Wii U Direct Nintendo Games 2013.1.23 - Jan. 23rd, 9 AM EST, 2 PM GMT, 11 PM JP

To be fair, they didn't exactly announce anything extraordinary for the next 6 months. They have 5 games out between now and September, one of which is an "expanded audience" title, so only four "real" games - Game and Wario, Lego City Undercover, Pikmin 3, and The Wonderful 101.

Not bad but still a let down. Even an announcement of Wii Sports U as part of the summer lineup would have helped matters.

Anyone wanna take a guess at the release schedule?

I'd say

March - Lego City Undercover
May - Wii Fit U
June - Pikmin 3
August - Game and Wario
September - The Wonderful 101

You forgot the new Wii Party game for this summer.

EvilMario

Will QA for food.

Monster Hunter weeps. Don't forget Rayman next month too. A sparse line up to be sure, but enough reasons for me to own the console.
MonHan is the only reason I need though

Why do you think Pikmin 3 is farther along than Game and Wario? Is there evidence to suggest that? G&W looks significantly lower budget and there's not a lot out there to indicate how robust or deep of a title it is.

Might as well add in my realistic predictions:

  • Formal Wii U Virtual Console announcement, upgrade your old VC titles to GamePad support for $1.99 each Turned out to be $1.50 and $2... pretty close I'd say
  • Mention of GCN titles but no information yet Completely false, although GBA was mentioned instead
  • Google Maps Street View release date No show
  • Panoramic View release date No show
  • Details on first major Wii U firmware update We got details on a Spring and a Summer update
  • One somewhat major game reveal, something like Monolith or the rumored Yoshi game, not Retro/Mario U/Smash 4 We got both Monolith and Yoshi, and nothing for Retro/Mario U/Smash 4... so pretty spot on!
  • An original first party Wii U eShop game announcement, think stuff like Pushmo/Harmoknight/Dillon's Rolling Western Nothing
  • A quick reminder of previously announced games coming in Q2 Yup, plus a Wonderful 101 trailer

Went back and checked my predictions to the reality. Fairly accurate surprisingly.

Nintendo Direct is really one of the best things Nintendo came up with PR-wise. They come out of nowhere, you don't know what to expect, sometimes they just inform, other times they blow you away and are a practise that's going to continue. And so far quite a lot of ND actually deliverd (hard).

They even might have a positive effect on future Nintendo E3 presentations. All that boring and uninteresting stuff sometimes could (partly) be outsourced to the Nintendo Directs and therefore make more room for the highlights.

Right now, NDs are better than E3 presentations to me.

Woops, I completely missed that.

That actually does make things slightly better. Maybe they'll shoot for Game and Wario in April or May then and Wii U Party for July or August since I doubt they want to release two minigame collections too close to one another.

Monster Hunter weeps. Don't forget Rayman next month too.
Yeah there are some decent games in March from third parties, but the closest thing Nintendo has to a "blockbuster AAA" release is Pikmin 3. New Super Mario Brox. U being out already does help matters a bit though.

I think Wario is done that is just me guessing out of my ass. I think they'll go with the stronger releases first (Wii Fit U, Pikmin 3) to increase the install base available for Game and Wario and Wonderful 101. Who knows though, I just think that Game and Wario is getting delayed for strategic reasons.

agreed, but I wouldn't get used to NDs like todays. this is clearly panic mode Nintendo

You know when I spent some time away from gaf and didn't have to deal with the incessant Nintendo is doomed crowd or the ridiculous hyperbole crowd I can actually be very happy about all the announcements. I'm there day 1 for Wind Waker(looks gorgeous) and X(just beautiful can't wait to explore this world).

The fanboys and haters can make it difficult to enjoy anything around here sometimes.

