But the tree unlocks the ability to use certain gems? Or does it augment the abilities? I think its really cool, just having a hard time wrapping my head around the intricacies. Only have a level 8 witch so far.

Gems only requirement are stats, so you gotta make sure you pick up the right stats in the Passive Skill tree.

Augmenting? It's a global increase rather than certain gems. Increase Projectile Damage only affect Projectile Skills, etc.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

It does not unlock the ability to use certain gems - and it doesn't augment the ability directly. But by putting points on "Physical Damage increased", you'll indirectly make your melee-gems more powerful.

No, you get abilities through gems that drop from monsters/quest rewards/trading with other players. The tree is ALL passive abilities. Things like +damage with certain weapon type, + elemental damage, +accuracy. There are those types of passives, and then there are build defining passives that you work towards like Blood Magic which makes it so you use Health to cast spells, or something like this one passive that you can get that makes it so you NEVER miss a melee attack, but you cannot get crits anymore.

All gems are usable provided you meet the level and attribute requirements. You can gain attributes from the tree or from gear.

It augments the abilities in a general sense, for example getting a 10% increased spell damage node will make all your spells do 10% more damage.

Nope. the Passive skill tree is simply stats and bonuses. You get stuff like +Life or +Mana or +Strenght. You also get stuff like +Defense with a shield or +Damage with a One Handed Sword. And then you get the big one who are "game changers" stuff like "You cant miss but cant crit" or "You cant be stunned but enemies cant miss" or "You do not benefit of the effect of your shield, but your minions do"

Gems have a some requirement on them, but nothing to do with the Passive tree.

Just look at the Tree here ,you will understand.

Its intricate, but I wouldn't say complicated. The skill gems and the passive skill tree let you build your character up in a way that reflects your play style. As for the requirements for using gems, they depend upon your level and how high certain stats are ex: str/dex/int. It hasn't completely clicked with me yet, but I'm getting the hang of it.

Thoughts on this build?

Increased AoE range, Elemental damage, Resistance, Armor, ES, then that ES leech keystone that's in the top left somewhere.

Just playing around. Gonna to be Slammin' the ground. Running Added Fire and Hatred. It feels like there's not enough damage, but it's really hard to calculate without getting the gear.

WELL, I played a few hours of the beta tonight, and I have to say that so far I'm impressed with PoE. That's not to say it's perfect. It is lacking some of that Blizzard spit and shine that they give their games. Just little details in interface and such that Blizzard really does well. However, I'm having a blast with the passives tree and these skill gems. Their is a lot of customization to be made here, and most importantly, CHOICES. I get to build my own character, not just pick what skills I want to use out of a huge pool that unlock as I go. It's a nice feeling to be able to build a character and then have that character grow and develop as I level, based on choices that I make, not the development team.

It's amazing how much of a difference that little detail can make when playing a game.

And the graphics. If only Diablo III had the art style of PoE. I can't believe I'm saying that. It's so incredibly reminiscent of Diablo II so far, PoE is clearly inspired by it.

I really like the game. Can't wait to get further into it and really delve in to playing around with building characters.

My only gripe about the game so far is that the FoV seems way too zoomed, but maybe I'm just missing something?

Another thing the graphics has over D3 is atmosphere - on some stages, the art style, lighting, combined with the awesome music just makes the whole thing very atmospheric.

Played a fair amount of this last night, on a Ranger and Duelist.

Didn't really set up a build for my Ranger, just wanted to play around with some bow stuff. On the Duelist, I did some reading; I came across Kripp's 2H Ranger setup, which was based on another person's 2H Ranger concept of using Lightning Strike, and the idea looked kind of appealing. Planning on doing a similar build using the Duelist:

http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-...utfJuqjJ-0Eca2abPdEGkwlb6eOvcgucKiiLA83z1wKY=

There's a lot of stuff I'm just eyeballing, I'm not going to bother starting any kind of math on some of these passives until I get OB patch notes. I'm also considering a tweaked concept utilizing Flicker Strike since that sounds like a good time with a 2H.

Played a good amount today. Seeing all the build of the day videos and looking at the skill grid makes me laugh at D3's attempts and how they said there would be more "good builds" just not as many bad builds.

Not trying to dive into it too much now, but I definitely look forward to experimenting later on.

I hope this game is as good as I think its going to be because I really expect much of it.

I will see this Wednesday if open beta starts.

Great point! Something I think Path of Exile absolutely nailed is that dark feeling and a terrible sense of isolation. I think the soundtrack really supports that. It brings me back to my days playing Diablo as a child and the haunting feeling I had as I progressed deeper underground. It took me a few years to finally overcome my fear and beat the game.

Glad to see they are working. already on content beside act3ex.

It's crazy that they have things like that in production considering they are just 20 people.

It's like the first time seeing TotalBiscuit or Darksydephil.

Same here.

Got my Duelist up to 24 or something. I'm actually really enjoying this character so far... melee seems to have a rough start but now that things are moving along I'm pretty much cruising through Act 2. Pretty much in love with all of the systems in the game right now; the bartering system is really clever, the itemization is extremely well thought-out (which beautifully interacts with the economy), the skill tree greatly rewards planning and player knowledge... so much thought went into the foundation design for this game. After D3 I wasn't sure if I'd ever really be excited for this kind of game again, but I'm very much looking forward to Wednesday's launch.

Not a huge fan of the character dolls. Especially the witch and marauder. Still trying to decide on a class. :(

Have you tried restarting the client after changing the settings?

Its unnecessary, it cuts framerate to 60% and i remember when it was bugged on nvidia cards and You can see bug realtime, also the whole post-processing technology is shader based, so completely real-time, like ENB or sweetfx shader.
I'll try other areas and see what changes there.

So do you eventually reach a point where your gems stop leveling up? Or maybe even a point where they're able to level up but you don't want them to? Mana costs seem to increase along with gem level.

Yeah, some gems you would want to hold off on leveling for mana cost reasons (Clarity is a good example). There's even a vendor recipe that allows you to downgrade a gem if you need to.

Hey guys, quick question. Do I get the full value when selling unidentified items to a merch?

It seems that I never have enough SoW and my stash is getting full of low tier uncommons.

Someone with more experience can correct me if I'm wrong, but with my limited time played during the closed beta, sold unidentified items yield different crafting items than if it had been identified. I don't know whether the value of items you receive is any different, however.

From the FAQ.
You don't have to identify before you sell but it doesn't grant you more shards. Instead selling identified and unidentified items grants you different shards for different orbs. Unidentified items grant you Transmutation Shards, whereas identified items grant you Alteration shards.

The FAQs are are pretty informative, read them myself this morning.

For unidentified magic or rare You get same reward as for identified crappy rare/blue. Identified items can yield higher currency if they have very high roll of prefix/suffix.

---
Post-processing adds bloom in some locations and sometimes alter colors lightly, its not worth activating and framerate cost. Spell effects, armor shaders etc looks the same on both settings.
Forest areas looks better with post-processing though.

ok so my only gripe so far about the game is that town portals timeout after a while. I went afk, and came back and it had closed...

I see no reason for this to be a mechanic. At least we have Waypoints, but even then I had to walk and fight across a big zone to get to where I was...

Here's the full list: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/15223

For your question specifically using Magic items:

UnID random magic gives Transmutation Shards
ID random magic gives Alteration Shards

It's different for rares and stuff. Very complex.
