Thief - announcment trailer

Just read a Game Informer article about the game. It mentions collectibles. In all honesty I'm getting pretty sick and tired of this "gameplay mechanic" in most modern games. It just seems like a really lazy way to pad out a game. Collect 20 of these, 50 of those, 120 of that!!

C'mon Eidos, don't let me down. Do this series justice please.

I know someone must be reading.

P.S. ...and if you tack on unnecessary multiplayer or coop, I'm out....maybe.

tacked on multiplayer or coop is whack. but i would kill for another well thought out mp mode like the old splinter cell games.

that shit is non existent this gen. if multiplayer needs to happen in all games now it's time developers put some thought into it.

If this trailer is CG, then it's a pretty crappy CG.

I'm more inclined to believe it's engine rendered. For example, Garret's zoomed face at 00:55 features some poor texture work. Why would you make such a poor quality CG trailer?

In any case, I guess it's that time again:

#TeamCG vs #TeamEngine

Meh, Thief has always been a slow paced game based on patience, something you can never get in a multiplayer game.

for sure but if there has to be a mp mode they should think of something original. like one thief has to steal something and the other 4-5 players are guards.

games would probably be like 2 hours long though lmao

Oh God, people are really gonna think this rips off Dishonored aren't they?

Anyway, here's hoping they keep the gameplay grounded and don't add stupid superpowers like Dishonored did.

Thierf 2 did it really well (the only one I've play so far). If you wanted, you could venture to places you didn't have to go (usually more heavily guarded) and steal extra trinkets for money. If they don't go overboard with it and do it in a natural, logoical way like this, then I'm all for it.

i was really disappointed with dishonored. the previews made it out to be like everything i hoped it would be but i honestly think the powers were to it's detriment.

i don't even want to be able to see through walls in thief. lets hope anything stupid like that isn't integral to the gameplay experience and you can play this as a normal dude.

Dishonored was a solid stealth game but a great hybrid. The game is at its best when you're combining your powers to tackle on a situation. A stealth only playthrough can be a bit anemic sometimes due to limited stealth focused powers/equipment and lolblink.

I really hope Eidos delivers with this one. I crave a really great stealth focused game that's not Mark of The Ninja these days.

In all games collectibles in a stealth "thief" game makes sense, especially if they can incorporate the stealth in obtaining them. I love collectibles personally, so long as they are not completely pointless (Alan Wake) and tagged on at the last minute.

Mark of the Ninja was phenominal, a true classic in my opinion, Dishonored was not. I do hope this game takes some from Arkham City and makes it a city which is semi open world and gives you legitimate paths in or out of locals.

This post is so right. That's one of the things that kills interest in gaming. It makes almost every game similar. It's like you play the same game with a different looking :(

Meh, Thief has always been a slow paced game based on patience, something you can never get in a multiplayer game.

Some kind of "cops & robbers" multiplayer mode would be very interesting. For example, cops/guards guard the objective and robbers/thieves try to steal it. The game could feature several stages:

1. You start on the streets and have to infiltrate, for example, castle where the objective is located.
2. Once inside the castle, steal the objective.
3. Escape with the objective (thieves "win condition").

There could be 2 versions of multiplayer:

- hardcore mode - no respawns (or, if this proves to be too difficult for thieves, the team can respawn, but only once, on the beginning of the second stage (castle infiltrated)). Guards win if all thieves are eliminated or time runs out.

- normal mode - respawns enabled, but for example, in the second stage, the thieves must locate and open a secret passage to enable "backup from the Thieves Guild" (or whatever you want to call it). This secret passage should be randomly selected (and relatively easy to access), thieves should see it on the map. Guards can't see it or access it (to prevent camping). Guards win if the time runs out and thieves fail to secure the objective.

Derrick is right, it doesn't matter if it's in-engine or CG - it's highly directed footage that is not indicative of what the product will be. Remember early Bioshock Infinite footage? That was gameplay, and even that wasn't indicative of the final product. Game development is such a huge task for AAA studios these days that they can't just show off a demo, they have to build one separately from the game.

I still don't like grimdark redesigned Garrett. No Stephen Russell makes me extremely unhappy. And the slo-mo stuff at the end was lame.

Still, it could be much worse. I dunno... we'll see how this turns out.

One remark; they should place two or more objects in a level. Otherwise the guards only have to camp in front of the objective and kill the thieves when they try to pick up the objective.

