Yaoi is weird

If gay sex traumatizes you I don't know what to say.

Good luck, man.

Oh?

I meant slash in general. Though Molly/Sherlock is gaining ground, and Irene/Sherlock is still plugging away at the bottom.

Moriarty/Sherlock isn't even the second most popular ship! Shockingly. I think it makes more sense than the actual second most popular...which is Mycroft/Lestrade. Since, you know, they haven't even had screen time together lol

Moriarty however has third most popular, with a character not even in the series yet! Sebastian Moran.

TL;DR fandom is weird.

Basically what he said:

Most men in yaoi have soft/feminine looks (like the ones in the OP and rest of the thread). Bara (which I think is technically a subset of yaoi?) is rugged/muscular/hairy men. Here's a visual aid:

Does manly men doing pretty boys have a name? Isn't that like a thing that straight chicks and gay dudes are into?

I thought sherlock pairings were canon, the manga even tries to ship em.

Sherlock/John is basically canon yeah.

There is even a trailer for the show in a country I can't recall the name of right now that plays like it's about a love story between the two of them, it's pretty hilarious.
Why though.

But no, I have NO idea where Mycroft/Lestrade came from. It's just there. Everywhere. In every fic. I have became immune to it's weirdness.

I can think of very few times the actions of fans have undermined my interest in a thing or interest in starting something, Almost all times have involved general overzealousness/obnoxiousness , but not the creepy/weird pairings most fanbases involve.

Well, that is a thing in real life. But I'm not sure I've seen it in Japanese drawings/manga, since the two typically have drastically different art styles, meshing them together wouldn't work I'd imagine.

you sure know a lot about this fandom that you claim to stay away from

Fandom osmosis. :p That's the term for it anyhow, when so many people from another fandom are also fans of the show you are fandoming it up in, the edges tend to blur. Kinda like how I know a lot about Harry Potter and it's fandom without ever having read a single book.

Also, I occasionally visit this site, where Supernatural tends to make a lot of appearences.

I think the combination of the two usually does it for me. Like, I could have done without knowing that Supernatural is apparently so popular because everyone wants Dean and Castiel to get together.

If I cared , I'd probably know a lot about The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, and Game of Thrones simply by what's posted on my Facebook feed :p.

I don't think older/younger is really that weird. I mean it's not like student gets with sexy teacher is exactly an uncommon fantasy, even in western porn. Male student/female teacher, female student/female teacher, female student/male teacher; I've seen plenty of every combination except male/male, but that's probably mostly because I don't exactly look for gay porn.

I mean if they look like they're five like some of the pictures in that post instead of high school students, yeah, that's weird. But I don't think younger/older is inherently weird.

It's a popular trope in guy/guy fanfiction at least.

I dislike AU fic.

I think the largest difference Ive encountered was a Harry Potter, Snape Harry ones and doujins. Otherwise, male teach and male student are common, but usually, at least in the yaoi manga I encountered, there in their 20's and teens. Though I guess I read it as long as the person isnt super ancient looking and the other super young, etc.

Most of the ones I run across are like that too, yeah, late teens for high school AUs and 20s for college AUs.

I just dislike AU in general, so I avoid them.

Edit: Though I suppose it wouldn't be AU in Harry Potter, heh.

I'm not sure everyone noticed but I was being facetious.

There's a lot of weirder stuff coming out of Japan than pedaresty.

Aren't the majority consumers of this girls/women. At least in Japan?

Not sure about Japan, but the vast majority of slash fanfiction is written and read by straight women, yeah.

Edit: I only know of one male that writes fanfiction at all, much less slash. And I've been in various fandoms for nearly 20 years.

Yaoi generally targets women. That's why Bara was invented; the gay Japanese populace needed to express their kinks as well.

Yaoi isn't concerned with portraying reality. And neither are Yaoi fans, I assume.

Yaoi is fucking horrible. 9/10 times the drawing ends up turning me off instead of making me want to fap. They are stick-thin and look like aliens. Bara is less horrible but still is horrible. The men on Bara are typically a bit on the fat/large scale BUT not the large, rugby player type that I like. More like large on the sumo player side. I can't fap to that.

Shota Yaoi is still Yaoi.

But I agree, don't look it up any curious passerbys who see this.

You know what's really weird?

All these older guy-younger (sometimes underage) guy pairings.

What is up with that?

Do not you DARE put Saiyuki under any kind of yaoi. It has nothing to do with it.
Also, Goku is 500+ years old, and also
had a kind of a girlfriend for a while, however tragic that turned out to be
.
