The only thing that screws up this whole perception of Retro being a likely candidate, is that they went on record saying we're making something "everyone wants us to do." I know they could've been playing coy, because no matter what not everyone wants them to do the same franchise...But at the time, everyone was screaming Star Fox at the top of their lungs, along with Zelda and Metroid.

No they didn't. That was Paul Gale bullshit.

Honestly, this should be stickied to the top of the forum by this point, because I've seen so many people cite it, and it really is based on nothing.

I actually wouldn't be too surpirsed if Retro now had two teams, one making platformers, one doing darker stuff. Imo the ideal solution would be if one team was doing Metroid Prime 4 and one was doing Yoshis Land Wii U. Starfox could be handled better elsewhere, I'd prefer a more Arcade-oriented studio to do that (like treasure for example). Retro is great in creating diverse and secret-filled worlds, exactly what a more adventure-oriented platformer or a new Metroid game needs. We've yet to see them excell at arcady stuff.

Original source:

I spoke with two different people at the Austin, Texas based first party developer for Nintendo to see if I could get any more information on the “Wii 2″ which many are calling Project Cafe.

According to them, what they’re working on for Wii’s successor is 'a project everyone wants us to do'.

It was NEVER said by Retro. Paul Gale says Retro said it...but we don't know for sure.

Gonna fan fiction for a moment here but it would be amazing if we got Yoshi's Land, Metroid Prime 4, and DKCR 2 in that order with their two teams (assuming this is true) alternating releases.

Maybe the Prime team could then recycle some ideas for the Zelda game as a Starfox Adventures 2 ;). Such a team structure could really help Nintendo in getting back some of the balance in their software portfolio they lost by selling Rare.

Where's this idea that Retro has 2 teams coming from? I don't see how such a thing would be possible unless there's a small team working on some sort of handheld title.

I don't know, but with the staff they have I would be very surprised if they had enough people to even do a handheld title.

If there ever were a game that would make me go out and buy a Wii U the minute it comes out, it would be Yoshi's Island!! Dis gonna be good <3

It depends on how the babies are used, in my opinion.

But honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing the lil Yoshi tykes from Yoshi's Story getting some more play. Either utilizing a perfected/refined version of the Yoshi Island-style mechanics or possibly doing something a bit different.

Baby Mario and/or Luigi should be in there somewhere. Under the circumstances that this is a 2D platformer, you better bet there will be multiplayer of some kind and that each Yoshi will have its own baby.

It certainly could be good, but the odds of it are not exactly great; that's one of the things that I really didn't like about Yoshi's Island DS, was that it didn't have enough guts to try and be another Yoshi's Story. Yoshi's Island was good in part because it was fresh and innovative, and just adding onto it goes against everything it did to set itself apart. That's why I think YS gets a bit of a bum-wrap. It was flawed in a lot of ways, but it certainly wasn't a bad game. The nonlinear style of level, as well as nonlinear progress, were interesting, and the latter allowed players to complete the game quickly, but still have something to go back for.

Basically, give me this in 720 minus Luigi & Mario and you have a sale.

1) Retro having "two teams" is not based on any actual grounding. If they are developing an HD FPS / FPA of any sort. That's probably the entire staff right there.

2) An FPS Metroid and a Donkey Kong Country made sense to assign to a western developer. Explain to me how a Yoshi's Island makese sense for a Western developer except for fanbaby dreams.

It's just weird that any rumored theoretical game, becomes a "omg retro could making this". Despite the numerous developers working under Nintendo, and the more logical Japanese ones. Yikes!

That's easy and had you read my texts before you would've seen this already. Because of
a) Yoshi's history of being more exploration based compared to Mario and the likes
b) The gaping whole in Nintendo's platformer line-up that is "exploration based 3D platformers"
c) Yoshi's perfectly fitting move set for this sub-genre
d) The big number of 2D platformers in Nintendo's Line-Up
it makes a lot of sense for Yoshi's Land to be a 3D exploration-based platformer.

Now: If there is indeed a Yoshi's Land Wii U and if it indeed is a 3D exploration-based platformer, Retro as a developer makes a lot of sense because
a) Their last project was DKCR, so a new game announcement should be coming soon.
b) They excell at developing rich and broad levels, an absolute necessity to create a good exploration based 3D platformer
c) They already have experience in platforming due to DKCR

I definitely don't know if Retro has one or two teams, but afaik they were hiring a few people some months ago and they were working on several titles simultaneously in the past (though most got cancelled), so I guess it might be a good idea to have two teams. Considering the big difference between Metroid Prime an DKCR in style, both gameplay and visual, Nintendo could very well also think so and have split the studio in two teams. Remember, one team might mainly consist of planners an designers for the time being and the tech guys change between these two teams accoring to the status of each project. But yes, this is purely speculative, but I have never said anything to indicate it was something else.

If it's Retro then you know it's gonna be great... but I'll still be disappointed. I think we all believe there are bigger things at Retro.

I'm still expecting them to become the major western studio that adopts most existing IPs. To inherit their namesake while Japan shifts its focus slightly by buying most of Japan. lol

I second the "no babies" request. I hope they let Yoshi do his thing solo or with other Yoshis, not babysitting the Mario toddlers.

Do want so badly. Preferrably with hand drawn visuals. How'd this get leaked on Miiverse anyways?

What/who is this from?

Iwata Asks for Paper Mario Sticker Star.

Darn it you guys, now I'm gonna be disappointed when the old school world premiere at the VGA's won't be Yoshi's Land. :(

But has Nintendo ever had a world premiere at VGAs? On top of that - was there ever a reveal for a japanese developed game at VGAs?

It could mean nothing, it could mean the ninjas got to them. Nevertheless, I still think this game is coming, if I'm not playing it (or saving up nickels and dimes for it) this time next year, I will eat several helpings of crow.

I would say it definitely means *something*, but unfortunately it's impossible to infer what, since either being fake or an unannounced game would be impetus for Nintendo to have the listing removed.

Does Nintendo usually care about fake announcements, though?

Then again, you'd think the safer approach would be to just "not comment on rumors and speculation".

Publicly, they would say that, but behind the scenes, they probably wouldn't want two reputable retailers to be taking pre-orders and building hype for a game that doesn't exist.

Even so...it's now been like what, a week later?

Whatever message they may have wanted to send, the ninjas were a bit slower than I expected.

The same could be said for the other possibility though (it being an unannounced real thing) :p

But you're right, it's entirely possible Nintendo wasn't even involved in the decision at all. Future Shop and Best Buy could have taken them down of their own volition for whichever reason.

So we have another "hint" that can go in both direction. Considering there was a Nintendo Direct yesterday, I sadly don't see a chance of this being real, because why would Nintendo make a ND five days before they announce a new Wii U game?

I wouldn't question the ways of how Nintendo announces things.
Nintendo Directs are the best example of this. So unpredictable in date and content.

If Nintendo give me a 1080p 2D or 3D cel shaded Yoshi's Island that is progressive yet has platforming at its core with a minimum of gimmicks then I'll be the happiest Nintendo gamer ever!
