34,000 pieces of Wii U software were sold in the UK in January (incl. NintyLand)

Yes, graphics + next-gen games from 3rd parties.

Will that seriously be enough for the UK market? I'm not too sure. Games? Sure. But even the Wii U will have games. I mean by virtue, Vita should be outselling 3DS then too, no? Much superior hardware and graphics.

Likewise the PS4 and 720, or is that automatically different? Let me guess, graphics?

The PS1 and PS2 may have been the weaker of their generations but they were by no means weak compared to the previous.

The Wii is an exception, the casual crowd ate it up. That same casual crowd is long gone.

Aside from the tablet aspect the WiiU is a PS360.

Nope. It had the best exclusives last gen and a lot of great third party games that everyone ignored.

That all looked crappy on a hi def tv due to the low rez output.

But your right about the games. I'm playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 via Dolphin at 1080p with anti-aliasing and it looks lush and it's an amazing game. Better then any WiiU launch title.

Which brings me back to WiiU. Is this the most disastrous Nintendo console launch of all time. Surely Nintendo will enter panic mode soon.

Don't blame the UK, blame Nintendo for doing a crummy job.

I can only speak for Belgium but the thing might as well be nonexistent here.

As a fellow Belgian, I think our country has always been more of a PlayStation country than anything, although the Wii was kinda popular.

Sadly it probably is - younger generation in particular can be really fickle. The PS3/360 had CoD, GTA, AC, so they're automatically set on assuming the PS4/720 is going to deliver the same thing BUT WID BETER GRAFX, BRUV.

DS was a petty bad launch too, no? Mario 64 being the killed title or a while.

Awesome post! Online sales aren't included in this right? So if we factor in the rapid increase in that area, the numbers would even look better for the HD twins.

It doesn't include digital sales, so with XBL and PSN full retail game sales the 3.5% decline would be even smaller.

It sold better than Virtual Boy ;)

EA are bound to stick it on Wii U if it reaches a certain market share of console. Those are the terms of their licence.
At what point do EA have to make such decisions? I.e. while in theory the Wii U has until Sept/Oct to gain an installed base - development is presumably well underway for FIFA 14. Do you know what kind of marketshare justifies a port?

Looking at typical post-holiday drops I actually overestimated my guestimate of weekly sales - if it's fallen along the lines of normal drops it would be in the 10K a week for Europe area. I guess even at such low sales it would still reach a 700K+ installed base in Europe by FIFA 14's release.

Sad to hear really but the UK market has been bombing for ages. Maybe the public see the Wii-U as a transition thing and they are waiting to at least hear/see what MS and Sony do.

While a price drop would be a great idea, it may seem like a Nintendo panic thing and could weaken the consumer view of the product. At this point there is nothing on the console that will make me buy it, even if I love me some Monster Hunter. :D

Perhaps I'm generalising too much, but the UK has never really been massively big on quirky properties which come from outside of our own institutions. There's no real nostalgia here for stuff like Sonic and Mario here beyond gaming circles. Not like Wallace and Grommit which is pervasive throughout English culture and demographics. Where as countries like France and Italy have a genuine nostalgia for classic anime characters for example.

The flack Nintendo's getting now will be nothing compared to after E3, or during holiday this year. By then, we'll actually know/see what the PS4 and next Xbox are capable of, and the Wii U will look like even more of a joke.

Right now they're getting notice because nothing else is really going on. 10 months from now, they're going to be a little voice in the background going "Hey guys!....guys....guys?"

What the fuck are people playing in the UK right now?

I have a high-end PC with an 80 game backlog to go through. As Durante said, PC game sales at retail alone were almost as high as all handheld game sales combined.

Also, they're probably not into the rather lacklustre initial offerings for the WiiU.

I don't know. I just know that FIFA didn't like EA playing politics with the FIFpro licence last time with PS2/Dreamcast so they put the clause in when they renewed the licence. It might not meet the market share requirements tbh, and since EA/FIFA could count Wii U in the current generation it might never reach the requirement. If it considered next gen then FIFA 14 next gen should be in development right now along with the PS4/NXTBX version.

Apart from the Wii, Nintendo was never massively popular in the UK. Even the Master System out sold the NES. And the Mega Drive outsold the SNES. The Gameube and N64 were not very popular. You don't get die-hard Nintendo fans here, who always buy a Nintendo console without question, like you have in the US and other territories.

Well there are rumors that launch shipment to Poland was either 30 or 200 Wii Us...

Wow that's... yeah.

For sure (like most of Europe I'd guess), although the 360 has made some strides compared to the OG Xbox.
Wii was popular but more with the casual non-gamer where they'd take it out when they have people over and then it'd just sit there the rest of the year. None of these people were committed to the Wii though with Wii U's non-relevance as a result.

Just another terribly planned launch.

Remember when the rumors hit that they were originally targeting Christmas 2011? But then it just got pushed back... and back... until Christmas 2012. You have to wonder what they were doing. They sure weren't releasing Wii games.

