Destiny Reveal Thread

Would be nice if there was some dark Souls type invasion pvp. I love world pvp so much. I think i read you can't attack each other though.

Would be nice to have bounties carried out on player killers.(pipe dream)

Honestly, it was so they'd all write stories on it. The amount of coverage Destiny had gotten today is substantial, and a lot of that is because they reached out to so many media outlets.

And they are going to be there; Joe Staten is giving a presentation about building their new world and I imagine the game will get some run there as well.

That's true. In the end it worked out in some way.

Oh really? I hope they get a chance to talk about the next generation part of their engine and how it's incorporated into Destiny.

Not sure if this was posted, but I thought this Twitter exchange between Jonathan Blow and Bungie lead engineer Brian Sharp was really interesting:

I'm a little confused about what he (Bungie Guy) believes they revealed today.

I think Jeff was talking a little bit about that today. They asked him what did he think and he said he wished they showed the game more, but they were a bit surprised that they didn't.

So finally getting around to reading the Kotaku article and this without a doubt sounds awesome. It's ambitious as hell though. However if they can pull it off it will be amazing to see.

I really dislike the notion that I could potentially be doing some interesting story mission, and then all of a sudden some idiot will get dumbed into my game and start charging through an area.

I can just imagine the joy of having a know-it-all 14 yo kid yelling "yo dude wtf you doing over there, come over here and kill these motherfuckers!"

Let me play alone, at in MY playstyle and pace, if that is what I want to do.

I kinda feel like it looks like more than a minor engine upgrade. The first picture you post with the guy in a suit looks like something from halo 4 imo. I mean just compare him to the brute model in your reach picture.

The short snippets of in game stuff we saw in the vidoc looked pretty impressive for current gen imo, much closer to halo 4 visuals than reach. And it'll be really impressive if they manage to keep the things that they did better than halo 4 ( textures, landscapes and number of enemies at a time )

Eh, I think Halo 4 looks a lot better, but this was a very early looking WIP so I'll let it slide. Also, I think that render sorta looks on par with Reach character models, just without the grain filter. Still, the game does look better, no doubt.. it just leaves a little to be desired.. (seems to be a thing for Bungie games this gen)

You know, if it weren't for all the leaks I think we would all be more satisfied today..but after them, I feel like we know nothing.

I'm sure there will be an option to opt out of allowing people in your game.

This guy looks straight out of Halo:

Art style wise everything else looks pretty unique and distinct though.
The sniper that the one guy is holding even looks almost identical to the one from Halo.

Thought I assume that is intentional and meant as a tribute.

It's mainly from reading speculation in the articles. There was a notable comparison in the Polygon Article linked.

here's the article, and some important bits.

"Even in story mode, you will encounter other players on their own adventures, inhabiting and affecting the same world," Hirshberg says.

Well, a moment is described where players have a random stranger save their buts, there's nothing more dark souls than that.

"After reaching Mars, the pair ventured to the Dust Palace, a public meeting place, before venturing into a Cabal exclusion zone guarded by a group of heavily armored foes colloquially known as Sandeaters. Outgunned, the duo encounter another player, a Hunter, on her own mission on Mars. They decide to join up."

It's pretty similar, but it has a wider scope, and is designed more around player convenience, etc.

Yes. please.

You're literally not the only person saving the world anymore. This isn't the story of Master Chief or any one character.

Lol, didn't even notice before you said.

Remember that Bungie likes to model their weapons after previous games though, many weapons in Halo were almost directly from Marathon: Scoped pistol, the assault rifle, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Pistol (fusion pistol)...

Well, we don't know yet though. So being a negative person as I am, I'll assume it's not until bungie says otherwise.

That cetainly not how they phrased it in the Vidoc - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=EwOUi4JDC4o#t=142s

bassically they're saying you do good = you're a a legend. You fail = humanity is dead

But regardless of what they say. I personally don't care whether I'm supposed to be a lone hero soldier, or part of an army of equally important soldieres. If they're gonna throw in a lot of cool story, the absolutely worst thing they can do is force people to play with other people. If something cool happens during a mission, I definitely don't wanna see or listen to a guy jumping around yelling "WOO HOLY SHIT LOOK AT DAT!"

Man, i was so hyped going to bed last night knowing that when I woke up there would be Destiny stuff everywhere....but that reveal just didn't do anything for me, Im still excited to see it, but that was alot less than I thought.

And am I the only one who cant stand ViDocs? I love seeing the passion of the developers but Bungie just seems so full of themselves, I know they want to get everyone excited and all that but it just came off extremely off-putting to me. Either way, hope this looks great on PS4 and ill probably be all over it

Huh, that's interesting. Maybe we'll see those in Destiny as well.

Alright. I'm going to say it.

"ViDoc" is the dumbest fake word. It's like a hokey sci-fi term: "Dexter Nanofuchs plugged his zybernerve into the holonet. The usual lasersports and ViDocs were playing." Every time I see this awful word I want to call 911 to report a battery of language. Oh, it's a documentary? On video? Well stick me in a MJOLNIR suit and call me Sally, I couldn't have guessed.

Sounds pretty ambitious. Has potential to be far bigger than Halo ever was.

