Pirates react to their games being pirated in Game Dev Tycoon

The idea of a game-breaking "feature" for pirates certainly isn't new, but it's interesting to see that these guys, when put on the same pedestals as developers have been put on for years, end up looking for similar measures to protect themselves and their virtual assets.

While it most likely will not, it'd be nice if this can cause a change in perspective of things for these people. It never rings true until someone else starts stealing your shit, no matter how small.

it's not a "loophole"

do you know what piracy is?

Do you?
They did not have a license or any other authorization to download the copy that they downloaded.
The fact that the copyright holders put that download out there does not magically grant the downloaders a license or other authorization.

They illegally downloaded it. Many also illegally distributed it, which is a problem even if they have a license to download the game.

They're pirates, and it's pathetic that there's a defense force for them here.

bittorrent is just a means of distribution. using a torrent tracker is not automatically piracy. the owners of this particular file seeded it themselves onto a service designed to make copies. making a copy of that file is very clearly not piracy.

The fact that they put it there absolutely does not grant people a free license to download it.

and I was just about to post this.

that version isn't licensed for redistribution, so yeah. it IS piracy. if a game developer uploads their game to pirate bay, that doesn't mean it isn't stealing to download it.

Even if 1% of the pirates buy the game, it will be a pretty good portion of the sales already. Wouldn't they lose potential sales by angering and publicly shame a huge group of gamers that already had interest in their game?

Or may be they think that people buy the game for a funny experiment will outnumber the people the eventually buy the game after they played it for free.

so if it's illegal then the developers are the biggest criminals here because they're the ones who made it available for distribution.

and if they want, they can sue themselves for it.

Actually they can probably be charged under the DMCA by a prosecutor.

But that won't happen, obviously. And this entire argument is missing the forest for the trees. Which was the part of my post that was conveniently not quoted.

Tried the demo, I liked it. Oh, and I could leave the garage in the demo.
I think some part of this game is better than Game Devs Story.

But if the devs release a version of the game for free, would you actually be pirating the game if you download it?

If the definition of piracy is copyright infringement, but the copy of the game that is being distributed was created by the copyright HOLDER, and distributed by them, the people receiving the game would not be guilty of copyright infringement.

It's not the delivery method that makes a game pirated, it's the fact that the copy is unauthorized.

So the funny thing is that people playing this version of the game, made and distributed by the developers of Game Dev Tycoon, are NOT pirates.

If you baked a pie and set it out on your windowsill to cool, and I came up and said "Ooh, free pie! It's right here in the open, available for all to see!" and take the pie, I stole it.

So these guys put their pie out on the windowsill.

Well, ignoring the name of the game, I hope it isn't a straight up rehash of Game Dev Story. I had a ton of fun with it, but I want something larger with a lot more stuff to do, so hopefully this game can provide that. Assuming they get their website up again so you can actually purchase it.

With a sign next to it that says "free pie"

Tried the demo, really bad.

It's not a good management game. it could have been a mediocre casual game for mobile, but on pc is bad.

Maybe after the first years there are more option, but at the beginning you have no control on the game development process except for few paramenters, you can't adjust the budget and expenses, do marketing, do previews, find publishers, hire people.

It's not realistic but it's no a big deal, the problem is that you don't have a deep control of your company and there is no way to know something about the market, more data are needed.

Game Dev Story is far better and I wasn't satisfied with it.

Have these guys bought this idea from Kairosoft, in some way or form? I feel I really have to know before I can support a game so similar to Game Dev Story

Oh wait, this isn't Kairosoft?

Fuck these guys, then. What a rip off. I literally thought this was a direct sequel to Game Dev Story, which I enjoyed.

Since Kairosoft has a very distinct art-direction, I felt it wasn't them. This is GreatHeartGames, and even calling their game *Game Dev* Tycoon is just violation of so many things to Game Dev Story and Kairosoft. I tried searching, and they do not mention Kairosoft anywhere, nor Game Dev Story.

Sadly, this smells like a rip-off.

I'm torn.
On one hand, this is hilarious and clever.
On the other, this game is basically a rip-off of Game Dev Story.

Actually, that's also hilarious.

It feels more like a marketing ploy to do the pirated version themselves. Doing this when they've ripped off another game is some sort of meta-irony I don't even want to comprehend. I found this on their wiki:

Game Dev Tycoon was inspired by Game Dev Story (by Kairosoft), which was the first ‘tycoon’ game we enjoyed playing on the iPhone; however, from the start, we wished the game would work and look differently. We wanted a game development simulation which would be less random, more about your choices and a little more realistic. We began working on what would become Game Dev Tycoon in 2011 and created the concepts and game mechanics as well as the game itself from scratch.

Inspired by? Blatantly ripped off, in my book. Everything from the accumulation of the points, to the look, to the offices, to the making of the games, to the menu that pops up on the devs. It's just.. No. I will not be buying this game.

Genius but in a way this could be terrible as the negative feedback from the pirated version could influence the overall opinion of the game, people might who haven't bought it and see these complaints may think they plague the real thing.

Kairosoft didn't invent anything.

you can't have a copyright on a management game and this one is different from game dev story.

Look out for Skymim, the walking/dragon murder simulator, coming from my own personal indie game development studio next year.

It looks like this:

Wait. So I have to actually buy the game to make any progress in it? That's got to be one of the most anti-consumer actions I've ever seen a company make. I mean, what if I'm a poor student and can't afford the, what, $10 it costs to buy? And what if it's hard to find? I haven't even seen it in stores!

I think this is a wonderful turnabout for people who pirate and then justify it. I just hope the irony will eventually catch up to them.

I'm finding the scurrying around to find loopholes in definitions of 'pirating' so these poor gamers being unfairly called pirates can hold their heads high in the belief they unintentionally downloaded a demo and are not pirates *inhales* is hilarious.

gaf needs a rule# as in "if it exists, there will be a gaf defense force for it."