At £99, I would big it just to play Luigi's Mansion Ghost Hunt, as that's the only killer app the system has right now.

But it isn't £99, so I wont be.

But seriously, for a company that swears blue "its all about the games", they sure are acting like they don't realise you need games to sell a system. Either you have the next genuine gamechanger like Mario 64, Halo or Wii Sports, or you launch with 5 high quality exclusives minimum.

I think it's poor advertising. I remember when Gear of War came out and pretty much every page of the Metro newspaper had a Microsoft ad in it and there was that epic TV commercial. I don't watch much tv nowadays but I never see bus or newsapaper ads for WiiU either.

You can barley pick up a PS3/360 for that much, factoring in a game and the controller, wut?

They were trying to catch up HD development. They already said they are still having some difficulties.

terrible sales all over.

UK is a very weak market now

Generation fatigue and people being way more careful with there money. New consoles are needed stat, wii u was a fucking mess of a launch it looked like a current gen system with a touch screen. The ads have totally vanished from tv i cant remember the last wii u ad i saw.

Interesting. If the "gen 3" v. "gen 4" categorisation is anything to go by then it may be that they consider it part of the current market.

No FIFA would essentially be the nail in the European coffin.

As a Nintendo fan: I loved the Wii, I love my 3DS, but the WiiU is one of Nintendo's most boring, derivative and outright unappealing pieces of hardware ever concieved. The lower tier technology of the Wii, with none of its innovations or fresh gaming experiences. Oh, look, a tablet! OMG I NEVER PLAYED WITH THESE *sigh* really Nintendo? Seriously?

Pretty much as it happend with the PS3, this is a console whose faults lies on its concept itself. Sofware and price will help as always, but there's no way that it can come on top on this generation. Back to the drawing board Ninty, this time come up with someting that I have never seen before. Oh, and lol @ all the "thou shall repent your sins and come back to traditional gaming" crowd. This is a piece of hardware as traditional and safe as the Gamecube was.

Fifa players will go for the best version. Least the vast majority will be. Nintendo has to sell it on their old software. Basically we are back to where Nintendo were before the Wii.

People claiming it's the UK being a poor market are seriously kidding themselves. I really do think the PS4/720 will sell pretty decently. Y'all need to realise the Wii's sales were a fad blip that will probably never be re-captured by any device that's not a tablet.

Anecdotal as it may be I know plenty of people who are excited about next-gen, I don't know a single person either owns a Wii-U or cares about it.

Nintendo fucked up big time not having an HD 3D Mario, SSB, Zelda, or Metroid game ready to go at the time of launch.

They should have had titles from all of their major IP's ready to go withing 6 months of launch, then they could have saved themselves.

As it looks now, these games will not be out for another year or more and 3rd party support virtually going to be non-existent they are in for tough times with this console.

Gamecube 2.0 indeed.
I loved my gamecube actually but still....

This is all Rayman's fault. If Rayman was coming out more people would have bought WiiUs and games. But Ubisoft just wants to see WiiU fail.

Where either of those games shown? No.

Plus 3D mario isn't a big hit with casual audience relatively speaking. The only thing left is mario kart and I can't see people buying a wiiu just for that like people did the wii.

Or the 3DS, or the DS...

Seriously?

Same here people i know cant wait for the next consoles, there is some serious generation fatigue for people they dragged this shite out about two years or so too much.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
So I did a few calculations with these figures.

Total sales Jan 2012 - 2778
Total sales Jan 2013 - 2111

Market decrease of 26%

Now let's look at the detail.

Nintendo vs non-Nintendo:

Total Nintendo platform sales in Jan 2012 - 999k
Total non-Nintendo platform sales in Jan 2012 - 1779k

Total Nintendo platform sales in Jan 2013 - 467k
Total non-Nintendo platform sales in Jan 2013 - 1644k

Nintendo YoY decrease - 53.3%
Non-Nintendo YoY decrease - 7.6%
Non-Nintendo YoY decrease consoles only - 3.5%

So, is it the UK market that's dead, or Nintendo that's dead in the UK?

I hope this myth that gaming is dead in the UK ceases to exist, it's Nintendo that are in serious decline. A new generation of consoles from Sony and MS would more than fix the current problems for their own decline.

People stating that the Wii U is doing better across Europe are mistaken... unless across Europe means France.

This is the percent of marketshare the Wii U had in each country last year:

France: 4.20%
UK: 3.08%
Germany: 3.08%
Netherlands: 2.24%
Belgium: 1.96%
Italy: 1.68%
Spain: 1.12%

In those terms the UK is the Wii U's joint second best market.

Couldnt do it earlier as I was on phone, but these figures almost need a sticky in every UK sales thread. I've been saying this shit for... probably half a year now if not more, but sweet vindication numbers are soul-soothing indeed. Thanks to their providers.

Not at all true if the games are good. People overestimate the impact of graphics on GAF.
