Please God let there be a mini screen on the controller, but DON'T make it mandatory for games. That way people can buy third party controllers to use with friends.

But that's what I'm asking... what is the point then? I hope this isn't for the sixaxis crap, so gimmicky.

Care to explain yourself a bit better?

I dont understand how useful would it be to track a dual handed controler.

Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality , Virtual Reality & other crazy ideas that Sony have that can make use of having the controller's exact position.

& what if the headset input at the bottom isn't just a headset input? could be a video output for low cost AR glasses or something.

R-Zone returns!

Interesting if it is touchscreen. I wouldn't be surprised. It makes a lot more sense for a touch screen controller to have a speaker and a head phone jack, than one with a basic touch pad.

Idk why people are complaining about the possibility of a resistive touch screen.

Far more convenient, and useful than a touch panel.

Imagine editing shared video and such on that thing.

Why when you could do a better job with a multitouch pad and your TV screen? I couldn't imagine the fidelity of editing could be very high on a screen the size of a postage stamp covered 90% of the time by your finger.

Wall street journal reporting that ps4 will stream games. Cool. Guessing a renting service is coming into play.

The resistive touch screens I have used are more accurate than capacitative.

That makes no sense when one considers how resistive pads work. The only upside to resistive was the ability to interact with it using any stylus - glove, pen, finger even a toothpick - and the slightly lower power draw/drain. However, newer capacitative technologies like Pentile have overcome all issues that capacitative had in respect of resistive meaning it is now better in every regard - has been for years actually

Sounds like he's misinformed. I don't see a screen at all, and there's no way Sony would go with a resistive touch screen.

It looks like a small screen to me. Didn't the original rumor point to it being a touch pad like the back of the Vita? I'd much rather have a little screen on there instead of a pad, because it would be kind of weird to me just touching it and making stuff happen on screen, idk. I'm a huge Dreamcast fan so naturally if it had a little screen on it I'd probably squeal like a fanboy.

This is what the leaker of the second next gen Dualshock pic had to say, has this been posted?

The triggers are much more similar to the Xbox 360 'springy' triggers. That's a microphone (similar to VITA, Wii U) and that is also a headset port. Touch screen is resistive display, single touch, used for battery levels, friend lists, mini u.i blah blah. Taken a while ago, only had access to it via someone else.

So it's not a touchpad, but a resistive touch screen? I'm game.

Please be true, please be true, please be true.

Another picture? We can't get a picture of the triggers? Also a little disappointed that it's not as chunky as I thought but still happy with it.

If the screen is only for menus I don't really care how high quality it is.

I'm actually happier with a cheap low function screen than a Wii U type of screen that devs will feel obligated to force into gameplay.

I'm also in the same mentality. I'd rather have some cool little features but nothing forced. A small screen that helps keep the TV from getting cluttered would be pretty cool.

The most obvious use on a two handed controller is pointing. In Killzone 4 I bet you can aim the controller to get headshots just like gyro aiming in U:GA.

Tilt levels in things like Mutant blobs and lbp too.

Could see some potential for camera control aswel. As in left stick - move, gyro/motion - camera view, which leaves all buttons more accessible instead of having to move from right stick to buttons and back.

Yeah, it has the advantage over Move of having a second analog to complement gyro camera control too

so, it's actually a mini display then?

if it's used for menu like interface like it says, you don't really need multi touch cap screen. it's not like you can do gestures on a tiny space like that anyway.

I just hope they include a keyboard on the controller. If its a touchpad, have a glowing qwerty on it when you want to chat. If its a touchscreen, it should be simple to add.

Also if it has move capabilities. Imagine using a sniper and pressing L1 to look through the scope, then you just move the controller for aim. That would be awesome and more responsive then using analog sticks.

Killzone 2 uses the 6-axis to make small adjustments to your aim when looking through a sniper scope. It's not very good, or helpful. Using Move was better, but it's far from perfect.

Lets say thats a mini screen.

1. im playing a game. The screen allows me to skip, pause, etc. my music without breaking gameplay.
2. Watching a movie. I can pause, rewind, etc.
3. Battery level, friends list, messages received.
4. maybe link your phone to your ps4 via wifi? Will display texts, incoming calls? No idea if this is possible.
5. Playing a psn game? Press the disc icon and launch whatever is in the tray.
6. Scroll through your psn games and launch from there.
7. In a psn chatroom with your friends? What they are writing is constantly updated on your controller.

These are things just off the top of my head.

Yeah, nothing ground breaking lol. But it would just be so much more convenient than pressing the ps button to do all of that.

Who the hell (well besides Nintendo, who are 7 years late) uses resistive screens in 2013? They suck.

I've spent plenty of time using both resistive and capacitive, and way more often than not, I get mad at the screen on my capacitive tablet and phone not being as accurate as I need it to be. Therefore, I'd be happy if more devices were resistive, and better yet, if advancements were made in multi-touch resistive technology.

8. If the screen is big enough it could be used like a smart phone keyboard.
9. Playing a game, like a shooter, you could move health/ammo/etc off the main screen and onto the controller screen.
10. Playing co-op games it would let you select a play/move without the other person seeing it.

Looks like my insider was right on the money with the trackpad + LED:
Heard a new rumor about the PS4 gamepad from someone who works for a big developer who claims to have examined it:

1. PS Move tech built in
2. Has a trackpad in the middle
3. Controller ID shown in color (did not understand what this meant, waiting for clarification, either means multicolor LED's or a led display)

My insider is saying:
1. They have tried putting the move colored balls on the DS4 but the latest design omits them.
2. The multicolor led thing is more like the controller edge having a led strip and glowing a different color for more immersion.
3. PS4's will come with a camera bundled.

i thing shagg187 owes me an apology lol

that wouldn't surprise me... that rectangular shape is not optimal for move functions at all, it looks like something designed by someone having more aesthetics concerns than practical experience in computer vision...

What shape is the Wii "sensor" bar?

It's totally fine, with that and the gyros on the pad if the camera is high res.

It's a gamepad, not a wand. Dosnt need spheres at all.

davepoobond

you can't put a price on sparks
resistive touch screen sounds absolutely terrible. not because its resistive, but because its a screen and not a pad.

i would rather it be a trackpad. although i guess that could just be on the back of the controller. so if that were the case, then i guess it being a screen is fine.

Why are you guys thinking it's an LCD? Just because it's glossy? There are several laptops with glossy or glossy-like touchpads. Also looks like the entire thing can be slightly depressed when clicked.

the Wii sensor bar is two leds actually (like two tiny move spheres, but using only their location for position, and their relative distance for depth)
Having 4 leds at the corners of a virtual rectangle would have been perfect for the DS4. Having a full rectangle is a less reliable and precise approach.

The d-pad looks different, but I hope not too much. The d-pad of the previous Dualshocks is probably my favorite out there. This one looks a bit flat, like all the directions are connected.

As a Vita owner you'll probably like it. Sony makes great D-pads in my opinion. I still remember the blisters I got from the SNES D-pads...