It's an extremely ambitious project, the type I think would have been a much better fit for PC, as opposed to consoles. I mean, just from a logistics standpoint, the way they want to implement this is a gigantic undertaking. And they want to do this for 10 years? World of Warcraft hasn't even been going for that long, yet (beta doesn't count). I like the concept illustrations, and the story details we've seen, but I've never been a big MMO fan, and this certainly seems to be coming off as one.

These are some pretty vague parallels. I would say these instances are much more akin to an MMO rather than a Souls game. To think Destiny will be some kind of Soulsian-hybrid game it just setting yourself up for disappointment. Borderlands/Planetside seems like a more accurate comparison.

Am I the only one who doesn't see a resemblance between the Destiny sniper and Halo's?

There's only so many ways you can design a sniper until it stops looking like a sniper.

That's what I was thinking. Glad I'm not the only one.

I really like the designs for the classes we have seen so far. Hunter looks awesome.

Vidoc wasn't that great but I'm hyped as fuck. This is gonna be so great, love games where you get seamlessly put into other people's games while you're adventuring (journey, dark souls). And being a product by jason jones and the other top guys at Bungie, just wow, it's gonna be good.

And I called it back in 2011
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=32354562&postcount=2527

I remember making a post where I specifically speculate about behind the scenes matchmaking but can't find it.

i think its the boxy looking scope that reminds people of the halo snipes.

that said i dont mind it at all.

I don't see planetside at all... PS is a massive army vs. army game of pushing on various, nodes, this is smaller PVE and PVP experience. In Borderlands, you find 4 people through a menu and jump into a game, and you don't get anyone else dropping in, or running into other player characters except those in your party.

This is much closer to the dark souls system where you have kind of limited, focused interaction with people. IE, the game isn't dumping everyone near you like a traditional MMO, or PS. Instead the game matchmakes people into your instance that you can choose to join up with, like how in DaS/DeS it chooses which signs to put down based on level and that you are in the physical location.

The technological description is much more similar also, there's no centralized server outside matchmaking, and your game is always connecting to others/ being connected to. I think

I hope it releases this year. According to press the game is far from finished which worry me.if they gonna release it this year it's not gonna be November since that reserved for COD. It's either october or early next year.

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Sounds pretty ambitious. Has potential to be far bigger than Halo ever was. Bungie was smart to jump off that sinking ship.

How exactly is Halo a sinking ship?

Call me cynical, but this gen has taught me not to care about ambition or ideas, but execution. So many games had so much potential, but fell flat in the end, going to need a lot of convincing to buy this.

Execution only goes so far, though. Without ambition and fresh ideas, we simply get the same games over and over with some, though minor, improvements.

What I hate is people pronouncing it "vai-doc" instead of "vi-doc." You don't call it a vaideo documentary, so why pronounce it "vai-doc?"

This game looks similar to previous Halo games in the same way that The Last Of Us looks like Uncharted. I don't see why people are complaining about something like that.

Developers are comfortable creating games in similar looking styles. Why bash it? It's hard enough to make a massive videogame look good already. The people on this website really fuck with me sometimes.

All these people saying looks like Halo will shut up when they're running around as a Space Warlock channelling sun-energy and casting it at enemies.

I think at this moment, Planetside is probably the closest thing we have to an accurate comparison for Destiny. Because Destiny is even less like a traditional MMO than it is Planetside.

Laughed hard at papaint.

Or when doing some fun inter-stellar space travel. :p

I'm just hoping they don't just go the "fighter jet" route with player ships. The ships look really sweet so far, but hopefully they also go the "Millennium Falcon" route, too. I'd love to have my own little base in there. Maybe there's some form of home-base customization in "the tower".

Today is the first time I've seen the term "vidoc" and I'm already tired of it. We already have words for the things you are doing you, Bungie.

It seems like people are reaching for a comparison and coming up with something less apt to me.

Maybe there will be area control stuff with the factions, and such. That would fit into a more PS like framework, I guess we'll see what "Faction wars" is like.

I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing that it seems like Destiny is hard to explain. As a positive, that means it's doing something new, as a negative that means the central conceit may be too complicated.

I don't think that would shut them up, in fact then they'd probably demand that it should be more like Halo

Or that it should be less like an mmo or world of warcraft :\

A shooter can be a lot of things that isn't halo and that isn't an mmo you know.
Here's a sample with a wide variety of shooters that aren't like halo and that don't need crappy rpg elements to be fundamentally different in how they play:

-painkiller (physics, alt fire)
-ut (arena, movement)
-noone lives forever 2 (gadgets, multiple approaches like stealth/traps)
-cs (gunplay, teamplay, headshots, recoil, sound, flashbangs)
-rtcw (arcade fast paced class based)
-tribes (skiing, leading shots with non hitscan weapons)
-operation flashpoint (realism, camo, planning, positioning)

Me too. Also, you can still make such a ship combative.

By Planetside and Borderlands I mean Destiny will probably be an FPS with RPG mechanics, a co-op focus, and all kinds of weapons, vehicles, classes, loot, and enemies in wide open environments. Judging by the size of the cities and environments, I find it very hard to believe that the social aspects will be as constrained as they are in Dark Souls. The max number of players you can have in Dark Souls is four (two summoned and one invader). It seems like an incredible waste of space to have so few players at any given time.

It's only human nature to look to the things you know and try to draw a comparison from there. It doesn't mean there's a suitable comparison for Destiny to be had, just that Planetside seems to be the closest one.
