[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

Could be that they want to add quite a bit of stuff to it in the future so its there just in case. They'll probably give back whatever they don't use to gaming down the line anyway.

That was the plan at 1:1.5. So ya adding maybe...the entire encyclopedia Britannica as an OS. As I said I am not so sure this isn't a mishmash of rumors. But if they suddenly had to add that much back into the OS reserve slot. They deserve a lot of ire directed their way.

Oooh. Secret sauce 'compute hardware'. That kind of came out of nowhere.

And they say only 512MB is reserved for the OS. (They say 2 sources say 3GB is reserved for Durango's)

And same CPU as Durango. 8 Jaguars @ 1.6Ghz.

Isn´t this bad? I mean it´s too little and might bottle neck the OS in the future. They had a huge problem updating the PS3 because of no more memory.

DF suggested it would be for kinect and apps and the general OS, basically what the 360 has now but way more overboard. They seem to think Sony won't be going for most of that stuff and will leave most of the RAM for raw gaming performance.

I can play Football manager, watch a movie, browse the internet and use FM scout (database app) on Windows 7, with 4GB of ddr3 and still leave about 800 left.

So unless MS is shooting for some over the top OS, having almost 6X the amount of ram reserved for it when compared to next competitor just seems...ridiculous.

But it can happen I guess.

Orbis' "bespoke GPU-like "Compute" module" a bolted on CBE for bc, physics and graphic computations?

That would be smart.

no, not really. it's about the best could expect from the power and form factor requirements, though; they certainly didn't cheap out on ram.

whereas last gen consoles were shipping with desktop parts, next gen they'll be shipping with laptop parts.

it's going to be a developer by developer basis i guess, and will depend on how strong a hand the pc audience can play when it comes to ports. even a craggy old 2500k will run laps around an octocore jaguar, but plenty of dual cores which smoked the xenon came off badly in ports due to its tri-core architecture.

Yeah. That's what I meant. Clearly a quad core Intel will smoke those CPUs, but it'll be interesting to see whether 8 core engines become common and, thus, becomes an issue on the PC side.

Orbis's architecture sounds really good. It won't match current high-end PC setups, but it's still a very, very nice jump from PS3. I would prefer a higher CPU clock speed, but I understand it's important to keep power consumption down for cooling and reliability purposes. 512 MB RAM reserved for OS is fine with me.

Durango's on the other hand...not as good. 3 GB reserved for the OS??? That's ridiculously excessive and hard to believe. I hope that is false.

thanks for the laugh
how does a 7970m stack up to a 7850/7870?

in its fully clocked state it looks to be about on a par with a 6950/560ti, which were the mid-high enthusiast cards of choice in late 2010 (though it didn't quite settle into the $250 sweet spot until early 2011).

for comparison sake, on release, the xbox 360 packed the equivalent of a contemporary mid-high enthusiast card.

It's good for games.

I guess it depends what their OS plans are, right?

I think they did a good job with 256MB on Vita, and that presumably has headroom too still. I think they'd be able to do good things with 512.

Specs seem in-line with what I expected, so I'm happy. Interesting we now hear of a separate "Compute" module and I'm still no completely convinced of GDDR5.

Also isn't the 7970M a 100W part?

I was trying to figure out how they guess 7970M, but I guess it adds up.

Running at 850MHz and featuring 20 of AMD's "Graphics Core Next" compute units, our information suggests that Orbis shaves off 10 per cent of that number, offering up 18 CUs in total, and sees a mild downclock to 800MHz. Incorporated into a design dedicated to cutting-edge visuals and gameplay, this hardware has some serious potential.

It is perhaps more than coincidence that these specs offer up the 1.84 teraflops metric for the Orbis GPU that was mooted yesterday

According to AMD the 7970M is 2176 GFLOPS.

2176 GFLOPS * (800Mhz/850Mhz) * (18CU/20CU) = 1.84 TFLOPS

The question in my mind is what is the result of taking this GPU and sticking it in the APU with the 8 cores and pairing it with GDDR5? The PC frame rate test DF does is more than useless IMO. The PC is using DDR3 and having to transfer data over a PCIe bus to the GPU, not at all the same as the PS4 design.

3 core (6 threads) PPC engines were the main target this gen. A a two thread C2D had little trouble running those games. Why would the situation change, especially now that we look to be all set in x86? (sans Nintendo).

3GB in Durango is wrong, as also two cores for OS.
So, how much for OS? 4? :p

So who else doesn't care about these leaked next gen consoles.
I'm more interested when we see what it looks like than what's under the hood. Ill let the games they showcase speak for themselves.

So whats the odds of a fully software emulated PS2 shipping within the PS4? Or is Sony going to screw everyone and put PS2 games on the store only.

Doesn´t sound too hot.
Show me the graphics this thing can produce, if they aren´t what i consider a generational leap i´m out.

I'm having trouble putting all of this into perspective.. While I have a general grasp on some of this tech stuff, I still don't think I quite get what Im reading.. can anyone summarize it and define it?

They sound unimpressed in the last paragraph.

So basically as expected - both systems will be a lot more modest at launch compared to their predecessors. Smaller silicon, lower power consumption.

Hmm if this pans out then I have a pretty good (bad?) feeling we are going to see an interesting price tag with the PS4.

I can see this 3GB for the os being stuck in peopls mind now for a long time, even if the box is out and we know better ;)

Now that they stopped manufacturing the PS2, I honestly think they'll include a software-backed PS2 emulator. There really shouldn't be any limiting factor anymore in emulating the PS2.
