FYI the PC preload just went live on Steam. Downloading now. To the poster who said he didn't like the game and is not a huge Aliens fan I just don't get how you can expect to like this game if you aren't a fan of the film?

As long as its a good game, i will like it. Like, i don't like Bayonetta's style or theme but its a good game and i finished it twice. I didn't like the concept and the theme of Vanquish either but its probably the best TPS of this gen and i finisihed it 3 times. When it comes to Aliens, i wouldn't watch if a new Aliens movie comes out but i would play the game if i like it and i liked the AvP games which came out on PC . (the ones that came out in the 2002s or so from what i remember).

Because he wants a good game? For example you can appreciate Arkham Asylum without being a Batman fan.

I get ya. That being said I think this game is going to be 100% way more enjoyable for the fans than just someone casually walking in to play the game. As a huge fan of both the Alien films (even though they got worse as they went along, but I am in the minority that feels 3 was pretty good) I actually liked the marine campaign of the last AVP game.

To each their own. The previews have looked amazing to me.

I agree you can enjoy AA without being a Batman fan. That being said it is expodentially better if you are a fan. There are certain games that are geared towards fans of a character or movie that people who are not fans would fail to see why they are special.

Aliens Infestation is a perfect example. I just picked it up and the little details that make me smirk like the gun sounding just like the gun from the film, and teasing the scares of the Aliens appearing in the beginning of the game is a nod for the fans to the films.

AVP 2 was another perfect example of this. In the Marine campaign you walked around the opening area for a good 20-30 minutes before you ever see an Alien, but your motion sensor is going off when anything moves, so you are always freaking out, which again is pulled straight from the film.

EDIT:

http://www.pcauthority.com.au/Featu...ntinuing-the-fight-that-aliens-started.aspx/2

It’s difficult to avoid the reality that Aliens: Colonial Marines leans so heavily towards faithful fan service that it runs the risk of alienating casual fans and everyone else. If you are a fan, though, you can rest assured that Colonial Marines is in the very best of hands. Better still, you only have to wait until the 12th of February to play it.

This preview really conveys what I am trying to say.

Okay some notes, played for 10-15 minutes maybe:

-Install size is 2711
-106MB patch
-Graphics suck

Well, I always gave it the benefit of the doubt when seeing gameplay footage, but i always thought it looked really bad. They've been boasting their deferred rendering etc, but all i see is bland lighting effects, making it look like an old game. Even after seeing 720p direct footage i was hoping there was just something wrong with the stream quality or something, but i guess not. Strange for such an experienced studio.

Huge fan of Alien movies (except for resurection), but i'm not going to get this unless reviews are extatic.

Three must have been a point where they started again on this game after making considerable progress or something - weren't there really polished impressions/videos a few years back?

It is true then. I was worried when they streamed some of the PC game play. Made me realize that console versions will look like puke in a condom very quickly.

I will grab this once it hits below 10 euros for PS3.

Another Aliens game, DOA.

Yeah, I just dug out this game magazine from April 2008 which featured a preview of this game! There are screen shots which look really good, bullshots most likely.
Going by the preview the game seemed to be more tactical than what some of recent gameplay videos show.

-You are part of a four man squad. All squad mates have their own purpose. One is a medic, other guy weld doors shut and third guy can hack computers.

-You could command you squad mates not unlike in Brothers in Arms, like point at a door and a squaddie welds it shut.

-There are many points in the game where you can't beat the aliens and instead have flee and fortress yourself in some room. You have timer in which you have to make that room as secure as possible before the xenos attack, by placing sentries behind doors, welding the doors shut, blocking airducts, etc.

-Four player online coop, or 2 player splitscreen + 2 online.

-Weyland Yutani wants the aliens for research purposes so you'll be shooting human enemies too.

:(

Yeah I remember reading something similar in a GameInformer years back. The game has obviously gone through changes on more than one occasion.

Looks pretty good to me. Too many negative nancys in this thread.

Yeah, I thought it looked alright. Maybe not AAA but I never expected that to begin with. Certainly didn't look like the 3/10 everyone is describing in here.

Have played around 5 or 6 missions. Game is shockingly mediocre.

Goods
Music can be great.
Awesome sound effects, throwbacks to the film everywhere.
Environments are okay.

Bads
My god the game looks like a last gen PS2 fps with better lighting. Seriously, how is this possible at the end of a console generation?
Framerate is awful. On 360, runs around 20 fps ,most the time. Select areas it gets to 60.
SCREEN TEARING
Animations are bad, almost everywhere.
There's a nice mission where
you have no weapon
, it's pretty intense and scary. Other than that, there's really no tension.
Characters are all unlikeable thus far.
Pacing seems bad. First 30 minutes you kill maybe 50 Aliens and 100
Dudes

This all coming from a hardcore Aliens fan. It's literally my favorite film of all time. I'm enjoying the game, but thus far it's a 7/10. All single, gonna try coop/multi later.

edit:
speaking more about the characters, I'm reminded of the Redlettermedia Plinkett review of Star Wars Episode 1 when talking about the characters. Describe any of the A:CM characters without specifying their physical attributes or clothing. It's impossible. So far, the only thing I can say is there's
3 guys, 2 girls and Bishop.

