So did MS play catch up with Sony and rushed a product out the door?

As of now there seems to be a lot of unthought out design decisions, misconceptions, and incorrect info about this thing coming out left and right. Does this really mean that MS was caught off guard by Sony and has rushed the Xbox One out the door. It just seems surprisingly sloppy and unfocused right now.

No, not at all. They're just aiming for very different goals with XBO and didn't communicate their game goals all that well.

I'm willing to bet the industrial design/branding was rushed a little, at the very least. They've been behind on software development for a while though, haven't they? Not much they could do about that, as evidenced by the lack of actual game announcements.

Sony did come out as a winner in this initial seek and hide match. I dont think MS has rushed anything but just Sony came much better prepared this time.

I don't think they were surprised by Sony. MS has been taking a more causal approach to gaming for the last couple of years with a more and more Kinect centered focus. It is what it is.

I don't really understand the whole TV thing though. You still need your cable box if I'm correct? That's like plugging a device in between your toaster and your outlet that also makes toast, or something in between your microwave and your outlet that also heats food.

90% of the threads about Xbox One are negative (citation needed), so I absolutely think they half-assed this entire process.

Or they are gonna show the games at E3? Unless I heard wrong or misunderstood them saying, "We are gonna show games at E3,"?

I think it was a massive miscalculation to think people would be happy with no games till E3. That's the reason we are getting all these practicality questions that were drowned out at the PS3 conference, they didn't give us anything else to talk about.

Goes to show you how far Sony have come, it really wasn't that long ago that you couldn't watch a Sony press conference with out some kind of high dosage caffeine pill. Today Microsoft made them look like Steve Jobs.

XBO, I started laughing uncontrollably at that for some reason. It makes sense though and also a hint of xbox 360 in it. The name of it is still weird to me though, not WiiU weird just a odd choice. They might as well have named 360 xbox 2 if they have no problem with having a lower number following their system.

Lmao. Who in their right mind would come to the Ops conclusion.....
Oh I don't know, the fact that they showed everything about a gaming console but the games, Major Nelson was picking fun at Sony for not showing their box but barely showed any games. And Remedy's and EA's games doesn't even count because they were live action and CG trailers. Most of the stuff the Xbox One has (UI, Interface, Kinect) were only stuff that were redesigned a little from the 360. We don't even know if the other IPs supposed to be revealed at E3 are going to be CG trailer either. Not to mention how some of the decisions for the box seem like they weren't thought through fully (the used game thing, Kinect required, games). It's getting a shit ton of bad press so I can logically see how someone could reach what I thought.

Edit: I'm not saying that MS designed it over a weekend guys! I don't know where you got that idea, I was just saying that their features and presentation seemed definitely underdeveloped compared to the Sony one!

Microsoft probably doesn't even see themselves in competition with Sony, certainly not the PS4. This is their hail mary against Apple, really; trying to get a slice of that massive entertainment pie and settling for a smaller slice of the gaming pie.

They told people a day or so before the conference not to expect many games, but to expect plenty of games at E3. Today was just about the reveal and pretty much nothing else.

And to answer the question, MS have been working on the One for the past 4 years, so I'm pretty sure they didn't rush anything.

Ill say this.

It blows my mind that they started thinking about this next gen years ago, and this is what they show?

All this time?

I just don't understand. What have you been doing in R&D for the last 5 years?

Someone answer me!

Microsoft want to be part of the living room, not as a toy but as a center. They are making ballsy decision that might alienate the current fanbase for a chance of that success.

I'm confused. They showed a system, a controller and a Kinect. They showed their new UI interface, and all of the features that *they* would spend in R+D for 5 years working on. What did you want? The games that will be shown in 20 days at E3?

This is their vision, man. This is the future.

What are you naming your fantasy football league btw

I don't think that's it, because they had very different talks. Sony sent a lot of time pitching to devs because of lots of problems in the last generation. Then they focused on the games because they needed to show that off. MS didn't need to do that. They pitched to the off gamer crowd (mostly) because they feel like they have the gamers locked up. The continuing COD partnership is proof of that. They did well this generation and it looks like straight ahead for them.

This, oddly enough, is exactly what Sony did for the ps3.... But I don't think XB1 is going to have the rejection factor.

It could turn out great, they had some things ready, but it was obvious it was rushed when they came out to show the Halo tv show, and they had nothing, the background was prehalo 4 stuff...

I don't think they are playing catch-up. They knew their vision and stuck to it. You're just seeing what that is now. I do think they done fucked up though.

What is the living room question, or problem, that MS is answering with this reveal today?
Personally, I know microsoft is in no position to reorganize your living room based on their expertise. They aren't trend setters. Even if Apple released this identical product, people would have the same lukewarm response.

The TV solutions microsoft is answering, are already answered, streamlined, and used by children at this point its so damned simple. There is no physical hub anymore, people are connected to their computer/entertainment lifestyles, and enjoy them wherever they arrive.

Living room skyping..? I mean.. who was needing the features MS announced today, as feasible, current, products don't allow you to easily to any of it.

edit;

and we all know its going to come with a fee. On top of the fees you're already paying for in your streamlined life. 500 dollars to do this, or 400 does not seem worth it.

If anything, it's more likely the other way around. Sony caught wind of MS's strategy and decided to go in the opposite direction by making a consumer and developer friendly gaming console. This is what happens when the MS corporate folks (non-gaming industry) gets hold of the console business. Most of MS sucks when it comes to hardware.

I dont think it was rushed to be honest. Ive still got hopes for Microsoft. But the thing is, to alot of people first impressions count. This event was televised everywhere. I think they needed to focus a little on showing off what the system could do in terms of gaming.
