Something interesting in Battlefield 4 site source code

Considering who found it and posted it, it's mostly likely a case of EA having a big head regardless of how much GAF would want to believe it's something else.

Still, it looks bad on EA no matter what happened.

Is this really a first, though? I'm sure I've read things like "This is going to be a strong contender for GotY" in previews before, and this isn't too different.

Not a fan of EA or IGN but I don't really understand the fuzz about it, with BF4 likely being the "biggest" AAA game this year.

I think its the fact that the actual saying of it hasn't happened yet. The site acts like its guaranteed to happen and just needs to be switched on.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
EA has been showing the game off for awhile; they likely got a few quotes from press ready to go. This happens... all the time, with every industry. It's unfortunate that it happened now to IGN though, it is really funny timing!

not that im defending it... just this case isn't that damning. the whole media/gaming industry IS totally borked, i could go for days

Someone want to actually explain this before everyone jumps to Code Dorito levels of panic?

Is this some silly placeholder that the person who coded the website left in? Or like, is this actually intended to be a link with that headline?

I'm just a little confused by what's going on here. People are saying "lol games journalism", but I'm not sure that has anything to do with what's actually happening. Kinda exemplifies a lot of the schadenfreude and conclusion jumping going on lately.

Website source code? So this'd be a like, blurb on the site once it all goes live?

"Battlefield 4 is already a contender for GOTY - IGN," or something?

I assume that's what this means. The shady part is the fact that whatever article this code refers to just doesn't exist yet, which would imply that the preview or whatever is being timed to coincide with the site, which is kinda skeezy - it'd feel more like a timed PR effort than a real preview. Given that an IGN staffer is the one who broke this story, though, I'd be willing to be it's a placeholder or something of that nature.

Hahahahaha hilarious

So they paid IGN to let them make up a quote about it being a GotY contender and they have it in the gates ready to bust out

Or am I just being too negative, perhaps IGN has had their hands on it for awhile and they just checked out their crystal ball and saw that this is going to be one of the GotY's

Hahahaha wait, wait....yeah, no option makes sense that doesn't make IGN look terrible.

Or, you know, it's just a placeholder and has nothing to do with IGN

The funny thing is that these are IGN editors.

Did IGN predict Battlefield 3 to be game of the year? Maybe a lazy copy/past replace from the old battlefield 3 website?

Lmao!

This is why I never bother with reviews. I'll peak at some scores from time to time, but I never take it seriously for games im interested in.

word of mouth >>>> reviews

Surely this is the smoking gun we needed to reveal an overarching conspiracy of paid off reviews and coverage stretching back to the dawn of the industry.

Wait, is this right? So the executive editor of IGN says "Uh, this is weird". Then GAF ignores that the executive editor of IGN is the one pointing it out and goes like "Haha, IGN is bought!"

They posted several times in this thread that they have nothing to do with it and that they haven't seen the game. Wont stop the hate train though
Are you talking about the junior who never once mentioned who he was, as if everyone on GAF would somehow recognise his id? Yeah, not the sharpest tool in the shed.
