Xbox One is REQUIRED to be online at least once every 24 hours.

So, is better than what was rumored (constant connection) and far worse than online activation which happens only once

Well, thank god they did not show Alan Wake 2, any JRPGs or Fable 4, because i would have to buy the system then :)

Eurogamer: Does the console always need to be connected to the internet?

Shuhei Yoshida: You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected. The system has the low-power mode - I don't know the official term - that the main system is shut down but the subsystem is awake. Downloading or updating or you can wake it up using either the tablet, smartphone or PS Vita.

Eurogamer: Are all of those things optional? For people who have broadband data limits, for example? They can customise everything?

Shuhei Yoshida: Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.

Lol @ people trying to mince Yoshida's words. They clarified all the always online fears:

(hint: they never even considered it)

This man was right.
They fired him for telling people in advance and spilling the beans.

So, I am in college... awesome.
In the summer, I take trips to a cabin with no internet... awesome.
Considering how the 360 blew up on college campuses, this seems like an insane move.

What a shitty move. While I have a stable internet connection, I don't want to have it hooked up to it all the time so it can prevent me from playing games borrowed from a friend or load up a bunch of ads. I also have family members that have an unstable internet connection or no internet at all. Guess they are shit out of luck if their kids want to get XBox One.

Well, looks like MS is going to be spending their E3 conference saving face.

At least they have that opportunity now, imagine if this WAS their E3? Though seeing the mess they;ve made of this, having already had a taste of what the reaction would be to a lot of this information, it hardly bodes well for them putting things right.

How can a company be so out of touch with it's consumer base? Did they do any research, did they actually ask anyone what they wanted/don't want from the next-gen?

I cant imagine the shitstorm from families that cant get their new xbox one to work because of their internet during the holidays.

Literally a dozen posts up. :p
The Forbes article?

Because this is what I read when I followed the link in that piece to Gamespot:

Sony president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, said that a constant Internet connection would not be required from users, given the differences in web services available across the globe.

“Did we consider it? No, we didn’t consider it," said Yoshida. "The main reason being that many countries don’t have robust Internet connections. It makes sense for people to have Internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw [that] do not really have robust Internet.”
That doesn't necessarily mean that there may not be 24 hour checks, or similar.

It's unfortunate for people with no Internet connections, sure.

They just won't buy the console.

A large group of people I know who come to Japan bring their Xbox/PS3 with them to keep them entertained after work, especially early after arrival because they have no internet - as it can take up to a month to set up here.

You don't have to go overseas to find a lack of internet access.

Exchange students? Volunteering? Totally could be in an internet-less environment.

Almost nothing works on Live if you live overseas, so it's not just lack of internet access. I'm in Japan, internet connection is not a plroblem. Most of the tv/app stuff on Live is region blocked, so it's useless here. X1 seems like just more of things I can't use.

Every fucking rumor was true.

Every fucking one. And someone most of them ended up being even worse than they seemed.

True, but now every gaffer will boycott this box of garbage.

only fanboys and casual will buy this thing /trollface

So this all means that if you don't have internet, you can't even fucking play anything? Please correct me if I'm wrong, and my apologies for being a moron if I am.

How does one explain this to Gim-gam when she goes to buy one for little Timmy at Christmas?

What happens when it isn't explained and the console stops working after a day?

Yes. This will be a PR disaster at that point.

Microsoft has just announced Xbox One Blue.

Basically we are pretending to be generous and understanding by pretending a service pack is a gift to you.

It has been confirmed that there is no online requirement.

More like its not a system wide feature built in. Publishers can implement that shit if they want but that is entirely different then DRM thats built into the console that is mandatory.

We were talking about "trips". I not really out overseas employment as a "trip". Trip implies recreation.

It's unfortunate for people with no Internet connections, sure.
Me and a bunch of friends have a beach house we rent near the end of every year and take a trip down to for a week or so which has zero internet connection outside of 3G for our phones. Whereas I normally bring my Wii and 360 along with me in case it rains and for the evenings, an Xbox One would be completely bricked if I took it with me in this circumstance.

Really curious what sort of environments/living arrangements the people not seeing an issue with always needing some sort of internet connection 'always ready' are in.

I would probably be completely okay with anything Microsoft implemented, no matter how goofy or ineffective.

This aspect of the Xbox One is a slap in the face to anyone who ever thought that gaming was truly something for everyone.

Making it so some people can't play based on a factor that has nothing to do with the fact that they purchased the console and games is so far below the area of considered decision making.

Whoever buys the Xbox 1 is considered trolling.

Joking aside, as a Xbox fan, it pains to see MS go this route. Why would they do that? For what purpose? How can they do that to the fans?

Update:

If you miss your 24 hour connection, you must pack your Xbox into a coffin and ship it to Microsoft so they can confirm you are not a lousy ,stinking, pirate, thief.

So if your friend registers the disc you give him and he pays the full price for it does it then get removed from your console? Is that why there is a 24 hour limit? So it forces that game off your console? I don't understand why anyone would ever buy a used disc and then also pay $60 for the license. Is this a way to pay lip service to being able to sell your discs or something? No one would ever fucking buy one though. This just seems like a result of tying a single unique code to every disc. Why even bother with that? Just require the console to be online the first time you activate a game (like it already is).
