Xbox One blocks used games. Offline Pass confirmed

Because it will require an internet connection to install all games.

You just won't need one to PLAY one you've installed already.
Player A connects online to install game
Player A gives/lends/sells game to Player B
Player B connects online to install game

How does MS deactivate Player A's copy if Player A stays offline after installing his copy?

I was thinking about the uninstall on the other console...

I suspect the console will be required to "check-in" every so often once you install a game. It'll probably have to check like one every 2 to 3 weeks or something like that. If you have the rights, it'll boot. If not, it'll deactivate. You might be able to "coast" on a sold copy for a little while.

But, of course, this is all speculation.

Update 2: Our man on the ground Tom Bramwell was able to speak to corporate vice president of Microsoft Phil Harrison about this hot-button issue and was able to confirm that a second user can install a game from a friend's disc for a fee, though it's unclear how much this will be. Harrison also confirmed that several users sharing a console can access the same game at no additional charge, and Microsoft has "a solution" for the resale market, though it's staying mum on those for now.

well...

Gamasutra.
The most amazing thing is that MS was unprepared for this. Any regular GAF reader could have told you that any whiff of changing the system for pre-owned/sharing would be met with a firestorm.

Why not have an airtight response ready right now? It's just inexplicable.

Precisely what i'm asking.

Also, Phil Harrison uttered the best sentence ever! "The disc contains all the bits and data on that game, which you can then give to your friend, and they can then install it on their Xbox One. No restriction on that, except that the second person obviously has to pay for it."

Yup, no restriction there then.

Well Microsoft.

Its been fun.

It's amazingly idiotic they seemingly don't have a company line on this after MONTHS of negative press. How did that Wired piece even go up without someone from MS checking every line?

Well, how many of you sold their used version of Angry Birds on their iPad?

Not saying it's a good thing, but for some reason only gamers are going crazy about it.

You're talking apples and oranges. A 99 cent game versus a $60 game. Angry Birds is an impulse buy. A Xbox game is not. Perhaps someone wants to try and make back some of that $60 and sells it for $30 on Craigslist. Is that person now screwed?

the internet does not contain enough lols to express how bad this is. Here is the update to consoles you have been waiting for. Hope the jump in graphics was worth it.

Does Microsoft even realize how big the userbase for used games are? Arguably that's where the majority of game sales exist.

What's a mom going to think when she buys her kid an Xbox and a bunch of used and old games with Banjo Kazooie, some old sports games, some old 360 games, and etc. that the kid had to wait till Christmas to get the thing only to find out he cannot play anything without having to pay a fee for it? That's a huge middle finger to their fanbase and will probably backfire on them quickly.

Forget it GAF, it's Chinatown.

So every game has to be installed? They won't play from the disc?
Correct.

Precisely what i'm asking.

Also, Phil Harrison uttered the best sentence ever! "The disc contains all the bits and data on that game, which you can then give to your friend, and they can then install it on their Xbox One. No restriction on that, except that the second person obviously has to pay for it."

Yes obviously if you lend your game to your friend, they have to pay for it.

This is where Microsoft is.

They're significantly changing the way we use used games. It sounds like every used game will have to be activated via a seperate fee, this is still major.

Online passes were one thing, cuz if i didnt want to play online i could still bopt up my used copy of madden and play solo. This wont be the case here.

But what if you don't connect your console to the internet, how will MS deactivate your account?

Right.

Buy an XBox One, amass a collection of games.

Oh crap, I'm really short on cash. Emergency!

Disconnect XBox One from the internet.

Sell entire collection.

Continue to play games offline.

I guess you would have committed the perfect crime... assuming you never install another game again.

Next time you logon to install a new game, it will update your licenses?

Okay so the Wired news is not true now...? jesus,I thought this rent/always online thing would finally be settled today but the whole vicious circle is still going lol...guess we will have to wait for E3 now lol...

it has to be, i read it as soon as it posted, no way they didn't have the insight to write all that up, etc without that info beforehand.....

Again like I stated it probably requires online to start a game not to continually play it.

So I'm trying to remember all the various words of advice to MS on how to kick ass with their conference I've read or watched over the past week.

From what I remember:

* Don't marginalize the gamer audience.
* Don't use too much marketing hyperbole or stick to empty terms like "experience".
* Be clear about always-online and services.

Zero for fucking three MS.

There is a fee and most likely gonna be a fee for used games, just not finalized since they are not talking about it

Uhm, yeah there is a fee if you share the game with a friend. Like you paid 60$ for the game and your friend can unlock it for 45$ and installs it from your disc. Not the worst case scenario because both can play the game.

On second hand games: you buy disc, it installs, you play from HD. Sell disc, it installs to new console and deactivates your install.

EG: The big thing that everything is concerned about is the Xbox One's attitude to second-hand gaming. I really want to try to get to the bottom of this issue before we talk about anything else.

Harrison: Okay, so, I can understand where some of the confusion may have come from, so let me try to help out there. First of all, you can buy a game on a disc from a retail store, come home and install it to your Xbox One. The disc contains all the bits and data on that game, which you can then give to your friend, and they can then install it on their Xbox One. No restriction on that, except that the second person obviously has to pay for it.

Obviously? I can now lend my copy of GTAIV to brother and he obviously will not pay for it

Do we need the disc to play the game? I dont mind losing used games if I can have a physical copy and still not have to get off my lazy ass to change discs.

This whole fucking thing is such a mess. It's like these fuckers don't know how to run a company. Nobody has even remotely tried to spin this as a positive.

So before people had to pay $10 to play a second hand game online. Now they have to pay $10 to play online or offline.

I don't see this radically affecting trade in value, and for people who don't buy second hand games like me we get a vastly superior service with all our games available digitally. Microsoft :bow

Gamasutra.
This will only accelerate the move away from single-player-only games. Besides, if you have to play online, then they can check whether your license is current. If you sold it to someone else, have a nice deactivation waiting for you. :(

This is exactly what I am wondering. This has to be some of the worst PR mishandling of an event I have ever seen. This is after the months of speculation that Microsoft let fester and the whole Adam Orth thing. It is just inconceivable that they didn't foresee this and at least have something prepared. It seems like their own people are confused about what is going on. Either that or they are just arguing semantics at this point about what "blocking used games" really means.

What makes you think the fee will be $10? In all likelihood it'll be closer to the full retail price of the game. There's no way it would be that cheap, otherwise one person would split the cost of the game between a dozen friends.

If my XBL games won't work on the XBOX One I will be pissed off.

XBLA? They won't work.

Also, they are saying that it is not a "pre-own block" because they are effectively deleting the term "pre-own". When you pay for a brand-new license for your own account, it will effectively be a brand-new copy of the game.

Was going to post this as well. It really doesn't change anything, like he's saying. If you don't have the physical disc, you can't play the game. Same as it is today. Still not buying one though.

Here's my take:

MS have partnered with Gamestop exclusively so that you can only trade in games with them. When you do so, Gamestop will use the disc to remove the license from your account, so they can resell it. When GS resell it, a portion of the sale goes to MS.

Edit: To those saying it only changes the license over upon new installation, that would mean that so long as it sits unsold on the shop shelf you could still play your game, this could be for years.

I cannot believe there is STILL no definitive answer.

The fact that Microsoft isn't trying harder to dispel this rumor -- which has been around for months now -- makes me think there is some truth to it.

They keep dancing around it.

Exactly, they knew people hate this.

If it wasnt true, they would have made a big deal out of it on stage.

There's no way it'll be higher than $10. I stake my credible NeoGAF reputation on it.
