Nintendo Web Framework (HTML5, Javascript, CSS dev support) announced for the Wii U

Bold move! This is so much better than introducing a widely available native app framework only to become obsolete by the next system. This is super future proof and a very broad-minded motion. I expect this to become huge in the future.

I wonder how long it will take until it's available to anyone interested in development. This and Unity indicate Nintendo's platform will soon be much more open! So excited! :D

Makes so much sense.
Really really need some big 1st Party Hitters out now to increase the sales of this thing.

Nintendo games + "social games" = win (for the casual crowd)

So, Wii U saved by GAF's upcoming games?

Btw, thinking about the implications of it, that means any smartphone app developer can also release their app on the Wii U? (Still, provided they spend a few thousand to buy a Wii U devkit)

I think it's more likely that NWF will be available in the same way as the Android/iOS/WP SDKs are available, or perhaps PlayStation Mobile. They obviously need more apps, which means they have nothing to lose by making it freely available to anyone interested. Application approval might be tight, of course.

I also doubt this will be limited to Wii U for too long. By the time Nintendo's next portable is out, the framework will most likely include hardware support for that as well.

This seems like it'd be possible to make a game in Game Maker, export it to HTML5, then use this to port that over to Wii U pretty easily.

Neat

It is a good and interesting move that hope it brings remarkable stuff to the industry. The problem is how to fill up the space of big third parties.

Makes me think this sounds a bit like what Vita is having right now.

So, ideas for the official NeoGAF Wii U app?

Think about it, we can have the threads on the gamepad and the memes on the TV!

Hmm, what if instead of 2013 being the year everyone made consoles, it became the year everyone made games? It would be interesting to see how many new indie devs are born and have their games released on the console market due to this measure. Hell, it might be possible for half of GAF to have a game on the Wii U by the end of the year.

I just hope Nintendo has some way of sorting out the bad stuff from the good, but I guess the cost of a devkit can help with that a little.

The intro needs to be the "This is NeoGaf" gif.

I want games, I want apps. Go go indies ! <3
You have my money and I'll be happy to skip some AAA big franchise games so I can spend money on your work. The best 2012 gaming experiences I had were from indies games so yes, I'm really impatient to see what they can make with all the Wii U functions (NFC, touch screen, dual screen, waggle...).

That dude from twitter:
@HappyBadgers @emi1yrogers not so much when I tell you it won't port Toki Tori or 90% of other games at all with this setup.

The WiiU just needs some free stuff, that are easily accessible and playable. Enough to keep me on the WiiU to actually bother buying games for it. Right now it's just gathering dust.

Intel is a partner here? o_O

No not at all. From what I just read here, there is an Intel guy, probably Nintendo fan, who just twitted about an Intel app who try to convert iOS code to javascript.
Converting your Apple-prorietary iOS code to something more standard, that Wii U use now, will be still a bitch.

ah crap does this mean all these web apps get a Miiverse community too?

oh well bring on crunchyroll

Transcript from that site where one goes Nintendo.

- Wii Street U was one of the first apps created using Nintendo Web Framework
- this framework can help create apps that run on the GamePad, the TV, or both
- it can also be used to port games that were developed using web technology
- the software has the ability to make changes, refresh, and see them reflected on the GamePad or TV screen instantly
- Sketch Battle wad demoed, a simple platformer developed entirely in JavaScript and then ported to the Wii U using Nintendo Web Framework
- you can quickly create new stages using HTML backgrounds
- you also have the option to use the GamePad's camera and accelerometer
- Sketch Battle will be included in the Nintendo Web Framework SDK as a demo
- Nintendo Web Framework's codename was Bamboo
- the Framework SDK will be available for anyone to use free of charge after signing an agreement
- devs will need to purchase a Wii U developer kit
- Nintendo will not require concept approval
- this will allow for use of freemium models in apps developed in the Nintendo Web Framework

wow I love Wii Street U this could be huge in a year or so

what was that dreaded Square Enix iOS and Web gaming platform called?

with so many Japanese devs doing smaller stuff this opens the door for ports

how much is a Wii U dev kit?

I've read figures between $2,000-$5,000 bandied around, but I think it comes in at the lower end (the most recent one I heard was comparing it to the price of a "good PC", IIRC). It's an investment - and a barrier - but a relatively small one.

I'd rather they let you test on your own console (even if for a fee like XNA/XBLIG) than buy a dev kit, but a huge step up for the company and good to see.

They have extensions for Nintendo Network. Pretty cool if your apps can access usernames, friend lists and so on. Shame this needs a devkit to work with, I'd love to play around with a VM in an IDE like Eclipse or something -- OR as JonEx says, try code out on my own machine

They seem to have demonstrated an in game level editor for that sketch battle game too:

I believe they're making the source code for that available? Could be very useful!

we would all have to pitch in to get a dev kit for some to put it together

I hate the this site goes MOBILE on my Wii U browser would love something good

I hope this becomes a "thing", not just a promising venue for easy ports. Ninty needs to justify this HARD at E3 with something besides google street view. *crossing testes

So $29.99 for Wii U ports of games that cost 99c on my iPad?

Gunman Clive is sold at the same price on the eshop/Play Store/and iStore; its sold the most on the 3DS. This along with Nintendo actively making the tools available are pretty big things.

I wonder what will come from this

I was wondering if Nintendo might finally move to the only online store they'd be comfortable with - a third party mall of sellers.
They decide what they do or don't push and the customer can simply access them as they would on a browser.

eshop is just Nintendo's front. Retailers could set one up; publishers etc. Otherwise am not sure how concept approval completely works.

Both Ninty and Sony announcing this at the same time makes me raise a rather large eyebrow too.

I guess that proves that the AMD chip used on WiiU is a DX 10.1 equivalent chip.

Wow... I find that kinda funny

I dunno, I read into it a little differently. I'm thinking it means technically, it can do DX11 things, but just stick with DX10.1 stuff because the machine really doesn't have the power for it. But I could be totally wrong because, I haven't kept up with any specs or anything like that concerning the machine since maybe before E3.

Speculation is that it has some features beyond 10.1.

Also, what were you wanting from DirectX 11? Most of the features require an extremely powerful GPU to be able to pull off. Heck, you needed a top of the line GPU the last GPU generation to have enough power to do DX11.
