Arts & Farts

If you're talking about preparing scanned artwork for coloring in photoshop, maybe a tutorial like this?

Well I think it depends what you're using the line work for. Are you planning on keeping the line work or just going to paint over it?

Not exactly, I just want to keep my drawings online to make a nice porfolio but while the scanner gives me superior quality it changes the colors of the original piece.

Take for the example the piece I uploaded here.
First is with my cell and second with a scanner.

The picture I took is pretty much spot on in the color of the drawing, but the scanned one I have it in superior quality. (both of the ones in here are screenshots because the images where too big)

What I want to know is how to mess with photoshop options to get my scanned images as close to the original as possible.

brightness/contrast
level adjustment
hue/saturation
color balance

These are things I usually go to for basic overall color/tone adjustment. I am not Photoshop expert though.

Actually I just tested it. Even with just those tools you could get the scaned a lot closer to your photo.

did some concept art training last year and this is one of the things from that.
the mask didn't end up looking too much tiger like but at that point I got too busy with life and just stopped.

nice, kind of sort of looks like archer. the studded codpiece is a nice touch.

nitpick: i think his right hand needs to be bigger, or the bat needs to be thinner. it almost looks like the bat is clipping through his clenched fist.

Thanks a lot, I'll tinker with as soon as I have the time. For your tiger mask I suggest you remove this part.

It should immediately look more tiger-y, then you can just keep working on it, untill you have something you want again.

Just a cropped development of a piece. Slowly building the damn thing up. Been so swamped of late with work and other responsibilities that getting some scribble time was very nice indeed, if only for an hour or so.

Will work out more detailed colours/shadows/whatchamacallits etc., but for now, just assembling and getting the paint splashed is cathartic.

that's a good suggestion. Thanks Winterfang!

Just a quick morning scribble, with some old line work rejiggered and co-opted into a new design. Lots more to do, but happy with the progression.

You know when it's just taking you too long to finish one god damned thing and it's just constantly broken everywhere all over the place. I just wish I wasn't such a slow painter.

And sometimes I want to keep my paintings looking like this, but I never stick through with it. It'll just turn into a normal boring face in the end...

I also hate painting hair. Can never get the shape right or natural looking. Still so many hours ahead.

Quite interested to see this one finished. Personal work or being made for someone? Either way great colours.

What are you guys methodologies for selecting colours? Just randomly chose them or do you go by pallettes or kuler for example?

I don't really have any particular ways of going about choosing colour. I try to keep it varied I suppose, but mainly choose my lighting and shading gradients depending on whether I want the piece cool or warm. I have a particular way of working on skin but I could write an essay on that probably...I tried using Kuler as a guide. It works good for very graphical pieces I think, but hard to incorporate into a painting type style I find. For me anyway.

I'm new here at GAF and Kaioshade keeps telling me to post some art up! This seemed like the best place to do so.

I'm a freelance fantasy artist hoping to get into illustrating CCG cards, book covers, and eventually my own fantasy writings/novels. I'm interested in concept art for games and movies too, but it's still a strange new world to me.

So for my first art post, here is a practice card art image I made in order to gear up my portfolio for that market and also to practice my digital skills (I am formerly a watercolor/color pencil/inker sort of artist and digital is still new to me even 2 years into it). Any crits are welcome! My main concern is if an MtG fan would look at this and think THAT IS A BOSS CARD!

Cheers, mate. It's a collaboration for an illustrated storybook. As mentioned somewhere else in the thread, think Terran Trade Authority meets 2000AD. Big space opera stuff, ultra geeky. Have good some great writer friends penning big story arcs and we're coming along nicely.

Love your work.

That's damn fine stuff, mate. CCG material, no question!

Hey art-gaf, I'm looking to commission someone for album art, for a project I'm working on. I'm not looking for anything crazy (front and back covers for a CD), and will leave full artistic control to the artist. Pre-existing art is fine, but preferably the artist would listen to the material (hip-hop) and then draw based on how they picture it. Only real "requirement" is that it fits the CD cover dimensions, which I would email.

