My love affair with JRPGs basically ended with FF7. The game was so far off from where I was hoping RPGs in general were headed that it kinda turned me off for years. It really wasn't until I played FFXI (mainly as a break from EQ) and XII that I started giving them a chance again, and went back and played FFIX.
I keep wanting to try the Persona series, but the games seem to go on sale whenever I'm broke, almost like clockwork.
I can't explain why I'm giving this a chance, other than that it sounds like the classic games I loved when I was younger, and the art and music are my cup of tea.

I actually loved FF7. But I think I can see why you like FF9 and 12. They both had more of a fantasy look than FF7/8/13 do. FF10 seemed sort of like a mix. But, yeah, it sucks that I haven't liked any of the Final Fantasy games (XIII trilogy) this gen. Hopefully Versus comes out and is what I want.
And it still bothers me ordering from Namco Bandai for the first time through Digital River, not knowing when exactly they'll ship and who they are shipping with (UPS/USPS/FED-EX/etc.) I'm hoping UPS. They always leave a note if I'm not home and drop it off at the apartment office. Fed-Ex is like "nope. Just gonna knock once and leave the package at your door so either it'll fall in when you open the door or somebody could possibly snatch it."

I've been playing XenoBlade Chronicles lately. So far, it's the best JRPG of this gen.

Too soon to say, honestly. For me it comes down to Persona 4, Xenoblade Chronicles, Valkyria Chronicles, and Ni no Kuni will likely be in that discussion.

I guess it'll be based on personal taste. But yeah, all those games you listed are just amazing.
Just so stoked that Ni no Kuni delivers big time!
I've beaten Ni no Kuni but haven't quiiite played enough Xenoblade to know for sure where the two stand. Leaning Ni no Kuni, but I'm still early in Xenoblade.

Tales Of Vesperia was my favorite RPG since Dragon Quest VIII. I own Xenoblade, Persona 4, and Trails In The Sky, but have not started them yet. I guess that's some serious AAA backlog. Lol

I'm just peeved the Wizard book was only for the CE. That should have been the real preorder bonus of the game.

I'll agree with that as far as I go. I can't really stand the dungeon parts of that game, every battle revolves around finding a weakness out of 4-5 elements and then spamming the correct spell until it's dead. The dungeons go on for so long too.
If this game can add some more tactics and avoid that problem that plagues most jrpgs then it'll automatically be an improvement.
Love all of the games on your list. I guess we are just talking home consoles because the DS is home to some amazing JRPGs. But for home I'd have to add Tales of Vesperia, love that game. I also think Lost Odyssey doesn't get enough love.

Never. It's too cluttered with all those characters badly photoshopped into that other background.
I prefer the one we're getting, it's much more elegant.
There are no random battles in Persona 4.

To each their own, I think its way to plain. I hate logo only covers. I like to see the setting and characters of said game.

I don't think that SCEA has ever allowed pre-loading. Euro PSN was able to pre-load AC3 while the US couldn't.

This version is based on the All-in-one re-release which includes all DLC from the get-go as well as an easy mode and I think it also includes a lot of more minor tweaks. All of the major Japanese gaming websites are based on the original one which didn't have any of that. Not that it really got bad reviews in Japan anyway.

What was the DLC? I'm going to guess more familiars/costumes knowing Japan lol.
I've put about 9 hours into Ni no Kuni so far, and I can honestly say XenoBlade for me is definitely ranked higher. It just has a bigger, broader scope, more interesting story overall and it feels much more deep as an RPG.
Not that I don't love Ni no Kuni, though! It just feels "RPG Lite" in some aspects. So far the bosses have all been really easy, and the locations/ towns are all pretty small with pretty minimal interaction apart from getting people's hearts and sidequests. Although the Battle System is pretty incredible. Also, it's got that Ghibli feel which I love!

After a while I just got tired of the style and narrative of most post-FFVII JRPGs. They seemed to focus more on dramatic storylines than gameplay. The first game I played that reminded me of earlier JRPGs was Dragon Quest IX (still the only DQ I've played so far). I love it because the game get's straight down to the gameplay without 30-minute anime cut scenes, letting me see and explore the world for myself without overuse of cinematic exposition.
I started to feel the same thing when I got to the world map in the Ni No Kuni demo. It felt like a classic world map which I've never seen before in current gen console graphics. This could all be however because I've barely played any console JRPGs this gen. I have an unplayed copy of Vesperia sitting on my shelf, and the first time I actually saw a real JRPG "town" on a current gen system was when I played the FFXIII-2 demo.

I didn't think Xenoblade was great, so my opinion might not help you there, but I think Ni no Kuni is much better so far. I am maybe 10 hours in? It's delightful.
