The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

is Gotcha Force any good? i saw it for a few dollars the other day.

Just for a record, i love games like Tech Romancer, hell, i even bought Custom Robo for the gamecube system and played it a lot.

For a few dollars you can't go wrong. Personally I love it. It's kind of like the Namco Gundam Vs. games. Or think of it like a simplified Virtual On. Even if you don't end up liking it, you can probably resell it for $40+

Was this yours originally, or did you buy it from someone else?

For those curious, the AC Pioneer discs are byte-for-byte identical to the final retail US disc.

Yea, me and my GF at the time got into the program. I still have the box and the calendar they sent as thanks for participating.

What's the story behind that one? I don't think I've seen it before.
They gave them to Managers of Eb Games at some point, and i think they gave them out at e3 as well. I got mine from ebay.

I've been wanting a good non-Criterion Need for Speed game for a while now. Is the GC version of Hot Pursuit 2 as good as it is on other consoles? I remember playing it on PS2 many years ago and loving it. I've already got the Undergrounds and Most Wanted.

Hi,

Although I never owned this model I'm posting a picture of the awesome Panasonic Q.

PanasonicQ.jpg

The Q actually played retail movie DVD's and audio CD's as well as Nintendo Gamecube games.

Myself personally, I have a launch Japanese Gamecube (purple) and a launch US Gamecube (black).

Sweet Mary Mother of-

I forget how much I wanted one of these until I see it again. Pair it with a spice orange controller and I think I'd pass out.

This is my kind of thread! Love me the Cube, its what Im focusing on as far as collecting goes.

So far the Component cables are the rarest / most expensive thing I have for it. Picked them up for around 80 dollars 2 years ago. Worth it if for 80 you are a crazy ridiculous collector. Not sure about this 150 dollar business though, thats pushing it.

One day I hope to have a Panasonic Q and the Panasonic Q Gameboy player. I can dream right?

You need, NEED to get Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Outrageous amounts of time poured into that game. It's bloody fantastic. Best NFS I've played, by far.

What a nice little thread. Nice one, OP.

Although I no longer have a Gamecube, I have the following games:

Burnout 2
Eternal Darkness
F-Zero GX (which I've been meaning to play now that there's a way to unlock AX)
Mario Party 4
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
Paper Mario TTYD
Pikmin (sealed)
Pikmin 2 (sealed)
Starfox Adventures
Super Monkey Ball 2
Zelda Wind Waker
Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe 2 (sealed)

None of the above are players choice, they're the original black label games. Some of them are sealed because of the re-buying I did when I switched from owning PAL games to NTSC ones.

I'd like to get a modded spice orange GC at some point.

Does anyone own this edition of The Wind Waker? I've seen them go for pretty cheap on Ebay in the past, no idea how the prices are now though.

I see. I'd get one someday but it doesn't sound like I'd be able to afford one. :p

If one was to start collecting Gamecube games, would your recommend going for a GC or a Wii?
Depends, there are a few GC games you can't play on Wii, I think. Like Four Swords, Crystal Chronicles. Dunno about the PSO games.
Untrue. I've played FSA on a Wii, even with multiple GBAs plugged in. Same thing for Pac-Man Vs.

PSO has no BBA / dial-up support. There is homebrew that can work with it, but it takes some setup.

Action Replays etc. work.

Game Boy Player does not work, but a piece of crap known as the Advance Game Port does work. Emulation is not great though.

I recommend the Wii. Cheaper component cables, access to the great Wii library, smaller device (barely), better homebrew support (backup your precious GC saves, easy Melee hacks).

Crazy people like spending money (and maybe the Game Boy Player is a neat bonus). Don't listen to them.

I've already got it. Did you mean the Criterion one? Eh... I miss the old NFS games. Criterion just isn't scratching that itch for me.

I recommend a GCN. Launching Gamecube games from a Wii is tedious because you can't use the Gamecube controller to start up a Wii. You have to start up in Wii mode, wait for it to read the disc, then using wiimote navigate into Gamecube mode through the menu screen. Which gets tedious after swapping out a couple Gamecube discs. Whereas on a GCN games launch immediately.

That's exactly why I invested into the component cables, well, this and better image quality.

EDIT: All these Panasonic Q, beautiful. ;_;

The Cube is a beast. Didn't do well in its own time, but it seems like the hot console from that generation that everyone wants to go back to.

-Pac-Man Vs. is an amazing multiplayer experience

-Animal Crossing owned my life

-I wanted that orange console so bad

-Not everyone knows this, but the City Trial mode in Kirby Air Ride is the best shit ever

-Mario Sunshine is the ultimate summer game

Wait why has no one made an N64 thread yet?

