with the Omniviewer and a pack-in game for $450-$499. Aims are for a September 2013 launch.

The good thing is hell, it's well over half through January. Soon it will be February.

Absolute worst case scenario (aka they wait all the way to E3), the time we have left to wait is dwindling fast.

I think the controller that people prefer is the one that they've used the most. Sony hasn't changed the Dual Shock because they've been so successfull with the PSone and PS2, so they think "why change a winning formula". The dual shock isn't what made those systems successfull though. Hopefully they've realized now that the contoller is very much outdated, which I think they have.
I'm pretty sure there are many gamers out there who use both the PS3 and Xbox 360, and prefer one control over the other on both consoles. I think that the only concern people have regarding controllers is if it is good to use or not. I've used both and personally i strongly prefer symetric analog sticks. I'm sure i could get used to asymetric sticks as well, but so far i prefor symetric ones.

The controllers are not more outdated than eachother since they both have the same functions, and they are both built around the same principles (analog sticks, 4 face buttons, 4 shoulder buttons, d-pad, handles for better grip etc.). I'm sure that it is possible to improve both controllers, but i'm not really seeing why one is more outdated than the others concidering how very similar the controllers actually are in functions.

Hope they don't include biometric sensors/screens or anything of that sort. If it's not present on both consoles controllers, developers will not bother using it.