Sorry if this is totally not protocol, but I figured someone might be interested, just PM.
Pay is a hundred bucks US.

So my sketchbook is ruined now. The can of coke I packed for lunch exploded in my bag and a lot of my belongings (laptop, notebooks, school work, etc) including my sketchbook got wet and are super sticky :(

Love seeing this thread updated daily now!

Here are a couple more from me.

I really love the lighting in these! The sense of glow you've created with saturated tones near the light source really make these pop. I'm still learning how to handle light like this. Gurney's book on Color and Light breaks my brain every 2 chapters.

Some work I did a while ago. Not sure if I posted them before or not...was out of this thread for a looong while. And...there's too many, hope I am not stealing too much forum space. Mods, if it is a problem pls let me know:)

Original design of my main character for the comic. At the time I only had 1 character idea in mind and mainly I was illustrating her like an ancient stye oriental drawing.

A color sketch. I liked the mood of it. Based on my school animation project.

A character sketch...was just playing with the idea of some robot/human thingy.
future%20cop%20xyz.jpg

Similar idea as above..except she's human. literally drew her after the one above.

Sketch study of a major scene in my comic

Photoshop painting from like 3 years ago...this took me a me a long while on and off. Was a second attempt at Photoshop painting...

A rework from last year of an old drawing...not sure I like his purple ear in the end. Original on the bottom below

Ink on paper from 2004ish...had not discovered drawing in Photoshop yet:)

color version that I did about 2 years after the ink...not sure why haha

...this makes me sad...I need to get a job that lets me draw all day. Those that have jobs in that, how did you start out? Currently I am just working on a comic book on my own on my free time and I enjoy working on it A LOT. But it's a slow process for me...I never knew I had so much patient for an art project.

Putting shadow on her. The process I enjoy the most. I like the creative freedom there with the shading style I am going these. Tired. going to pick it up tomorrow again. Ended up having to fix her face a bit as it was too rounded. Looks more feminine now with a narrower look and less cartoony..think I am happy with that:) Will have to fix her pantie line higher up to be a bit sexier.

Character design from this week :)
Should be easy enough to tell what character it's inspired by :p

tumblr_mjckap6Nb21rom6duo1_1280.jpg

I don't really know...which character is it? Head and shoe made me think Raiden for a sec but the body doesn't, or the gun...I like your approach, looks very calculated for lack of a better word:)

I've always loved Raiden's helmet so perhaps subconsciously :) I was thinking megaman though :p

Coming up with design ideas for 2 guards for my villain...here's one of them. Messy sketch but I think I know what to go with this.

I'm currently working in my logo, is a design based on my middle name which is Starley. Pretty simple, and S that's also a Star. I like the look of it but I want to incorporate some Typography into it and I'm stump. No idea where to start.

Edit: Yo Bigben, did you manage to fix the Tiger mask to something of your liking?

Haven't yet. Concentrated on my current work. I will go back to the tiger dude at some point after. You logo is coming out nicely:) I really did the black and white image behind.

ArtfartGAF, I need your help! I'm working on two geometric minimalist pieces to get printed out as giclees based on some old painted designs I did (I suck at painting which is why I'm redoing them) and I don't really know where to go further with on this first one. They're gifts for my parents because I'll be moving out soon.

It's gigantic, so click to enhugen. I have the raw AI file if anyone wants to take a look at it that way as well.

Finally had time to sit down and do some actual artwork with the surface pro. Messing around with sketchbook pro in Lieu of Sai, trying my hand at some value studies and some linework.

MAN my Intuos 5 just stopped connecting to my Mac. I'm thinking the USB port on the tablet is busted. I was able to apply downward pressure on the port and it connected for a moment, but then I took the pressure off and it disconnected. Apparently there's a 2 year warranty, so I should be fine, just without my drawing tablet for a week or so I guess....

oh well, off to the animation tutorials I guess while I wait.