The insanity of the internet and the incessant flood of console (and operating system) warriors It definitely skews your perspective. Especially since there's a certain prolific brand of anal web denizen who can only see things in black & white. Doomed or winning. It's never enough that there are more good games than anybody could ever play on all these platforms, from Vita to Android. I honestly don't think I'll need anything outside the U's launch lineup until next fall, never mind my backlog on other systems.

Yes, that's right. And I won't. I'll just be happy to get new information now and then and be open for any surprise they might have for me. If they do a ND every 2 month or 1,5 month, I'd be more than happy.

Oh wow, one of my Miiverse posts was in the direct. I'm Freeman rooting for the Crimson Tide during the TVii segment of the NOA stream. Cool.

I'd say flip Wii Fit and Pikmin, and Wonderful 101 & Wario both hit in August. I think I recall Advance Wars and Nintendogs both hitting in the August of the DS' first year.

Well, looks like I'm going to have to buy a Wii U now. I hope all of that shit carries over to NoA. And I mean ALL OF IT.

I want a Nintendo Direct just for Animal Crossing 3ds release date

And this release date better be real close

And i want a big celebration on it. Iwata dressed as carmem miranda to start

Congratulations. You should be recieving a check in the mail shortly.

Damned Terms and conditions, lol

Ha Ha, I saw that actually (I think). I assume it said something with 'Bama'? The Bama part stuck out in my mind :)
Indeed

Same here! I'm honored to be featured in the best Nintendo Direct so far :p
It just caught me off-guard.. I always just assumed they showed their own in-house mock-ups of Miiverse.

I was at work when it was live, but i read back through this thread... LOL @ the rollercoaster.

This was better than their E3 showing, I'm not sure what else people expect out if Nintendo? Wii U now has the strongest upcoming 1st party lineup of any game platform rather easily.

LEGO City Undercover (TT Fusion)
Game & Wario (SPD/Intelligent Systems)
Wii Fit U (EAD)
Pikmin 3 (EAD)
The Wonderful 101 (Platinum)

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem (Atlus/Intelligent Systems)
Super Mario (EAD Tokyo)

Yep. In fact, I'd say that the 1/23 Nintendo Direct was comparable to Nintendo's E3 2010. Everyone had ridiculously high expectations for it and Nintendo STILL surprised them.

You can potentially add to that list:

TBA title (Monster Games) (rumored to be Diddy Kong Racing 2)
TBA title (Nintendo SPD) (perhaps a 2D Metroid?)
Probably some kind of Kirby game from HAL Laboratory
Probably some kind of Fire Emblem / Advance Wars / Battalion Wars game from Intelligent Systems
"New, original IP" by Miyamoto
"More 3rd-party collaborations" (Nintendo is funding more outsourced titles)

I'm still able to transfer my Wii VC games to my WiiU thru a system transfer right? and play those in Wii mode?

If i want gamepad & miiverse support, I pay a dollar?

where is this dkr 2 rumour coming from?

Sooo can we expect Majora's Mask 3D to be unveiled in the next 3DS ND? I feel like they wouldn't just skip over it and go to Wind Waker, I'm almost certain Grezzo is working on it and they said they have more on the 3DS later.

I'm actually quite surprised at the amount of negativity that has spawned in some threads. I thought this Direct was really phenomenal even though a lot of the titles have a lot further to go. I've been very cynical for most things concerning Wii U, but I feel they clearly have surprises left and obviously wouldn't show all their cards now. At the least for me they've shown a lot more than I had expected to be even remotely interested in. I wasn't even particularly a fan of E3 2010, but this pretty much secures the next E3 will be my favorite Nintendo E3 in a very long time. I assume some of the titles won't appear again at E3, but still... Playable 3D Mario + Mario Kart is great for me as I got the most mileage out of those titles on the Wii for various reasons so I'm very excited to see those. SMT x FE is great considering they're two of my most favorite franchises and I'd be very surprised if it doesn't turn out to be one of my favorite games of the next generation. X looks great and Wind Waker is the perfect choice for a remake which to me looks great also. At the least it's made me very optimistic for the future.. especially considering I've never at any point in the Wii's life-cycle had interest in so many titles at once. So it's great seeing this early on... W101, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3 in addition to those pretty much ensure me buying a Wii U in the next year or two.