Eidos please

1. Don't reboot the great story.
2. Get the original voice actor.
3. Don't waste time and assets adding a multiplayer mode.
4. Bring back "sandbox type" missions.

anyone who saw the crappy screenshots knows this is cg.

Yeah collectibles are the worst usually because their existence is only for padding and achievement purposes.

It makes even less sense in this game when your whole fucking job is to steal collectibles!

The trailer look good.
But Does it feel like a Thief game ? Um not really

No Stephen Russel voice , music is not the same style as Thief serie .

And they don't seem to have kept the same style for Cutscene .
CS in Thief serie have always been great and were unique .

Im not saying the game will be bad but so far it doesn't feel like Thief at all .

Why do they have to reboot every freaking series this gen ?

This game has been years in the making as a current gen project. The engine would have been built for the 360 and PS3. Id say the trailer is CG.

It's a highly modified version of the Unreal Engine 3.
From the FAQ thread on the official forums:

http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=118236

WHICH ENGINE & PLATFORM?

Eidos Montreal is using a highly modified version of UNREAL ENGINE 3 for Thief

Quote: D'Astous - "With Thief, we have had more time to evaluate the different options and we've gone with the Unreal engine instead of the engine we used for Deus Ex."

"I don't want to say that engine choice is crucial to the success of a game, what's crucial is to have good people working on it. My approach is to let the team decide what technology they want to use, they had evaluated it and chose Unreal. It's funny, Deus Ex has a completely different set of problems to what we have now with Thief. Every project has their set of challenges, but that's what keeps us alive and on our toes. It's difficult to predict our problems, what's important is how fast you solve them."

You do realize you don't HAVE to get the collectibles right? You can ignore them, play the main story, and be done with the game. I never understood why some people complain about this. Collectibles have been in games for forever, it's not a new concept.

Yeah can't think of many games where I've enjoyed having collectibles to find. The Bioshock games I don't mind because the audio logs add a lot of texture to the story and world. Then the hidden packages in GTA games prior to IV were good because you were given a constant stream of rewards for them that were actually useful. The pigeons in IV were utter wank though.

You've been playing the wrong multiplayer games, Mr. Metalmurphy.

Gamers still cry out for the day a video game will claim the legacy of asymmetrical MP featured in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

More on topic, the first Thief blew my mind back in the day, made me feel like I was living a pen-and-paper RPG. I hope this one can do the same.

Eidos montreal new blogpost on why they chose a new voice actor

So, I’ll cut right to the chase here... On behalf of the community, I have to ask: was Stephen Russell ever considered for the role of Garrett?

Steven: Yes, absolutely, Stephen was considered quite heavily. We actually had him in for some preliminary vocal recordings in fact.

Jean-Christophe: Yes, it was actually very early during development at that time that we had him involved, before we made the decision to record our actor’s voices and their movement at the same time using a full performance capture technique.

So, back to Stephen Russell then. Why did using a full performance capture technique affect your decision?

Steven: With the new visual of Garrett we'd created, we found that there was a disconnect that we couldn't ignore between the concepted character and Stephen’s voice today.

Jean-Christophe: Yes. And to answer your question directly, the actor playing Garrett needed to be able to perform his own stunts. Garrett’s a really athletic guy. We could have pasted Stephen’s voice on top of the actions and stunts of someone else, but this wouldn’t appear natural. It really wouldn’t make any sense to capture the full performance for our other characters, but not for our star.

I actually think the new voice suits Garrett.

Also gameplay footage should be coming soon

We’ll be bringing you more from the guys on the first official trailer soon. Plus, hot on its heels, we’ll also be introducing you to the voice of Garrett himself. To top that, we’ll also be bringing you the very FIRST, exclusive, in-game footage of Thief in just a few days. Looking forward to sharing more with you all!

Thanks, Lost_Paradise.

Steven: We’re absolutely huge fans of Stephen’s work on the classic Thief games. But when it came down to it, we ultimately realized that holding onto Steven as the voice of Garrett just for the sake of our nostalgia would be like wanting to cast Sean Connery again in the new 007 movies... It’s a nice thought, but honestly, it wouldn’t make sense for anything else other than nostalgia.

It's not nostalgia. It's iconic, memorable, and well-done voice work, which Russell is perfectly capable of doing now. Not quite the same thing as the Bond movies.

I know this is going to sound petty, but things like this do affect my purchase decisions. I'll still keep an eye on this game, but yeah, this is disappointing (though not entirely shocking) news.
