Standard Definition = 720 horizontal pixels. Usually between 576 and 480 pixels vertically. So yes.
There's really no particular standard for horizontal resolution. 720 pixels/line is a fairly common number used by various standards and a lot of capture hardware. Some standards, like VGA, go for a square pixel grid, and thus use exactly 640x480 for 4:3 480-line video.

Oftentimes there isn't even any such thing as a pixel, as in the case of the old analogue TV standards. In that case, it's up to your TV manufacturer to decide how fast it wants to sample from the signal (in the case of SD CRTs with simple analogue signal filters, this is basically just the horizontal pixel count of the screen's phosphor mask). This results in some absolutely bizarre results on low-quality SD CRTs; usually video games look less aliased on lower resolution screens due to "free" supersampling (i.e. if you play Reach on a good 480-line display, you get 1152x720 downsampled to 480-line video), but with a low-quality CRT you could easily convince someone that a game is being rendered at a much lower resolution than it actually is. Not sure why you'd want to, but there you go.

Thank fuck for that, QTE's infuriated me in Halo 4, they just don't have a place in Halo.

The thing thats getting me about Halo currently, is that after reading through the two kilo five novels again and playing Halo 4, (I already knew this anyway but I'm getting to my point soon enough) and H4 reeks of Traviss' misinformed view of the Halo Universe. I'm waiting to see when they'll introduce her "childrenized" version of the Spartan III's, according to ghosts of Onyx and Halo Reach most Spartan III's were still hella tall for their age, just like the Spartan II's due to their Augmentations, and so after rereading glasslands I became incredibly more infuriated than I had been when it first game out, To read how she has Halsey say "They're too small" and describe Lucy as Tiny. This really annoyed me. Lucy is one of the older Spartan III's she's what 21? There is no way she'd be the size of a 12 year old with her augmentations.

But this raises the question for me, will we ever see Eric Nylund return to repair the Damage done by Traviss to the canon. I mean don't get me wrong I enjoy Kilo 5 so far. But the glaring canon issues are maddening, and she is literally the only Halo Author that I haven't been a fan of, even Dietz' book of Halo CE introduced the interesting Points of view of Silva's Marines and Jenkins' side story. But Traviss' stuff, aside from the ONI planning the destruction of the Sangheili is utterly wrong, and even saying that, the reasons behind the whole destruction of the sangheili plan is wrong. Parangosky says one thing and does another. She says she wants to put the Sangheili down to where they're no longer a threat, to prevent any genocide again. But then we're talking bioweapons to wipe out sangheili on sangheilios to prepare the planet for recolonization. Seriously Traviss should have read the previous Halo fiction to truly understand the nuances of the canon, instead of going in with a "fresh perspective" and completely oblivious to set in stone events and personalities. I mean the whole Halsey and Mendez thing made me cringe so often. Basically I'm just thinking out loud here, but does anyone think the Halo extended universe fiction can be saved by Nylund coming back, or Tobias Buckell?

The worst outright "damage" to the canon was perpetuated by Bungie themselves, who then basically hired Nylund to rationalize what they wrote that trashed his story. That to me feels like a dick move. Compared to that Traviss hasn't made Master Chief a 20-year old hipster with a knitted sweater and a fixie.

I enjoy Traviss' Halo stuff (haven't read any of her other work), but I do agree that her attitudes regarding the universes she writes for is... annoying. I appreciate wanting to bring something fresh, but her attitude towards ignoring the universe she writes for besides the basic notes tips the line to smug superiority in my book. At the very least I'd prefer that if she does that 343i keep a tight leash and make sure she's not introducing simple errors that are easy to fix. It happened plenty during Dietz and Nylund's books too, but now that you've got a true franchise overseer it's really not that defensible anymore. 343i raised the bar and expectations.

In my idea world, I'd assemble a Halo writer out of all the previous ones; I think I like Staten for pure prose, Nylund for the attention to detail and tech-fi feel, and Traviss for shaping her characters. Greg Bear is great, but I kind of like him lending an alien feel to anything ancient in the universe. I haven't really read enough Dietz to get a handle on him; I certainly don't think The Flood being boring in spots was his fault, he did what he was told, and livened up plenty of sections of the game (Keyes' death as seen in the CEA terminals is still one of the best moments in the series.)

They're not coming back.

I was weary of Traviss coming on board to write Halo lore since it was first announced. Actually, I wasn't just weary, I was upset. You can go back and find my posts about it from forever ago. I've always disliked her writing since it appeared in prominent video games (Gears of War). Honestly just awful, awful stuff. I knew from that moment on everything she touched in Halo was going to be fucked. And look where we are now. Any event that happens post-H3 feels like a colder, soulless alternate universe of the brutal, yet fun and full of character Halo I used to know.

Nylund is the best living sci-fi author. He brought the Halo extended universe to life, and he probably wouldn't like where it is now.

I agree with everything but the bolded. Neal Stephenson is alive and well. He's a Frank Herbert-tier sci fi writer, IMO. Check him out if you haven't. Especially the book Anathem.

the maps in halo 4 wouldn't suck if there weren't:

loadouts
flinch
ordnance

sprint? whatever, it's no big deal. jetpack and friends can die a fiery death.

I just got destroyed two games in a row in rumble pit by a guy with the carbine. He had laser precision with that thing.

I wish rumble pit pro had heavier weighting.

Removing those things isn't going to fix the bases in Solace or Exile. Maps like Complex and Vortex will still be a mess that have no flow to them. Abandon would still be terrible.

I like Haven and Longbow but everything else can be thrown away.

They wouldn't be great by any means... all I was saying is that they'd be a lot better.

Don't worry, we all saw you lose to Greenskull in that FFA.

Oh yea. I think that was the one where I was using all the weapons and shit.

I was definitely holding my own here though. Got a sweet overkill on Ninja, dropped a ton of kills a few times. Competitive for sure.

So much shit talking going on too. Loved it.

Stream was like 1.5hrs long. Only problem was bitrate and resolution. Mike Pagano, the video guy learned all of this new equipment in a short amount of time and really knocked it out the park. Also, he's an incredibly nice guy.

Well I'm sure he's a nice guy but the stream having terrible, horrible quality means the opposite of "knocking it out of the park"

Tashi's been contaminated and can no longer be trusted.

No like it's easy to sit from far and shit on the stream because of a bitrate/resolution issue (I'm not saying it sucks because it totally does) but I saw the prep for this thing with my own eyes and it's an insane amount of work. The live stream was certainly a highlight for me.

People from Arenagaming = get a quite good stream online for hours of the day.

Microsoft employees = shitty stream quality - 1,5 hours.
