34,000 pieces of Wii U software were sold in the UK in January (incl. NintyLand)

Haha, hot damn. This is bad.

EDIT: As an aside, one of those games was bought by me.

You're welcome, Nintendo.

The DC swirl was blue in euro / PAL land.

You are right. Here you go:

Does anyone remember the massive price drop of the 3DS a few months after launch? Now it's doing just fine.

People also tend to forget that the 3DS was doing nowhere near as bad as the Wii U is now too. It performed poorly during the holidays and fell off like a rock in January. They can "Recover", but like the 3DS it will be a heavily revised definition of the word. 3DS is tracking to match PSP/GBA territory right now (GBA was only on the market for just under 4 years before they began to phase it out).

People say not to underestimate Nintendo and that's all well and good, but I say also not to underestimate the effect that the upcoming competition will have on interest. Best case scenario, maybe a userbase of 7 million by the time the next-gen consoles hit? Will that be enough of a head start?

Someone else made an interesting point in the other thread:

All handhelds combined (3DS+DS+Vita+PSP): 309K
PC (retail only!) : 228K
I'm really impressed by this. I forgot to ask JVM about whether or not those numbers included digital. The PC is well on it's way to being that secret second place in the UK once you count digital, I think.

Very cool

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

I have no idea how good/reasonable 7 million by November is, but given how strong Nintendo historically is during the holidays and making reasonable assumptions on a price cut and bigger games, I think that would be a decent position to be in.

Guys I have a plan, what we'll do is launch early and sell nothing while paying the higher costs for parts to get them out there for people to not buy, have our third party partnerships run to the competitiors, then sit around for six to eight months while the other systems are announced, hyped and developed for. THEN WE MAKE OUR MOVE.

lol.

All part of the masterplan!

Yikes, that is awful. Iwata talked so much about the importance of software momentum and what does Nintendo do? They fail to provide it. It may not be as bad as the 3DS situation in the first half of the year, but it is still happening. Wii U's launch window got fucked.

PC digital has the unfair advantage that you can get most recent games for the price of a McDonald's value meal within a year of launch. Meanwhile Nintendo is trying to charge me $39.99 on the 3DS eShop for Ocarina of Time 3D that they released at retail 18 months ago.

Kazification is the best thing to happen to this board in a while. :lol

I'm not sure that this is an "unfair" advanage. Sounds like one industry understands and respects their customers a bit more. Also, they don't have as much pressure from retail hounding them.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
I think people are in for a rude surprise if they think the 360/PS3 successors are going to sell that much better in the UK. There is no appetite for new consoles, none at all. People don't have £350 to spend on a new console when they are still perfectly happy buying just FIFA and CoD every year.

This is looking more and more like a gamecube 2.0
Reverting back to their pre-Wii days, which is unfortunate because they became too complacent thinking they could pull off another Wii.

Thank you, based JVM.

Total software sales for Wii U for the month of January were 34,000. This includes bundled NintendoLand.

This is a disaster. Shibata needs to do something quick. The software line up over here is awful now Rayman has been delayed.

Finally Vita beat a next gen console. Vita is safe.

I think they became complacent thinking they could sell hardware without compelling software. The Wii was a hit because of Wii Sports.

'Software sells hardware' was Yamauchi's golden rule and whether it's due to development problems, fear of competition leading to rushed launches or sheer arrogance, the 3DS and Wii U have been seriously damaged by the quality of first party software they launched with. I'm not saying NSMBU and Nintendo Land are bad games (they are very good games) but they were never going to be enough to get people to spunk £300 on a new console. People have never bought hardware due to things like processing power, 3D display, second screen, etc, they buy them to play games.

The average consumer does not have the disposable income they did in 2006, you have to do far more these days to sell a console to someone.

This thread. All the creativity. All the good and relevant discussions. I know why I can spend hours here. I love you GAF:ers!

On topic, those are bad numbers. Today, there is no real good reason to spend money on the Wii U. That's just the way it is.

Nintendo was arrogant releasing such a weak system and didn't bother to support the damn thing thinking 3rd party devs would do the work for them. Now my Wii u is collecting dust and will be for months to come

Nintendo deserves these sale numbers

What happened to "we learned from 3DS?"

It looked like they had when they had 2D Mario at launch followed quickly by Pikmin, Wario and Wii Fit. Sadly as always Nintendo had to delay those games and here we are.

Welp. E3 can't come soon enough.

PS4/720 should do better, but I wonder just how much so. I mean DS is even a bit higher than 3DS. PS3/360 should still sell well based on cheaper prices for a while...

I'm going to go out on a limb here but if the recent Mario U was released under a different art style something akin to Yoshi's Island I bet that would have got more people onboard.

Agreed. It just looks like a slightly prettier version of the same game that we've seen before.

Nintendo failed to show consumers a single compelling reason to buy a Wii U at launch. It's not terribly shocking that people are not flocking to buy the thing.
