I still find it amusing that people criticise the Wii U for its launch, when it shipped and sold more consoles than Microsoft and Sony did during their last launches. Hell, it wasn't that much worse than the Wii's launch

Where were the complaints about them not giving a good environment for third parties?

People are so expectant for consoles to sell 10 million units off the bat and everything to just shower down instantly. That's not how it works and if you think so, you'll be in for a surprise come the launch of Microsoft and Sony's next consoles
Wii U is not competing with the 360 and PS3 launches, its competing with them now. What happened with the other launches is irrelevant....the price, the lack of games and the power of the console puts it at a disadvantage against the competition competition today.

Nintendo screwed up again, but no one should be surprised.

Except they're not even remotely the same. He didn't tease. And this is incredibly interesting if you have a dispassionate view on the subject. Nintendo losing exclusivity to a game that's been their demo showcase since before launch is certainly an interesting development. It's not a good development, but it certainly interesting in that it speaks volumes about the current state of Wii U.

"bitter"?

I have a Wii U, and love platformers, and I view it as fairly bad news but not much more then that. Were people frothing at the mouth to play this?

Heh, what else are people gonna play on the system? There's hasn't really been a release in a long time. I was hoping that at least we'd have a new game to play before Monster Hunter and LEGO City comes out. Now we're stuck waiting another month without much to play. Unless you want to count the Fist of the North Star as good quality software....

Some of us were. The first game was one of the best 2D platformers of the generation.

Eh, maybe it's because I've just come off NSMB2 & NSMBU in quick order. Kinda had my fill of platformers for a while.

Oh I agree it's a blow for the platform, but heater seemed to be talking about the game in and of itself more, unless I misunderstood.

He is correct, you are wrong. It's very interesting news. It's not "OMG HYPE!". It's "Interesting". It is interesting to see how Ubisoft delayed the game to port it over to PS3/360, is it not?!

Some of you are either bitter about the delay or just love to piss on someone's parade. He's not an asshole for delivering the news, neither does he control the release dates or the ports or let-downs. He provides news and that's what he did. Be mad at Ubisoft, not Rich.

schuelma

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
3rd Parties act like clueless babies in regards to Nintendo-platforms.

Nintendo is stuck in a situation with no way out- release no 1st party games and 3rd parties complain that Nintendo isn't building a userbase. Release big 1st party games and 3rd parties complain that they cannot compete with Nintendo.

It would have been, but at least it would have come out of nowhere with no real buildup. Instead he built the whole thing up, and slammed it down on folks. He should have simply kept his mouth shut. The news would have still been a disappointment, but with less "I'm rubbing it in your face" before hand.
If you look at his tweets, and only his tweets, they are actually fairly sensible.

All "hype", "buildup", "slamdown", this "rubbing in people's faces"... is imagined.

edit: and you know you should check yourself when you have me defending some IGN guy

I honestly don't understand why people are calling Rich a dick. It's your own damn fault for getting hyped up on "interesting" news.

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't relate "interesting" to "good" or even "exciting" news. "Interesting" implies neither of those adjectives.

Previous "interesting" news by Rich proved to be positive news. Thus, using the same word and similar sentence structure would imply the same vibe: positive.

The way he quickly goes to defend himself, after knowing all along it would piss people off, is what makes him an asshole.

Just the word selection or choice of his defense is the reason people are calling him a dick.

Yeah, its ridiculous.

So if I tell you "Expect news tomorrow", do you really think it'll always be positive? His word selection is "interesting" not "exciting". Stop being so rude towards him; he is doing his job and providing info before anyone else.

It was "interesting", but total crap. What the hell did he expect to happen? He should have simply kept his mouth shut and let things go where they may. What gets me is that as soon as he put up that Ubisoft article, he puts up another doom and gloom article. It's just not cool at all.

So he should only report good news and articles that have a purely positive spin? Got it.

smh

Well, I think their only option for Western third party support is basically trying to take Microsoft and Sony head on both in console hardware and the types of games they make (Halo, Uncharted, GT), but that completely doesn't fit with their business or skillset respectively.

I mostly agree with you. I do find Ubisoft's decisions here to be 'interesting'. However, I don't think this is the type of thing I would tease, if only because he should know better what people are going to expect from the tease.

Fair enough. Personally, I can't get enough of the genre. Wish there were some more 3D ones, though.

I blame Nintendo for failing to create a platform on which a third party exclusive can meet success.

I'm struggling to equate this news to the Zombi-U-bundle-in-the-US news. If Zombi U was unsuccessful, what's enticing about including it in a bundle? If it was a success, what's the frame of reference Ubi are using for the 'can't be successful on Wii U'?