Since they're gonna release Wind Waker HD, what other GCN titles will they release in HD? Iwata did explain one of the big reasons was due to the GCN install base being small and many may have missed out on it. I doubt Sunshine will be released in HD due it being received with mixed reception. Maybe they will release F-Zero GX HD?

Even without the direct's surprises (Yoshi Yarn, Wind Waker HD, and SMT x FE), Nintendo's platform will always have a strong first party lineup, no? I mean Iwata announcing that "We're making a 3D Mario, Mario Kart, and Zelda for the Wii U now!" is "well, duh". I just hope Wii U will get support from third party multiplatform releases, just to make sure that it's a healthy platform for customers to invest on.

September - The Wonderful 101

If Wonderful 101 isn't out until September, someone at Nintendo deserves to be slapped. Nintendo has such a history of announcing fake release dates, just to string people along. With almost every new console they announce dates that they know are not going to be met, and then shortly after the launch announce that said games unfortunately won't make the launch window.

See I'm not compeletely sure that this release dates are ever intentionally made up, or the fact that Nintendo's games are some of the most polished in the industry.

It was a huge letdown according to Edge magazine. Why can't all those games announced be released tomorrow? Just more future broken promises by Nintendo

Ha, Chris Kohler went even further and was calling games like Mario Kart WiiU that will be playable at E3 "vaporware". To be fair i don't think he understands what the word means. Either that or trolling.

Games do not get delayed by nearly a year unless there is some major rework done. In other words, if Nintendo and Platinum Games believed Wonderful 101 was going to be a launch title, or even shortly after launch, as of late 2012, they would only believe that because the game was nearly finished.

So, unless we hear of a major overhaul of Wonderful 101 a 10 month delay is bullshit. It was never going to be done at or around launch time.

There is also a motive involved. Nintendo knows their first year lineup is incredibly sparse, so surely they'd like to stretch what they have out. It's all strategic.

Announce fake release dates - strategic in that it gets people excited to run out and pre-order/buy the system day one.

Announce delays, and sometimes multiple delays - drip out the games you have to fill out the first year.

Do you have any evidence of this?

Edit: So, no.

Nintendo stated that launch window was all the way up until March 2013. You don't believe its possible that it got delayed a few months?

The launch window was always until March. It probably only got delayed a few months. The only time I can agree Nintendo purposely lied about a game was Kid Icarus which got delayed over a year and was nowhere near launch. You do realize games are a complicated process. Just take a look at Bioshock Infinite delay problems. Combine that with Nintendo finally moving on to modern hardware for the first time in a long time and you end up with delays.

I think Nintendo said they would put out an original Zelda for 3DS before any more remakes, and in addition the title they were most interested in revisiting on the 3DS was A Link to the Past. I wouldn't get my hopes up about Majora's Mask any time soon, to be honest.

This is preposterous. The game was announced at the start of June 2012, with a release window of "within three months of launch", or up to about February 2013. That means they were expecting about 8 months more development time. Eight months is a huge amount of time in game development terms, and more than enough for Nintendo to have encountered issues that required extra development time. We also don't know how far back it's been pushed. It could be released in March for all we know.

Perhaps more puzzlingly, you're completely ignoring Nintendo's long history of delayed games. Nintendo are one of the few publishers who delay games for the right reasons, and many of their best games, like Ocarina of Time and Mario Galaxy, wouldn't have been nearly as good if they'd been rushed to completion in their original schedules. At the same time they've avoided the kind of feature-creep plagued development disasters like Daikatana and Duke Nukem Forever.

I just realized that the Wii U's fal 2013 could be a repeat of the 3DS's fall 2011: 3D Mario, Mario Kart, and a Zelda remake.
