To be fair, they didn't exactly announce anything extraordinary for the next 6 months. They have 5 games out between now and September, one of which is an "expanded audience" title, so only four "real" games - Game and Wario, Lego City Undercover, Pikmin 3, and The Wonderful 101.
Not bad but still a let down. Even an announcement of Wii Sports U as part of the summer lineup would have helped matters.
Anyone wanna take a guess at the release schedule?
I'd say
March - Lego City Undercover
May - Wii Fit U
June - Pikmin 3
August - Game and Wario
September - The Wonderful 101

Upgrade from Wii VC versions: NES 100 yen ($1.00), SNES 150 yen ($1.50).
Might as well add in my realistic predictions:
- Formal Wii U Virtual Console announcement, upgrade your old VC titles to GamePad support for $1.99 each Turned out to be $1.50 and $2... pretty close I'd say
- Mention of GCN titles but no information yet Completely false, although GBA was mentioned instead
- Google Maps Street View release date No show
- Panoramic View release date No show
- Details on first major Wii U firmware update We got details on a Spring and a Summer update
- One somewhat major game reveal, something like Monolith or the rumored Yoshi game, not Retro/Mario U/Smash 4 We got both Monolith and Yoshi, and nothing for Retro/Mario U/Smash 4... so pretty spot on!
- An original first party Wii U eShop game announcement, think stuff like Pushmo/Harmoknight/Dillon's Rolling Western Nothing
- A quick reminder of previously announced games coming in Q2 Yup, plus a Wonderful 101 trailer
so, does this mean whatever you purchased on Wii VC can be carried over but you have to pay to "upgrade" them?
You forgot the new Wii Party game for this summer.
Yeah there are some decent games in March from third parties, but the closest thing Nintendo has to a "blockbuster AAA" release is Pikmin 3. New Super Mario Brox. U being out already does help matters a bit though.Monster Hunter weeps. Don't forget Rayman next month too.
I think Wario is done that is just me guessing out of my ass. I think they'll go with the stronger releases first (Wii Fit U, Pikmin 3) to increase the install base available for Game and Wario and Wonderful 101. Who knows though, I just think that Game and Wario is getting delayed for strategic reasons. Why do you think Pikmin 3 is farther along than Game and Wario? Is there evidence to suggest that? G&W looks significantly lower budget and there's not a lot out there to indicate how robust or deep of a title it is.
Nintendo Direct is really one of the best things Nintendo came up with PR-wise. They come out of nowhere, you don't know what to expect, sometimes they just inform, other times they blow you away and are a practise that's going to continue. And so far quite a lot of ND actually deliverd (hard).
They even might have a positive effect on future Nintendo E3 presentations. All that boring and uninteresting stuff sometimes could (partly) be outsourced to the Nintendo Directs and therefore make more room for the highlights.
Right now, NDs are better than E3 presentations to me.
You know when I spent some time away from gaf and didn't have to deal with the incessant Nintendo is doomed crowd or the ridiculous hyperbole crowd I can actually be very happy about all the announcements. I'm there day 1 for Wind Waker(looks gorgeous) and X(just beautiful can't wait to explore this world).
The fanboys and haters can make it difficult to enjoy anything around here sometimes.
agreed, but I wouldn't get used to NDs like todays. this is clearly panic mode Nintendo
Went back and checked my predictions to the reality. Fairly accurate surprisingly.
Congratulations. You should be recieving a check in the mail shortly.Oh wow, one of my Miiverse posts was in the direct. I'm Freeman rooting for the Crimson Tide during the TVii segment of the NOA stream. Cool.

Well, looks like I'm going to have to buy a Wii U now. I hope all of that shit carries over to NoA. And I mean ALL OF IT.

Congrats
IndeedHa Ha, I saw that actually (I think). I assume it said something with 'Bama'? The Bama part stuck out in my mind
It just caught me off-guard.. I always just assumed they showed their own in-house mock-ups of Miiverse.Same here! I'm honored to be featured in the best Nintendo Direct so far
This was better than their E3 showing, I'm not sure what else people expect out if Nintendo? Wii U now has the strongest upcoming 1st party lineup of any game platform rather easily.
LEGO City Undercover (TT Fusion)
Game & Wario (SPD/Intelligent Systems)
Wii Fit U (EAD)
Pikmin 3 (EAD)

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem (Atlus/Intelligent Systems)
Super Mario (EAD Tokyo)
Mario Kart (EAD)
Super Smash Bros. (Sora/Namco)
The Legend of Zelda (EAD)
TBA title (Retro Studios)
It was a huge letdown according to Edge magazine. Why can't all those games announced be released tomorrow? Just more future broken promises by Nintendo
Well when you break down an entire article to a couple of dumb sentences it can make any outlet less credible.Wow. And I thought Edge was meant to be one of the more credible outlets.
Yes they are.Is Monolith Soft a Nintendo 1st party developer? And if not, they need to remedy that immediately.
Yep. In fact, I'd say that the 1/23 Nintendo Direct was comparable to Nintendo's E3 2010. Everyone had ridiculously high expectations for it and Nintendo STILL surprised them.
You can potentially add to that list:
TBA title (Monster Games) (rumored to be Diddy Kong Racing 2)
TBA title (Nintendo SPD) (perhaps a 2D Metroid?)
Probably some kind of Kirby game from HAL Laboratory
Probably some kind of Fire Emblem / Advance Wars / Battalion Wars game from Intelligent Systems
"New, original IP" by Miyamoto
"More 3rd-party collaborations" (Nintendo is funding more outsourced titles)

September - The Wonderful 101
If Wonderful 101 isn't out until September, someone at Nintendo deserves to be slapped. Nintendo has such a history of announcing fake release dates, just to string people along. With almost every new console they announce dates that they know are not going to be met, and then shortly after the launch announce that said games unfortunately won't make the launch window.

See I'm not compeletely sure that this release dates are ever intentionally made up, or the fact that Nintendo's games are some of the most polished in the industry.

Nintendo stated that launch window was all the way up until March 2013. You don't believe its possible that it got delayed a few months?Games do not get delayed by nearly a year unless there is some major rework done. In other words, if Nintendo and Platinum Games believed Wonderful 101 was going to be a launch title, or even shortly after launch, as of late 2012, they would only believe that because the game was nearly finished.
So, unless we hear of a major overhaul of Wonderful 101 a 10 month delay is bullshit. It was never going to be done at or around launch time.
There is also a motive involved. Nintendo knows their first year lineup is incredibly sparse, so surely they'd like to stretch what they have out. It's all strategic.
Announce fake release dates - strategic in that it gets people excited to run out and pre-order/buy the system day one.
Announce delays, and sometimes multiple delays - drip out the games you have to fill out the first year.

They have a third party ND coming soon as well.
Sooo can we expect Majora's Mask 3D to be unveiled in the next 3DS ND? I feel like they wouldn't just skip over it and go to Wind Waker, I'm almost certain Grezzo is working on it and they said they have more on the 3DS later.