I would go with a Wii. You essentially have two systems in one and you can play upgraded Wii versions of some GameCube games if you really want to like Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Pikmin 1 & 2 (especially since they're expensive), and Resident Evil 4 (the most complete version and you can play with a GameCube controller!). Plus, you can play all of the GameCube games in 480p if you have a component cable for the Wii (which can be found for like $5).

The only downsides I can see with owning a Wii over a GameCube for GameCube purposes is not having access to the Game Boy Player and not playing the few games that use the broadband adapter (mainly Phantasy Star Online I-III).

I don't have a ton, but here are the games I have for GC.

I hate that my copy of 1080 Avalanche has a shitty generic GS cover. Someday I'll have to replace that.

oooh best thread ever. The Gamecube is probably ,my favorite system of all time.

The collections here are really nice. At last count I think I had around 95 games.

Fire Emblem is one of the few GCN games I still want to play. It's so rare and costly now though.

I don't think you can play PSO but you can play four swords just fine. The other thing you can't do is use the gameboy player on the wii.

Here's my collection:

My most prized game is probably Phantasy Star Online Episodes I & II Plus. I'm also pretty pleased with the Skies of Arcadia Legends that I picked up at a Goodwill for $3.45. I also have the component cables.

Still need to get:
-Mario Kart Double Dash
-Super Smash Bros. Melee
-Ikaruga
-Cubivore
-Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Weird. That's certainly not the boxart the UK special edition wind waker that I had came in.any idea where that is from?

(Mine looked like this

edit: Huh, that blue version was apparently only sold at HMVs. Interesting.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
The indigo GameCube is the sexiest hardware ever. I typically prefer electronics to be black, but indigo just fit this machine so well — I can't envision it any other way.

Yeah that's the more common one. This one apparently was exclusive to HMV stores in the UK. I remember seeing them go for the price of the regular limited edition for some reason, but they seem to be really rare now.

My biggest gaming regret is trading in nearly my entire Gamecube library all in one shot. Must have been 40-50 games including Ikaruga and Skies of Arcadia Legends.

Never again. I still get sad whenever I think about it.

But that is just a cardboard sleeve, right? Or does the cover of the jewel case have the same artwork?

If you're collecting systems/accessories now is probably about as good as any to start collecting. If you're after games, you may be better off waiting till after E3 where we might here about GCN "virtual console". A GCN VC will drive down game costs quite nicely.

I still kick myself over trading in 4 mediocre games for my gamecube (Clone wars, Lost kingdoms and two I can't even remember vaguely), I couldn't even begin to imagine if I had traded in worthwhile games like Skies.

It's heartbreaking.

At least I still have GX and Melee. And Eternal Darkness.

Cool thread, I think there is no console that screams VIDEO GAMES better than the GameCube. The controller and the console itself are just so good-looking.

Bring back colorful consoles :(

1 out of my 11 GameCube games is Player's Choice (Metroid Prime), and its yellow spine taunts me from the shelf daily.
Should be easy to find a non players choice copy, no?

So gaf, I have the metroid prime trilogy sealed for wii. Should I open it up and play them? Keep them sealed and get the 3 games separate?

Nope. Get homebrew on your Wii and do this:

Boot automatically to a USB loader
Load GameCube games from USB, controlled using the GC controller.

NOTE: Devolution has DRM and has never been cracked. You must own the original game discs to use it. Please do not confuse it for a piracy enabler.

Whaaat?! Back then many people shunned the GC for its "too kiddy looks". :)

(They were wrong obviously. ;-))

How much of a piece of crap is this exactly?
I don't know, but I don't remember it being any good. Probably a software emulator compared to the GPB's hardware emulation.

Fun fact: the following GC discs have software emulation on them.

Animal Crossing (NES)
Fight Night Round 2 (SNES) (unconfirmed, but how else are they running Super Punch Out?)
Zelda OoT Master Quest (N64)
Zelda Collector's Edition (NES, N64)
Pokemon Box (GBA)
Naruto Collection (Japan, hard to find but not necessarily worth a lot of money) (GBA)

Then of course there's the Midway Arcade Treasures discs etc.

Another fun fact: Zelda Collector's Edition contains the full Wind Waker disc for the demo. People have corrupted it to start at the beginning of the full game. I think you can't collect items so you can't beat it, though. A hack could probably fix that but WW is around $20 so it's not worth anyone's time to investigate.

Love me some color on the console...disappointing that most stuff these days are black or white...at least the 3DS got some good colors going on, looking to pick up one and I got my eyes on either a red or blue one.
