Tomb Raider |OT| Lara's Misfortune

Oh really? That's rich coming from someone who hasn't even played the game...

Then again you’ve always wanted to hate this, so your opinion means very little.

You were calling it your game of the generation months before it came out. :lol

yes and no. combat and controls are great and an improvement over the old games, same goes for the story and character of lara. i also love the metroid-ish approach of the hub-levels (unlock new areas with new gear).

but the puzzles are piss easy and there is not a lot of them, platforming is also heavily toned down (not as bad as uncharted).

its a solid new start for the franchise, lets just hope the sequel is more about tombs and less about killing dudes.

Thanks for your impressions. It sounds like pretty much what I thought I'd be getting.

I don't think the enemies in Uncharted are bullet sponges, they have enough longjevity where headshots mean something. The gunplay itself is great. I just wish enemies were a little more agressive. Too often you can beat them with patience.

One thing I liked about Max Payne 3 is how the enemies liked to try and flank you if you turtled like a bitch.

I'm just really not a fan of that kind of gunplay in a semi-realistic setting, especially when they start throwing those big brute enemies around. I roll my eyes. It's so "gamey" and goes against the tone. The huge guy you fist fought in Uncharted 3 was a WAY better use of that kind of enemy, and worked because guns weren't involved. But then they reused the fight like 4 times without changing anything and it got tedious. I also don't like the sound design in those games. Very weak.

But people keep saying Tomb Reboot has better combat than Uncharted, and that's pretty much the only reason I want to get hands on with it at this point. We'll see.

I think I value Tricky's opinion on this game just slightly above Derrick's at this point. Which means, not at all

Both of these dudes have spend day in and day out, literally conditioning their brains to love/hate the game respectively.

Honestly, the way he tried to sell the game actually had a negative effect on me. I've never seen someone so enamored with a game like that before, and that observation alone makes me very cautious of his opinions.

It has been a long time since Uncharted 2 and I've been hankering to play something similar, nice to see this seems to shape up well in comparison.

Ez was going in for DMC. I was pretty big on trying to sell people Mount & Blade: Warband lol

His opinion tends to carry less weight considering he hasn't even played the game. I have. Accusing me of working for the marketing team doesn’t help too...

I agree, you're far too ridiculous to be a plant and even detrimental to the perception of the game here. Could you please shut up for a while? It's not like you have anything new to say that now you've played the love of your life. It's still the best thing ever without any fault.

If that's the case then Army of Two will be the best game ever released.

You're backing yourself into a corner, just stop.

To be fair, prerelease hype for A LOT of games gets pretty dumb in a lot of cases. See: GTAV, where a single new screenshot gets a thread longer than a lot of OTs.

Man, is every big-name/AAA game OT gonna have an Ezekial or Tricky I Shadow now? I can already tell Andrew is gonna be the Bioshock Infinite one.

Yeah but many people were still worried the variety or design of GTA V would be really similar to GTA IV. Once new mechanics were revealed such as on the fly character swapping while out of missions and character swapping choices during missions are pretty big and likely positive changes with the GTA formula, raising excitement and expectations for almost everyone.

Even then GTA has been it's own holiday or spectacle ever since GTA III's release.

Tricky will be back for Tomb Raider II, and I can't wait for hype building attempts when it'll be the exact same game as this Tomb Raider.

wow playing a game before release and trying to tell us you're not part of the marketing team while promoting the game for a year

you need a better story

Yeah cause tricky is the only one that has the game early. Let's just ignore all of them right?

There's that one guy who's really excited about Fuse and will defend its honor to the grave.

Also, there are a few stores near me in WA that broke street date. Just a heads up.

So you have proof that he's a marketer being paid to shill the game here on Neogaf? If not, that's a pretty shitty accusation to throw around.

I don't think anyone on NeoGAF gives enough of a shit about Army of Two 3: Bros Revenge for that OT. In fact, I think EA doesn't give a shit about that game either, considering they closed the studio down BEFORE the game even came out.

Someone like that exist?

8byte. Pretty much every thread, one-man Fuse defense force

Tomb Raider is quite a big blind spot in my gaming history, after finishing this remake where do I go? Tomb Raider 1 or skip to Legends/Anniversary?

Capcom probably doesn't give a shit about me. I went beyond the call of duty to promote and hype up DMC3. I even made a GAF account so I can spread the hype.

People accused me of being a viral or working for Capcom... I wish that was my job.

I don't know anything about that game besides the obvious and using the Frost engine.

Let me guess, they thought it would be like DMC2 and they thought you were trying to sell them on a really shitty game. When in reality it really is one of the best action games ever. Shit, I prefer DMC3 to Bayonetta to this day.

I finally picked up the DMC HD collection and DMC1 still holds up pretty well. I've never played the special edition of DMC3, only the original version. Can't wait to play as Vergil for the first time.

I think the fact that we've got some on GAF who are giving us impressions involving good and bad criticisms is a step in the right direction. I can understand if someone absolutely loves the game, but I'd like a balanced critique on wonderful things the game does, and problematic issues that still exist. GAF is probably the best gaming forum I've ever been fortunate enough to contribute to, so I expect nothing less than that!

Thank God for the ignore button...

But seriously, this game is fucking boss. I think Xenoblade is the last time I've said "damn, wow" at a video game setpiece, or the stuff happening in gameplay/cutscenes

All of the core mechanics are better in Tomb Raider, though. The combat is better, the "platforming" is better and the areas are more open, no matter what you try to tell yourself. You want to try to compare anything in any Uncharted to the beach or, shit, even the first village? Not even close. Besides that, the number of overlong fights in the game I can count on one hand. Uncharted is known for that. The set pieces are whatever, up to preference.

What am I reading? It's like I'm in the twilight zone. The game has dished up slog fight after slog fight with many enemies, and you are trying to say you've only encountered a few?

The platforming is better with open areas? There are no open areas, it's an illusion that gets the best of us. There is very little platforming here, mostly just very easy jumping over gaps.

The combat? It's pretty good. They gave it a good shot but not nearly as solid as uncharted.

It feels like I've been through a cave, through a forest, and through some remote village, a thousand times already.

Oh and the puzzles are laughable. It's literally open gas pipe, create fire, swing the lantern in the direction of the fire and the way forward. Think you are stuck in a cleverly designed room? Yes until the game prompts you to use your shotgun to open the way forward. There are no clever puzzles here, no deciphering of clues. Just wind, explosions, and wave after wave of pirates to kill.

I've been letting this one sink in during the past 24 or so hours since I finished it.

I think it's great, and is let down only by its shoddy script and poor voice acting. For a game so focused on narrative, it's a wonder how some of the line readings ended up in the final game.

Something like that yes. After DMC2 I was SUPER skeptical on the game especially since it was being handled by the same guys who made DMC2 and Dante's new design didn't exactly inspire confidence. It was only after playing the demo that I believed the hype which was that the combat system blows DMC1 away. Of course many people didn't have access to the demo so it was hard to communicate the strength of the game. Bare in mind also that this was when YouTube wasn't prominent and you had to download videos via linked files so it was harder to showcase the game outside of trailers.
