Smash Bros is one of the very rare actual "this will increase the number of people who by your system" sellers out there.

Halo 1-3 were like this. GTA from III on, Metal Gear main line series, FF during the PSX generation, Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter Portable in Japan, mainline Pokémon, Mario Kart, and Call of Duty from Modern Warfare on.

Ughh, no one is denying that smash is a system seller. So is Zelda. The point is those franchises are not going to change the system's fortunes. It will just go from dead like the Vita to sort of viable but ultimately a failure like the GC. Nintendo has lost this round.

The round between which consoles?

Hey, did you ever find out what Straight Right was up too besides Deus Ex?

Not yet. Waiting for a response to my interview questions. Hopefully soon!

What are you referring to with this?

I thought they had another staff exodus? I must be mistaken.

Because other systems can't have system sellers right? GTA? Halo? Nope, only Nintendo, and if the overall system finishes in last place then well, it doesn't even matter how many copies it sold! Despite selling to HALF OF THE INSTALL BASE.

Jesus christ, what a post.

No. Other systems cannot have system sellers and yes, if it finishes in last place than it doesn't matter. Even if it sold 100 million units, it wouldn't matter. At all. Never. No value. Zero. No importance. Nintendo should never have even tried to develop said game. . .

smh

With regards to the GCN, SSBM definitely resulted in increased hardware sales around its launch.
fam

The spike at week 11 is due to SSBM. However, there wasn't any sustained increase in sales as a result of its release, so far as I can tell.

Nintendo doesn't need to be in direct competition with anyone to lose. If they fail to meet their own goals, or worse, fail to turn a profit on the Wii U, they will lose, regardless of the performance or existence of any other hardware on the market.
Of course but dude is talking about a round. A round that has yet to be done.

since the gamecube? sure there are. wii/ds sold tons of units and first-party software. check google trends and look how high the franchise peaked during that era.

How much did Galaxy, Zelda SS, and Brawl sell?

How much did Sunshine, Zelda TP, and Melee sell?

Galaxy: 10m / Sunshine: 6m

Zelda WW: 5m / Zelda TP: 8m / Zelda SS: 3.5m

Melee: 7m / Brawl: 10m

These are rough numbers off a quick search.

do you even play Zelda. why would you ever suggest TP as being a GameCube title. i don't think Zelda is a system seller anymore. i'd argue for MK, 3D Mario, and Smash and they all sold much better on Wii. they've never sold bad before.

Ok Im confused. What kind of point are you trying to make?

ya i have no idea

Galaxy 2 is around 6 million. And Wind Waker around 5 million. So if anything there is recent downward trend with those two franchises.

There just seems to be too much minor fluctuation in sales here to claim they have reached a new level of popularity. Mario Kart is the only one where you can make that argument, that it had a COD4 like moment propelling it mega franchise status.

It's ridiculous to draw any kind of conclusion from Super Smash and how it will impact the Wii U based on GameCube and Wii performance, not beyond a vague claim that Super Smash Bros. U will likely move more hardware units than usual sales do.

Both the Wii and GCN were completely different systems in completely different market climates. The Wii U is not a GameCube, and it's also not a Wii. We don't know when SSBU will release, and we don't know how the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 will be performing at that time.

And if you want a GCN/Wii sales pissing contest:

Super Smash Bros. Melee - 7+ million
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 10.8+ million

Super Mario Sunshine - 5.5+ million
Super Mario Galaxy - 10.7+ million
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 6.3+ million

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - 4.6+ million
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 5.8+ million Wii, 1.3+ million GCN
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - 3.4+ million

Mario Kart: Double Dash - 7+ million
Mario Kart Wii - 34+ million

Sure, I'll also add Mario Kart.

GameCube
Super Mario Sunshine - 5.5 Million
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess - 1.32 million (remember TP sold 6 million but 5 million of that was on Wii)
Super Smash Bros Melee - 7.09 million
Mario Kart Double Dash - 7 Million

Wii
Super Mario Galaxy - 10.68 million
The Legend of Skyward Sword - 3.52-4 million (launching at the end of the Wii's life and releasing the same month as other huge hitters hurt sales)
Super Smash Bros Brawl -10.79 million
Mario Kart Wii - 34 million

Galaxy: 10m / Sunshine: 6m

Zelda TP: 8m / Zelda SS: 3.5m

Melee: 7m / Brawl: 10m

These are rough numbers off a quick search.

Are those TP GCN numbers, or mixed? Also, while Galaxy and Brawl definitely moved more units than their GCN counterparts, the fact that Galaxy moved 10m to Sunshine's 6m, and Brawl shipped 10m to Melee's 7m, while the Wii outsold the the GCN by a factor of five is very telling. I agree with H_Prestige. I don't think that the Wii's higher sales numbers actually show a greater number of Mario/Zelda fans. Just similar popularity leveraged with a much larger install base.

How well did New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario 3D Land sell?

Games that have been out since 2006/7 & became Nintendo Selects in most regions sell more than games which came out in 2010/11 and still have MSRP of their original price. More at 11

It's probably the most lucrative non-MMO game ever made.

New Super Mario Bros. isn't far behind. 29+ million. Nintendo sat on a gold mine with it and Mario Kart Wii.

8.1 mil?! Holy fuck.

Holy shit. Wasn't it just last E3 that they were celebrating SM3DL being one of their first million sellers on the 3DS?

It could probably end up selling better than SM64, which is at 11m I believe.

Makes it seem like H_Prestige is cherry picking numbers a bit.

I pulled that number from Wikipedia, and with a bit more investigating I'm not sure how they came to it.

The game was released to commercial success and has sold 8.18 million copies worldwide as of March 2nd, 2013.

They source an official Nintendo PR from a year earlier where it had sold 5.84 million. So 8.18 million a year later is definitely believable, but I'd like to see the receipts.

It's not telling of anything. Game sales aren't linear with HW sales and never have been. PS2 software didn't sell 5x more than GC/Xbox did for a given game

The mainline Super Mario Games:

  • Mario Bros - 40 m
  • Mario Bros 2 - 10m
  • Mario Bros 3 - 18m
  • Mario Land - 14m
  • Mario World - 20m
  • Mario Land 2 - 3m
  • Mario 64 - 11m
  • Mario Sunshine - 6m
  • Mario 64 DS - 10m
  • New SMB - 29m
  • Mario Galaxy - 11m
  • New SMB Wii - 26m
  • Mario Galaxy 2 - 7m
  • Mario 3D Land - 8m*
  • New SMB 2 - 6m
  • NSMB U - 2m

I wonder what it is about the New Super Mario Bros. series that allows it to sell better than the 3D Marios.

Nostalgia and accessibility.

Something's brewing.

It's the coffee. My nightly pot. As for brewing at Nintendo, they like coffee too apparently, so I bet it's that as well?

I'm expecting Wii Fit U, Wii U Vitality Sensor, and Wii U Drums.

Figure if I set the expectations low, anything above is "exceeding" my expectations, but seriously, the past two E3s haven't exactly had the games they showed come to fruition, so even if they show 15-20 games...expect only about 4 of them in the next year.

How many Wii U titles have been pushed from the "launch window"?