Also, the E3 2011 demo seems to be completely gone. There's areas that resemble what I saw back in the day, but all those sequences are now different. No more, 'How many fingers am I holding up marine?" And the guy flips him off.

I kinda liked where they were going with that take of the follow up Aliens story. 'This Time It's War' didn't really fit the Aliens film as it was a survival film/personal story with Ripley...and it felt like Colonial Marines was going for that with a fuck load of dudes in a hanager fighting off hordes of aliens everywhere. They went with a much different
COPY THE MOVIE direction. Instead of a LOT of Marines, there's about 5 and a Bishop
. Dunno where the game will go from here, but we'll see.

So do we have any concrete data on Wii U release? Also, didn't Gearbox say that the Wii U version was going to be the best, do we have any evidence of that yet (specifically, have we seen the Wii U version and how it compares to the impressions from this thread)?

The dev did say it was the best looking version due to the newer tech. I don't believe them.

Considering how poor it runs on 360, I'm guessing the quote is in relation to using the WiiPad as a constant motion tracker instead of pressing LB all the time.

A:CM suffers from the same issues the console version of Borderlands 2 did, where textures just refuse to load sometimes. Sometimes 75% of the things you're looking at are fine, but things inbetween that fill the other 25% are a flat palette color. It's BAD. Like, game over man...game over.

Wow, this alone makes me not want to play this game ever. Who the fuck thought this was a good idea?

I guess that's what happens when you boil an interesting IP down to a dumb shooter: you need to desperately come up with enemy types because shooting stuff is all you do in the game. Instead, they should've went with the standard Aliens (+ Queen + Facehugger) and focussed on survival, exploration, narrative and suspense (by not throwing armies of Aliens at you that are merely cannon fodder).

I don't think I want to invest my time into these type of games anymore. I want more than a simple shooter nowadays.

I wonder if it was Sega or Gearbox who fucked this up more. Probably both :(

Remember back in early 2010 when Sega pushed back the release of Aliens so they could release AVP2010. Sega's statement at the time said they didn't want both titles to eat into the sales of one another. Now it just looks like Gearbox's game was in a worse state then Rebellions.

So how much of it is the game design, and how much of it is the console being 7 years old? Honestly being a PC gamer a lot of complaints I have heard don't worry me.

No, graphics do suck. Playing it on 360, and i think F.E.A.R had a more refined engine. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but they do suck.

I didn't hear people saying that shooters like Halo 4 or Killzone 2 looked like PS2 games.

My guess is that the mediocre presentation is mainly due to the overly long development.

For reference. Call of Duty looks better than Aliens on 360 and runs 60 fps.

Yeah I wouldn't put too much faith in that. Unless they actually put some effort in the Port, it's going to perform worse. Given how better hardware documentation hasn't been provided to 3rd parties till last fall, it's easy to see why many of the ports turned out the way they did.

In the end, I'm still in it for the Coop. I love coop games and if they manage the same /Gamepad/TV Coop like BLOPS2 did on WiiU, this game should be very much worth it for me.

Thanks for your impressions Max, this is a damn shame.

Wow, didn't know the game had combat againist humans. And certainly not to level described by LeMaximilian. Suppose what I'm wondering now is how is the combat against them? Do they use squad tactics like fear? The other big thing is how is the hit detection/animations, do they react when hit at all, have specific dismemberment(least important thing by far), etc?

Any plans to Yo Videogames! this? Would be interesting to see it in motion.

@LeMax: Do you have the game installed to your xbox hdd?

Negative PD, that might help some. But the issue with some of the textues wasn't how long it would take to show up...some just don't show up in the environments until you get 3 feet away.

Yep, gonna be with co-op too.

So far, my encounters with human opposition has lead me to believe they can aim at me and shoot. They also can scream random things while doing so. Something along the lines of, 'We're getting paid tonight!', ya know. Cause they're private military. So all they care about is money. So they make it a point to scream that when they're shooting at you. Ya know? Right.

Jokes aside, it's typical COD single player fare. Except they never seemed to blind fire.

LeMaximilian

Alligator F*ck House
Ah okay. So would you say it's worse than AVP 2010?

Eeeeh, I'd have to go back and take another look. Although thinking in retrospect they do look fairly similar. Aliens has some good lighting and better art to the environments since it's directly based off the films, but the framerate is an issue.

For those that don't know, framerates bug me the most in games and 60 fps is the almighty gospel to gaming in my opinion. Anxious to see how the PC version runs.

Oh god...

Everytime I read something like this I picture Randy Pitchford yelling at the employees "MAKE IT MORE BADASS!!!"

Did they even understand the implication that humans shooting humans in this scenario would completely destroy the notion of the Aliens being fucking deadly creatures and the only thing that counts is survival?

A well placed shot with a shotgun (even if it is not upgraded) will instakill a Xenomorph in the first couple of missions that i've played. You will not die because of the Aliens.

Well I can deal with a 7/10 game. At least I don't feel completey screwed on my preorder now. Was obviously hoping for better, but I have already preloaded it and I'm ready to give it a shot.