I suspect in this instance it's rather more likely that they realised they needed a further seven months of development - and while they felt they could make a profit on that initial budget, didn't think that the extra seven months' dev time and the budgetary increase to cover that would result in a profitable venture on Wii U's userbase.

Now, to be fair to Ubisoft, this does ultimately mean they're throwing more money behind the game, which is no bad thing (and - in the end - beneficial to the Wii U audience as well). But it does also perhaps suggest that even a Rayman game is unable to control budgets sensibly.

This is very interesting and Wii U related. This was hyped as one of the console's major exclusives and was heavily promoted prior to launch. In fact I recall this was one of the first game trailers. In addition, this game was done and ready to go apparently, possibly could've even been a launch title; it was certainly top of my list along with Scribblenauts which still hasn't been released either.

I can only assume this is a reaction to the lukewarm reception the Wii U has had so far. There was every possibility of the game being a sales flop if they released now; Nintendo need to sell more units.

That's ridiculous. The lack of power is at question. Comparing to current sales of established consoles is also ridiculous. They are typically sold at discounts due to the fact that they are now relatively cheap.

You compare launches with launches, not with how the current gen consoles are doing

The guy runs Nintendo IGN. He used the same wording as another tease that led to surprising, good news for Nintendo fans. He isn't stupid, he knew exactly what he was doing and knew we would expect good news, not a six month delay to a highly anticipated exclusive + going multiplatform.

No you are wrong. Given the context it was a dick move, and I don't mean that it was bad news, as I said I don't care about this game, I mean his reaction to the people that expected positive news. Why not? His interesting 3DS related news was actual 3DS specific news.

His interesting Wii U related news was that this is coming to 360/PS3 and getting delayed.

Rich knew what he was doing, doesn't need a white knights to his rescue.

It's not imagined. He knew what he was doing. What the hell did he think was gonna happen? If he didn't want that kind of backlash he would have chosen his words better. All he was doing is fishing for hits and getting people worked up.

Personally, I'm finding this hilarious but I can see why Wii U owners would be pissed off at this move.

It is a pretty dickish thing to do after all.

I honestly think Nintendo has painted themselves into a corner through their own marketing/image. Shame.

Boy am I glad I wasn't hyped for this. It's a nice setup on that Rich guys' part, though: get people into a positive mood and then strike them down cruelly for extra tears.

Anyway. That's a surprisingly dickish move on Ubis part. I mean, some of us at least suspected Legends would get ported to other platforms eventually - after all, it's Ubisoft, and when there's money to be made, why not.

Still, delaying the game on the severely game-starved WiiU for more than half a year and on top of that aiming for a same-day release on competitors' consoles just cannot be taken as a good sign. Plus, they're releasing the game right into the suspected launch window of their successors. The 720/PS4 hype machine will be at full throttle around that time. Nintendo probably will be going at it too, releasing or hyping their heavy hitters. Just what is going on here.

Did a newbie accidentally upload hello_world.c to the repository, overwriting all their files? Was the Wii U version too buggy to release now? I just cannot fathom why they would do this right now - or at least the way they're doing it.

Can't imagine Nintendo is thrilled about all of this either.

Disappointing, the delay more than anything; I very likely would have bought it on release, but it's very much a low-tier, "wait a month or two and get it for a fiver if ever" situation given the comparatively busy market as the year begins to draw down. It's certainly not a priority with GTA V and, in all likelihood, some of Nintendo's best franchises getting new instalments soon after.

Well, I think their only option for Western third party support is basically trying to take Microsoft and Sony head on both in console hardware and the types of games they make (Halo, Uncharted, GT), but that completely doesn't fit with their business or skillset respectively.

That's a complete dead end.

I don't think it's the interesting news bit on its own that irks people. Maybe when coupled with Wii U it then generates hype/hope/expectation etc.

I find the lack off Xbox/PS3 comment baffling.
Shouldn't the title have been interesting news for Wii U, PS3 and Xbox coming tomorrow?

Surely this is just as interesting to Xbox/PS3 owners too? I suppose just mentioning Wii U generates more clicks/Hyoe at the moment.
He's just using selective journalism in his pre amble.

Welp. I guess he shouldn't post anything.

Some of you don't make sense, but it doesn't matter. The day I had to defend IGN is the day I never thought I'll see unless it was 2001.

You are wrong.
He should have said "Interesting PS3/360-related news coming".

Nope. It's more WiiU relevant than PS3/360. Port was hinted at and PS3/360 was going to see it sooner or later. The delay for WiiU is what makes this an interesting WiiU news.

What Nintendo is doing with this machine? It's a 5 year old piece of technology sitting on the shelves and not even themselves care to release anything about it. How can they not have foreseen this lack of quality releases? idek
