DF: Orbis vs Durango Spec Analysis

Couple of small amendments. I added an "~" to the 3GB as it could be a little less.

Also updates are supposed to be automatic and run in the background.

I'm going to summarize what I know with regards to Xbox 3.

VGLeaks info has been accurate due to what the info is coming from.

- Always online/internet connection required
- No used games
- No BC

- CPU has increased performance over normal Jaguar cores.
- ~3GB and 2 CPU cores are reserved for the OS, apps, Kinect, etc.
- Xbox has a crazy (IMO) amount of hardware dedicated to audio tasks (e.g. gaming and Siri capabilities)
- Kinect is a pack in
- Same day digital releases for all games
All I can say to that is

Yeah aegis hinted awhile back that some devs said it could drop a little come release. Target was in the 3GB range though like you said.

Depends. If they have the support of publishers they might get something in return. Like timed exclusives CoD, GTA or AC. Just read some publisher statements about used games in the past and you know who will support the closed platform.

Can't see publishers succeeding with this. Their sales would be significantly lower if released on just one platform, and I feel that plenty of gamers would boycott the system, not to mention they'd lose huge retailer support.

I cant wait for the next gen consoles to hit the shelves and the hype is killing me, but really what are we expecting other than what we see on pc right now other than the money we save on building a rig. Will the next gen consoles be leaps above what we know today or has the next gen been here already and we are just living in the past with console gaming?

I still can't fathom a reality where those things are true. The failure levels would be incomprehensible. I'm of the belief that even if some of those things were at some point being considered by Microsoft, they will change tune before release, especially on used games and having to always be online. The 3GB being reserved for the OS also seems a bit far fetched and excessive.

I think with a little common sense only Crysis 3 is the first baseline "next gen" game released so far.

The PC version is baseline next gen.

If I learn anything new before I leave the boards, I'll pass it along.

Microsoft would have to be insane to do this. That´s an instant game over.

Disaster, no other way around it. Nobody wants those "features", they bring ZERO pros and 100% cons.

I am wondering how MS PR will try to sell this, what will be the official spin? They face a tremendous uphill battle trying to explain how those are good things. Because they are not and there is not a single person out there who believes they are.

The PC version of Crysis 3 is amazing, basically the next gen consoles will be miniature PC's with more 3rd party support.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I am making an assumption here, but, I presume that Durango will make use of cloud computing for a lot of things and always being online is required. The audio processing is necessary to decode, interpret, etc. However, the real knowledge database must be in the cloud. The being always online requirement won't be so crazy to consumers considering Durango is also competing against Apple TV.

For a consumer considering to an all in one entertainment server, going the Apple TV + PS4 is a more expensive route than going for a Durango. Also, the Apple TV might not play 100% well with the PS4.

Man, the always online thing bums me out.

No BC or used games I can live with (though it still sucks).

I hope they do something special for rental game discs specifically .

I hope not but I'm kinda expecting the worst at this point. It's going to make an extremely hard sell to me if they go ahead with it and Sony don't.

For me I'm not going to write off Sony's audio direction at this point. With the change to Jaguar cores, they will need something competent in that area.
Not even XBLA BC? Man, the only thing that really upsets me out of all this is always online and the lack of an offline mode. That's going to be the deal breaker for most IMO, and certainly going to be a piss off and maybe unusable for people with shit internet connections depending on how the authentication process works. I can't believe they're pushing this on folks, but I think the Kinect pack in has to do with it, for continual access to their database for voice recognition.

From the looks of everything, the consoles are still too close to call. The chip for audio can make the whole difference and make the "special sauce" something significant. At this point I'm willing to believe the whole "Durango is built for efficiency" thing.

Well, publishers. And the pro is potentially the best third party support ever.

I'm more disappointed about the 3GB ram thing. I thought that was something they had when the OS was horribly optimized but if that's still at launch then wow. My W7 never eats more than 1.5GB of ram and that's with a crap load of stuff in the background.

The burning question is... Would they still support the console due to record low sales from backlash?

This thinking could either raise MS or bury them.

Are you an assassin?

He is, but he only kills people with the initials "BG". *gulp*

Nope. The multi channel echo cancellation chip is used by Kinect. The audio chip is purely motivated by lessons learned from 360 where developers used 50% of the 360's cores to mix audio.

It could also be 0 CUs. Why are we assuming that the PS4's DSP can not process 7.1 digital surround sound and that the GPU (!) has to help, when it would be much easier to just use a slightly better DSP (costs probably negligible). This just seems like a new, silly attempt of damage control, sorry.

I'm willing to believe the Durango audio chip is more powerful. But on Orbis they'll probably just do the level of audio the audio hardware can do and call it a day. The suggestion that since the Durango audio chip is better 100s of compute GFlops will be consumed on Orbis is just asinine.

That aside, publisher absolutely can´t afford to not support the Playstation.

I'm thinking more in the lines of exclusive DLC and/or features. I'm sure the games released will be about the same.

So basically the moneyhat from this gen but without the need to moneyhat anymore.

Exactly, Publishers and developers gain the most out of this and is a smart move by MS to gain third-parties.

No it's not. Because the gain is sales from limiting second hand sales will not be worth the decreased sales of new games on the platform as a result of consumer backlash, nor the loss of sales from the PS4 if publishers ever thought to cut Sony out altogether (which I doubt they would).

Way to paint the entire world with your broad brush.

I've got no issue with always online (I'm always plugged in anyway), I do not buy used games and I already have a 360 if I want to play my 360 games, so I see all of these as positives or at the very least, non-issues for myself.

The only thing I don't like is the Kinect stuff being forced down my throat, I want zero part of it.

While that is true... And a bit lazy, I think Gran Turismo 6 will go all the way in audio capabilities.

Depends. I think there is a possibility that some stupid people in their management are convinced people will still buy their console and games with such features because they have "Halo" and "Gears".

I doubt we will see any exclusive support for the new Xbox because of this feature (no used games etc). The publishers will first test how consumers will react and how this will affect sale numbers. They won't underestimate the shitstorm potential after things like this:

Oh no, 17 million sales and a 1.5 star rating on Amazon.

I bet EA are crying.

I've talked to non gamers, casual, and hardcore about this, and they all said that they wouldn't buy if it's always online. One in particular said they would unless the Durango was very cheap. Like in the $99 range.
