Microsoft sells Mediaroom, Xbox to be their TV strategy going forward

How is that wrong? Besides X-game party chat, it offers pretty much everything that Live does right now and PS+ is 100x better if you want to go the 'pay' route.

And of course we're "assuming". I constantly see the posts of "wait until it's announced" .... why? This is a forum meant to foster discussion. I think speculation and rumor discussion is the #1 reason for these types of places to exist. If we ONLY went off what PR "officially" released this place would suck.

I don't understand why that's a "huge leap" when it basically happens right now.

Party chat is the most important feature for me and my friends. It's the reason we're on Xbox Live and not PSN.

As for next-gen, we just don't know. I wish people stopped making judgements based on information they don't have.

Keeping the hope alive eh?

I understand if it's just one rumor, or maybe even two. But the events in recent memory are very telling, not even counting the heavy rumors that we're hearing.

When there's smoke, there's fire and this fire has already risen.

And sometimes where there's a fire there is a BBQ and I love BBQs!

The only thing that I'm really curious is how they will plan their Strategy on Japan and Europe (Europe is more than UK by the way) to be honest. I can't wait.
Same here, how do they do an viable IPTV service in Europe?
The current TV providers are not stupid & have all their content encrypted so they only work with each providers box.
I can't see them agreeing to give MS access to their stream or decryption.

If its just a FTA device then its bound to fail as these are standard on virtually all TVs sold in Europe already or through a very cheap box under the TV.

Heh, so would it be okay for someone to say that Sony isn't focused on gaming if they didn't like PS franchises then?

It's silly.

Rumors.

That's not to say that some won't be true--- I don't know.

However, too many people are jumping to conclusions, setting themselves up in the perfect position to eat crow.

Looking more and more like 2005 all over again.

It's rumors indeed but it is suspect that it keeps coming up from different sources. There is nothing else to talk about regarding the nextbox so that is why people are discussing these rumors. I am sure most would like this to be fake as it is bad for the industry.

I've been on this sure for years and have never seen such one sided debates against any console maker before..all before anything is even announced.

This is kind of Microsoft's move when they launch a new product. Cast the net as wide as possible. So, you'll be hearing a lot about the non-gaming aspects of the next box, much to the annoyance of the core gamers.

It was true to a lesser extent for the 360 also. A ton of focus on the tertiary stuff.

I love Halo and Forza and Gears, but if that's all Microsoft will be giving us, then I'd sadly have to take my money elsewhere. I need new IPs too. Need new stuff.

The studios that have been in the dark for a couple years, and the new ones, are certainly working on something.

I have a feeling we'll see multiple new IPs and some possible Rare reboots. I'd almost bet on it. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft has more new IPs to show off than Sony.

I'm one of the few cheering for both sides though. :(....:)

Why is this exactly bad news? Do people seriously think MS is just going to drop gaming alltogether when they add more features?

Without it even being announced or having any confirmed details... yep sounds like GAF.

What makes you think it only works on a single device?

It's a primary focus because Microsoft wants to be the center of the living room.

Where else besides your 360 can you use media you purchased through your 360? That's one device. I can't play it on the go, I can't play it in my bedroom where I don't have a 360. That's my point. How would they compete with Apple TV in the living room, iPad in the bedroom, and iPhone on the go playing a single purchased content? People won't buy multiple xboxes for this purpose and you can't take it on the go.

They aren't rumours any more. People are stating them as fact, and if the console shouldn't have those features, they'll covince themselves it was because of what they did.

We've been here before with the PS3 and no used games.

As for next-gen, we just don't know. I wish people stopped making judgements based on information they don't have.

It would be much easier to not join rumor and speculation threads than to stop an entire forum from discussing things they want to discuss, or completely ignore the posts that are obviously based on rumor (which would be every single post ever made about the new Xbox since nothing is official).

I wish people would stop saying "wait until the reveal" personally.

And I'm glad that the one reason you are on XBL keeps you there. I loved party chat too when I was in it, ruined other games when I was playing solo though as everybody else was in party chat too, but that's just opinion.

Party chat is literally the only thing differentiating them at this point besides the actual game selection.

I'm not making any purchasing decisions off of what I can only speculate on. I can say it's an uphill battle for MS after what XBL and their focus on games the past 2 years have been. I might love what they offer but based on rumors and leaks, I'm not really all that interested in what they are doing.

It can go either way, but based on what we've seen and heard, I'm not impressed.

MS's interest in gaming was always just a trojan horse to get Windows under the TV.

Thinking of Durango as a games console is selling it short. This is going to be a living room hub for the Windows 8 ecosystem of apps and media. It's the whole play: tablet+phone+TV+web services+media. The same thing Apple and Google are doing from different directions (and to a lesser extent Samsung and Sony).

Personally I think it's going to be an interesting device and they will win over a lot of the skeptics. It will have some great games, no doubt about that. Then just having an App store on a console is going to be a huge step forward from where we are currently.

I still think Microsoft is making a mistake here. I simply don't think enough of a market exists for a "it only does everything DECENTLY" -box to justify the risk of alienating your existing fan base.

If this ends up being a cheaper alternative for my cable service, then I'm all for it. In fact, I'll take 3.

