Soooo used games are a last gen feature?

I've spend thousands on games but I wouldn't even have the hobby if people hadn't lent me games when I was younger, sad news.

Seeing as all major EA games will undoubtedly be on PS4 also, and EA just eliminated their online passes...

I think we can all put 2 and 2 together here.

If Sony leaves it up to publishers, I just won't purchase games from that publisher (I don't buy games from EA right now anyways).

If they go full into this like MS is, I'm out.

"offline pass" LMAO!!!
so in the future if I replace my Xbone but Microsoft has shut down the servers, and has moved on to the Xbox Two or whatever, then all my discs will be useless coasters cuz I can't buy the "codes" that I was never going to in the first place. This is as bad as "digital distribution" in my eyes.
Somethingsomething flip a switch something something.

Microsoft just shot themselves in the foot.

I don’t know how much the rest of you know about the gaming culture (I’m an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It’s not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over world wide, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the gaming public all over the world, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase the Xbox One, nor will they purchase any of Microsofts other games. This is HUGE (like Xbox). You can laugh all you want, but Microsoft has alienated an entire market with this move.

Microsoft, publicly apologize and make those second hand games playable on other people's consoles or you can kiss your business goodbye.

This thread is now complete.

Do you guys think Steam is anti-consumer?

This is the way things have been going for years. I don't get the big deal. Trading in physical media is going to be dead before you know it.

This argument is so tired. When Microsoft proves us all wrong and sells games for as cheap as PC DD services do, you can use this line of reasoning. Take a look at the horrible horrible prices on Xbox Games on Demand if you want a glimpse into the future.

There is miles and miles of daylight between what MS wants to do and what Steam *is*.

Attaching a game to single account does not make something into Steam.

God, can people please stop being so reductive?

Multiplayer on steam is free. There is mod support. Its a marketplace for all kinds of games, not just Valve. Games are backwards compatible. Games are cheap, and on sale often. Tell me how the Xbox One's environment is anything like this.

This basically kill used game and rentals right ? If renting games doesn't work on your system then no buy.

I keep praying Sony has no part of this and I can at least have one next gen system. If not its wiiu and PC

i don't really lend or borrow games, so whatever. but this is something that is going to eventually happen with all future consoles. not surprised at all.

If this is real......smh.

Sony can win this gen by announcing at E3 that used games work no problem....before the gen even launches.

This is un-fucking-believable.

MS should make it so silver accounts have to wait 1 week/month for the game registration to go through. Think of how much money they would make on gold subscriptions.

Here's the thing though. If I go over to a friend's house, I can log into steam and download my games and play them on his PC. I can't do that with the XBone (I love that name).

The bigger deal seems to me that i have to enter a key for a console game. I thought one of the benefits of consoles was that you could just put the disc in and play. Now i have to type in a cd key?

Forgive me if this has been discussed, I'm reading from my phone and this thread keeps ballooning.

I just read this on the official Xbox One FAQ.

So it seems it will play used games, but not sure how or if MS is going to limit it somehow.

As I said earlier, this probably refers to the "fee" for activating a used game.

Why not? Have you never seen retail games on sale in a store?
Not to that extent, no. You can get old software or the occasional super bomba at that price. No royalties for one thing. I never pay more than 15 bucks for a Steam game due to this reason (I do make some exceptions for devs I want to support right away like TWI for instance).

Seriously, we are not comparing equal things here.

One is an open platform, for starters.

Sony will go down that route eventually. Even Nintendo, if they are still alive. This is the crappy future.

Ha ha, that Update 2 is a real groin kicker.

Offline pass eh?
Yeah, I think I'll pass.

Interesting to see if this is even a talking point amongst consumers.

This doesn't appear to be complicated. I'm not sure why everyone is so confused and angry.

Based on what they are saying (officially), this sounds analogous to PC software. You can go buy it on a disc (but who does that?), and it comes with an activation key which you type in once and you never need the discs again. Its worked for PC's, why not a console?

So that alone would eliminate the used game market entirely. What use is a "used disc" when you need to pay the full fee to buy the license to use it? Might as well have just downloaded it (which is now what most people do with PC software).

But they say they have a solution that allows people to trade games online, and we don't know what that is yet. So I wouldn't grab pitchforks yet. There have been rumors of online game trading on Steam and people got all excited about it - that could be realized here.

I think the biggest kicker is that apparently you can't borrow a friend's copy, or rent a copy from Gamefly and play the game without installing it. So far, we're just hearing that you could "use" that disc to install to your own HD, but you'd still need to pay full price for the game. The only advantage to doing it this way is that installing from a disc is faster than downloading.

Some people think maybe they'll charge a fee for a temporary use of a friend's copy of a game, or to "activate" a rented game to be able to play it for a limited time. But why limit charging a rental fee to the supply of physical discs? Why not just do what iTunes (and other services) do with movies? Give people a complete digital copy of the game, and let them play it for a limited time. When that time expires, you can't play the game anymore.

There are a lot of possibilities. Some are good. Some could be bad depending on your situation. The way you buy and play games in this new generation is certainly going to be different, and probably closer to what you are used to dealing with on a PC. That's a change some may not like, but its inevitable.

Here's the thing though. If I go over to a friend's house, I can log into steam and download my games and play them on his PC. I can't do that with the XBone (I love that name).
We don't know that yet. He said if you play from a friend's account, you have to pay. The only obvious assumption here, unless he was being weaselly, was if you logged into your account you could download/install and play your game.

I don't get why friends is the first place people go to with someone borrowing games.

Is everyone on GAF an only child? This sucks for families that have more than one system

They don't need to release games cheap digitally because games will always price collapse in retail. You'll still get cheap retail games.
