Am I the only one who seriously doesn't care if the sticks are symmetrical or not? I'm able to switch between the PS3 and 360 and even Wii U with ease.

Guy guys guys... enough about thumbsticks.

We really need to pick apart what that twist-tie is for. It's in the shot for a reason and we know, from history, that Sony will include it in their next console. How will that twist-tie be used for the PS4?

No. Seriously. Enough with the thumbsticks. You're not thumb-wrestling your siblings - you're pressing buttons and moving sticks. Get over it.

Besides - if you don't like it - don't buy it. Simple. I don't see the issue here.

This seems to happen at the start of every generation. Suddenly out of the woodwork people are surprised and upset that this company or that company are going to design things the way they've always designed them. The fact is millions of people play on both controllers without any problems or complaints (myself included). These next couple months are the only time they can express their frustrations.

my favourite part was when you made it sound like a fact. I love when people do that.

that is the problem, it is a personal opinion, fine with that, but they post in forums like it is a fact and only truth, it is very usual from 360's pad fanboys, and then some ask why the 'hate' :
I don't understand all this hate against people who apparently "can't hold the controller" correctly. How would you know? It might be a legitimate problem for the person. A "one size fits all" controller only caters towards the majority, so I can see it being an actual problem. These tactless responses are lame as hell.

here is your answer, because some of those behave like the ones we find DS3 fine are wrong or have weird hands

you are not alone, I prefer symmetrical, but i have zero issues switching controllers. All of them are great.

I figure the controller likely has a built in mic somewhere, so I wonder how functional that'll be. For example if I'm using my PS4 to send an e-mail or post something on GAF, can I do voice dictation? Might be interesting... in theory...

Yo. I usually rock a 360 controller for 3D games, but hundreds of hours of Monster Hunter Tri with the CCPro dissolved any prejudices I had against the symmetrical setup.

So, anyone still think this controller might have those funky bands to make it heat up and cool down?

EDIT.

Also any rumours of NFC tech in this controller? For example for quick, wireless pairing to a mobile device, or to enable one touch miracast screen mirroring from your mobile device like the newer Bravia TV remotes?

From VGLEAKS:

ORBIS Controller Features:

- Motion sensors:

  • 3-axes gyro sensor
  • 3-axes velocity sensor

No magnetometer/compass? Wouldn't that just be normal sixaxis, and not even as good as vita or move?

As for the lack of split controller, I expect this is just so you can have default pointer type controls in any games, they'll probably continue to sell move controllers for more specific games that benefit from dual controls.

I'm guessing USB 3.0 is for maybe external disk drives and being future proof if no other use crops up on launch.

Yeah, thats the thing with controllers. It's hard to get 1 controller that EVERYONE loves. Everyone has some sort of preference. For instance, I like the looseness of the sticks and dislike the resistance of the 360 one. Its opposite for other people. I'm willing to sacrifice some stuff if it means more people enjoy using the controller.

Btw, Dualshock 3 fans, question:

Do you hope that R1 is still used as the "shoot" button rather than R2 if R2 is turned into "triggers". R1 is just so much more comfortable to use for me personally. But I fear they will change it to be more inline with the xbox unfortunately.

Yes. It looks like the R1/L1 buttons are shifted back compared to the DS3, so they are about where the current R2/L2 buttons are (new R2/L2 will be tucked away at the back somewhere)

When I hold the DS3, my index fingers naturally fall right between R1 and R2. But it is more comfortable for me to drop them down to R2 than pull them up to R1. With the new proto it looks like my fingers will naturally rest over R1 now

What are we thinking, cost-wise? Trackpad + mic + headphone socket + RHB LED strip, combined with twin HD cameras can't be that cheap. Could overall be comparable to kinect on Durango?

swifty 'confirmed' that those are buttons.

it's entirely possible considering there's no branding on the controller, ie: no printing done to the surface, meaning no labels under the buttons.

all i know is that what we see there is missing 2 buttons. either options/share or start/select. those things look like buttons, soo....

Would they be capacitive buttons then? Not sure I like that - when I need to pause quickly I want the tactile feedback of a button.

With the Touchpad & the glowing track strip on the top of the controller the DS4 is basically a WonderBook.

flip the pages with the touch pad.