The Comcast Xfinity app and HBO GO are my goto apps for streaming HD movies and shows! MS adding its own cable IPTV is what I have been waiting for next gen, and MS will deliver on that front. With the standard Next gen Kinect on every Durango box, navigating through the IPtv with simple voice commands will make browsing that much easier! IPTV Another key feature the Durango system will have that the PS4 doesn't have.

Yes, they released another halo and another gears and another forza. What else?

Wait I've seen this discussion enough that I can answer the question myself.

*incoming list of xbla games that 80% also released on PC, but PC doesn't matter because idk list wars*

Yup we know how it works.

They release 4 of their big franchises back to back including one only two weeks ago and it bu-bu-but what else?

They are publishing and releasing games on XBLA and it bu-bu-but that doesn't count because some of those may make it to PC.

Plus we know XBLA games don't count, only journey counts on PSN or if i's a multi like Walking Dead.

Standard.

That's the point of this entire thing, it's to become the one device you go to(that includes both Playstation and Xbox.). You might have a Smart TV but if you've had any experience like me the UI is usually a pain and services offered usually quite limited.

Mu sumsung Tv do more than my 360 where I live, media wise. Good luck to Microsoft with their new strategy outside of the States.

But to truly leverage a single media purchase into a good buy, then I would need to also own a windows phone and windows tablet so I can use my media across multiple devices. And I just don't see the population jumping on the MS bandwagon for something Apple and Google are already doing so well and dominating at it. The sales of Windows phone and Windows tablets and the adoption rate of Windows 8 only proves that they have zero mindshare when it comes to people feeling like they want the breadth of MS's hardware product line. An Xbox media hub is not going to change people's minds. MS isn't going to stumble into an iTunes media store level of dominance. People are maybe going to use Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon streaming. Things they can use across devices with a single subscription.

I personally won't buy any media besides games on an Xbox because I don't have other devices to use it on.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped the name "Xbox" in favor of something more mains friendly. The "extreme videogame box" naming behind the original Xbox seems less relevant of a name.

No if anything they are using the name more on windows phone,w8,etc.

You wouldn't me surprised if they completely scrapped a brand name that has been adopted by much of society as the go to term for referring to gaming? This is getting ridiculous...

They can easily switch to a multiplatform strategy if they want/need to... in the end it's all about selling the services and the software. They already made some of the Xbox connectivity multiplatform (Smartglass runs on iPhones, android and of course windows phones), and even Office is extended to non-windows OS.

I don't really care how good it is. I'm not paying a monthly fee for the right to use a console that isn't even gaming focused.

I agree, but we dont really know what it is at the moment. Sure the "info" we have says it will be mainly media focused, but then I wonder how Microsoft will sell the system in countires other than the US, as the systems used elsewhere is very very different.

In the UK we get a free set top box with our cable subscription (Which can be quite cheap depending on the deals you go for), so I wonder what hoops microsoft will try to make customers jump through to have that "one box that does everything".

I have no idea how the rest of the world works on this front..

All doom and gloom, all day lol

But seriously, all we have are some strong leads into their next gen strategy and so far, as far as gaming is concerned, it's bad.

Hopefully the informed gamer can make up their own mind.

I swear you guys have selective memory.

There were tons of rumors about ps4 locking out used games, having to register a game to a psn account so a connection to the internet would be required, no bc, pay to play online, etc.

Most of the rumors were proved false, but when February came around everyone just forgot those rumors even came up regularly.

I had to look up smartglass. So it just interacts and controls what's on your TV, right? You can't actually watch your 360 media collection on the go separate from your TV? Because that's what they're going to need to have available in order to make their product seem equal to other media purchasing possibilities that are out there.

I don't know why anyone's surprised by this. The whole reason MS built the Xbox, and specifically Xbox Live was to get into the living room.

I mean there are articles from 2001 - 2003 that talk specifically about it. Am I the only one who remembers articles like this?

NY Times said:
While Sony and Nintendo have online plans, networked game playing is peripheral to their video-game strategies. For Microsoft, it has been integral to the Xbox plan from the beginning -- the wedge with which Microsoft hopes to gain entry to the nation's and world's living rooms and become an entertainment powerhouse.

Don't be silly. The "XBOX" brand is the only thing at MS that still has a ton of positive cache and momentum.

You are twisting the argument.

They HAVE released games --- games that are part of core franchises.

Therefore gaming is still a big focus for them.

That's what this was about. It was never about your opinion on the variety.

I find your argument ironic in the sense that one could say that same for what Sony has put out recently.

"Oh another GOW game and a new Sly game... Whoopee."

It's silly.

360 exclusives 2013: Gears of War Judgement.

PS3 exclusives 2013: Ni No Kuni, Sly Cooper, God of War Ascension, The Last of Us, Beyond, Pupeteer, Rain

Difference between MS and Sony in a nutshell.

At the moment it's "only" adding additional info on a client screen (like details on the artist when music is playing, a GPS map in some game), and sometimes a little bit of interactivity (emulates a touch pad for IE, generic remote control...).
It's still very simple, but it's obviously a first step towards a complex communication between all your devices.
