PS Blog Video: Developers talk about the Dual Shock 4

I dunno. The split-screen thing is a solution to a problem I didn't even know existed. No one really used the speaker on the Wii controller. I guess there's some use for the touch pad.

It is a problem if you play a game with more than two screens. You can fix it by having everyone change where they sit, but this makes things easier. I don't like to sit on the left side of the TV while my screen is on the right side of the TV. Makes things more difficult than they should be. This feature will just save a lot of hassle for games that do this.

It's a pad. My understanding is the resolution specs depict how many touch points it has/sensitivity.

That alone would have added AT LEAST $50 to the price. That's a insane resolution for a screen of that size. But no, touch pads have resolutions too. They correspond to how many points of touch input; the higher the resolution of the touch area, the more accurate it is.

Ah okay. Thanks for the clarification!

So you came up with two examples that aren't shooters. Great.

In all seriousness, I (somewhat) agree. But it doesn't make a difference who's doing it if all the end products control like an N64.

The inFamous games both have plenty of shooter elements. Much of the combat works like a third person shooter.

The touchpad to me seems fine. I can see it getting used decently, but not really as a focus such for games. The speaker, however, seems a little tacked on. All honestly, I can't think of a single use for that where it would be better than using the normal sound output.

Also, that split screen mention seems like a great idea to me. In the end, when hanging out with a friend, its a lot easier to just bring a controller than lugging around a TV, console, and more.

touchpad can be used for web and similar things where using controller simply sucks... who else what else can they use it for... we will see i guess.

when it comes to speaker and other things, it is a lot of small things that could come together as cool.

Sounds like more evidence the PSEye will be shipping with the PS4 with the talk of recognition ability the PS4 has.

That is one smexy controller, mmm *_*
Its kind of a good thing they haven't shown the console yet, we get to have videos like this focusing on the controller.

also, somebody gif that PS4 logo at the end of the video, that was mesmerizing o_O

edit: nvm about the gif.

I still don't see the point of the touchpad and backlight. Revolutionizing my ass. Sharing is a nice feature but does it have to have a dedicated button? Well maybe it isn't such a burden.

Seems like a nice controller.

For those who enjoy it, the share button will be huge. For those who don't care, its your new 'select' button. touchpad is brilliant for ios and android games ports, or just exclusive indie games too. and slower paced puzzle games like The Witness could make use of it.

=====================================

I also think that light bar will have more functionality that they're not revealing yet. I have a hunch that they're not letting people have 'hands-on' with the controller yet because it has a built it memory chip/card or something, to keep track of your profile.

And so you could bring your controller to other people's houses, and other PS4s, and all the stats you accumulate will still go to you.

awesome video. I'm getting that next gen feeling of wonder like I did when I read about PS3 back in the day in gameinformer magazines. The next gen holds so much awesomeness for us, can't wait.gif!!!!

PSGaf will know about this, but I'm not sure if I'm a triggers or R1 guy for shooters anymore. I've been playing a lot more games on my PS3 due to PS+, and I'm really starting to like digital shoulder buttons more instead of the regular triggers.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned that the touchpad could be put to good use in helping the RTS (Not so popular these days I know) genre flourish on a console.

While not completely intuitive it's a whole deal better than using the analgo to selct units etc plus many of the other ideas that developers have come up with.

I just hope they put it to good use and don't just mimic the functions of touch screens in phone games etc.

p.s. Also not 100% too sure on how useful the speaker will be but I'll withhold judgment until it's released.

I vastly prefer the shoulder buttons on the DS3 because the triggers are so bad (even after I added the Realtriggers) but I do like the feel of triggers and the DS4 ones look great.

Seeing as I play with headphones on 99% of the time, hopefully the built in speaker can be turned off, or have the sound run through the PS4.

Well that's because buttons are better for binary actions, like shooting.

The controller looks really slick, and the material seems top-notch.

Between Cerny's ultra-soft presentation of the architecture, and this video, I'm seeing Sony take more and more cues from Apple with their reveal of PS4.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a run of ads by launch that are just the console on a white background with a word or price beside it.

A very good point, and something they absolutely should do. The minimalist advertising style works extremely well in establishing the sense of quality, and thus it is no wonder why so many practice it. Sony also has the rare benefit of having a personal color tied very closely to their brand (black) similar to Apple (white).

Also, you're using controllers wrong if you're "smashing" your thumbs together. The fuck?
They did increase the distance between the sticks though, so your issue might already be fixed.

Riiiiiiiiight because I'm totally holding the controller wrong when using twin-sticks in shooters.

Protip: Go hold the PS3 controller, now push the sticks together. If your thumbs aren't banging into each other you either have 1) non-Japanese hands 2) are holding the controller different from 99% of people or 3) are lying.

Thumbstick placement is AWFUL and has been awful since the DS1 due to that. I dunno who keeps letting that pass by at Sony but they need to be fired and the controller team needs to totally redesign the entire thing in terms of ergonomics for shooters and other genres.

I've never had that happen to me across 3 generations. Just for the sake of it I tested it again and there's more than 1cm gap. Got my brother and younger sister (who play regularly) and they never had a problem. Neither did my older sister and cousin who are here at the moment and they don't play games at all. But who knows, maybe we're just a strange family?

I understand it might not be comfortable for you and you've got a right to be aggrieved. But to say people who don't have the problem are lying or holding it differently to everyone else is uncalled for. Since you're the one with the problem, maybe it's you thats doing something wrong

Or you are lying or holding it incorrectly. I never bang my thumbs together. My thumbs come in from the outside of the stick and thus don't cover past the interior side. I'm 6'4" with normal hands.

R1 for life.

I like R1/L1 for shooting even more so than triggers for the 360 pad.

Reason for this is because I have a lot better control over how many bullets I shoot out of a gun. It's easy to just tap the R1 for single shots but on the 360 unless I do it very fast, I end up shooting at least 2 or 3 bullets ( this is mainly due to the guns firing when you only press like half way down on the trigger) which gets annoying.

My experience anyway.

Really hoping they DID NOT increase the resistance in the analogs to something like the 360s. They were peeeeerfect with the DS3

I don't think so. It's probably a personal preference thing but if I use the example of a long sweeping bend in a driving game, I find it way easier to hold the stick on the 360 controller at say 30% left travel for the whole bend, and even adjust it slightly between 20% and 40% as I correct the steering. DS is just too loose for me to get that kind of precision.

Sony usually keeps good, consistent branding with slight modernizations as the years go on. Familiar, yet different.

Crazy thing is the PS2 was entirely based on the color blue. The BIOS, box, logo, etc.. Sony hoping do be the champ again with the PS4?

If you use the "belly" of both of your thumb in the top of the sticks, yeah its happens, but I use just the tip and its fine.

But like they said, DS4 has slight smaller sticks and more space between them, so...

I would say that they're trying to invoke some of those emotions and attachment people have with the PS2.

Ooooh, if they do this, it'd be sweet if they could have something similar to the Swype keyboard on Android.

If it's something which correlates to an on screen keyboard then it could work well. I'm sure we will have tons of little tricks and things we will be looking at when we get our hands on the HW.

thank you. my screen now has rum on it.

No, you have to use rubbing alcohol to clean the screen!

The speaker on the controller seems like a waste. I always thought that was the stupidest thing about the Wii remote.

That's probably what I like the least. Not really sure how much I'd enjoy that. Never liked it on the Wii, but I'm guessing this will be a much higher quality speaker.