How do you figure it has a built in mic?

Nope I have no problems either. I slightly prefer symmetrical - seems to sit better with my hands - but I switch between DS3 and 360 controller all the time with zero issues. I've only tired Wii U controller a couple of times but it seems okay - feels a little odd shape wise but that's just newness : I'm not sure if I'm going to buy a Wii U or not but have no doubt I'd soon adapt to the controller if I did.

Personally I've never seen a shred of hard evidence one approach vs the other really makes a difference during gameplay - for example my accuracy and ability in FPS in the same on each, neither seems to make a difference (and no it's not because my accuracy is shit!)

I'm fine with all of them, but the PS3 is the worst of the three. They feel/are cheap, and wear down much faster than the 360 controller. I treat my stuff well, and I've been through way too many PS3 controllers this gen. I also hope they spread the sticks out just slightly, give it more weight, and fix the trigger situation.

I'm opposite to you. I go through 360 trollers and I don't even play much. Also the crap batteries always mess up and die fast, the chargers always break, etc. etc.

How?

I personally clean my 360 controllers and they've lasted forever and the battery complaint is moot as you can always just buy a cheap set of rechargeable batteries to use instead.

Are you throwing them? The only damage I've seen develop over time is cracks in the rear battery casing but this was on a 4-5+ year old controller.

Funny considering both Microsoft and Sony had ugly, asymmetric and busy design in their consoles this gen.

I deleted my response to him, no reason to feed such a obvious troll.

Was thinking the same, although you do lose some of the nice physicality of turning a book page and seeing something on the next page pop to life as you turn it.

But yeah, the controller can basically serve as a interactive AR marker. Coupled with the depth camera + the touchpad I'm sure the London Studio will probably go to town on that at some point.

Your thumbs collide? Bro umm thats the weirdest thing I have ever heard.

Yeah. I do find it weird. And even pushing both sticks fully inward I dont really understand. The stcks seem way to short for that to happen.

But then when I push them in my thumbs are normally on the outer side.

Er I don't know if thing have changed, but Trevor works for Evolution. Shame on everyone else for not remembering that one post in a Vita related thread months ago like I did lol.

His Vita background work was excellent and I can only be excited for whatever he is now doing at Evo.

His Evolution admission. and also his website link about it

Thanks.

I'm a graphic/interface-designer, currently, specialized in all things web-related and video(animation).

Can't say much about what I'll be doing at Evo though, but it's certainly different from what I do now. Photoshop is still involved though. ;-)

From this thread

All I can say is:

Don't worry.

Things.

Also: The touchpad isn't necessarily something you'd want to use 'instead' or at the same time as the analog sticks while playing...

I would see it as a complimentary addition to the available inputs.

Assuming the new controller has a touchpad, of course. ;-)

Ugh, shitty analog triggers again.

I'm guessing this is pertaining to the placement or visual design? I don't see how you can make such a conclusion without trying it for yourself.

I'm actually very excited to see a new Sony controller as I'm not a huge fan of the DS3.

Didn't know that. Nice one magicaltrevor - your vita background templates have a permanent place on my vita. Plus of course everyone loves magicaltrevor

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
The tip of your thumb, damn son, not the whole thing. Use the joint to maneuver the stick duh. This LOL I GOT BIG THUMBS shit is getting real old. Most of us grown ass men have big thumbs, lots of us are competitive with the dualshock and 360 controllers.

I do find it funny, DS3 is too small for their "man" hands & they don't have big thumbs for the sticks or start/select

I don't like Sony's convex shoulder buttons.

Also, I don't really play any genre of games where analog gives me superior response time or a better experience anyways.

So with the touchpad inclusion, does this mean there is a possibility that the PS4 OS interaction will be cursor based kind of like people interact with the PC's using their mouse?

It's the opposite for me, my fingers rest on R1/L1 naturally (and thumb on stick below dpad/buttons is more comfortable since the stick is higher, the others low). I also don't like triggers and "Oh, but it's like shooting a real gun!" is dumb. I want quick to press buttons, not emulate a gun.

I can understand it for racers, but that doesn't mean all other games should suffer from making triggers the standard shoulder button to use.
