Geoff Keighley: PS4 Used Game DRM (EDIT: but now apparently on hold)

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Is this another thing where someone remembers the tech Sony patented, chinese whispers that into "I heard some stuff" and then filters that all back out of their anus as the concerned comments?

I fucking hope so. Who is reading the internet this week and saying "hmmm, seems like consumers are super ready to get fucked!!"

It's obvious that Sony would do this. The used game restrictions are a dream come true for the big publishers so it would only make sense that Sony do this to be on an equal playing field with Microsoft. Also, love seeing the tin-foil hats coming out saying the sources are Microsoft.

Again, I don't see a big deal with this and it certainly won't push me to a PC only future.

Not sure how leaving it up to the third parties makes it any better. It will still kill the used games market. There will be no place for you to trade in your first party games.

Not in the least bit shocked if Sony does this. In fact, I think they took the lesser road by sidestepping the issue over the last few months with no definitive answer. Microsoft attempted to rip the band-aid and and now has to clean the wound.

Wonder if it'll be across the board, no exceptions or Sony providing the tools on a system level to implement checks and leaving the choice to publishers.

Doritos Pope with the subtle FUD. Not surprising.

I have a feeling this is the case. Either this or some gross interpretation of the online pass system already present this generation.

That said, if it does exist in the same manner as Microsofts, im done. Ill double down on current gen and retro. Not going to pay into this bullshit.

Here's what was actually said:

I can play my Steam games without an internet connection as well. However, installing my new game requires it. I suspect Sony will do the same.
We can take it a step further and say I can go totally offline on Xbone too, just (presumably) for 23 hours out of a day.

Well, I guess if it's true, and very restrictive, I'll be continuing with moving over to GOG for now. It's too bad.

There is no way that Sony will not offer it and EA will take it (this being the reason that EA got rid of the online pass and the Wii U). Otherwise Sony will be in trouble with EA and Activision.

Though I hope Sony makes it optional and they don't use it for Sony published games. And publishers like XSeed and NISA as well (I hope Atlus does as well, but seeing P4Arena I am doubtful).

A console with no bc and used game sounds terible to me, particularly when the exclusives limeup is looking fairly weak

I'll wait for e3 before i decide one way or the other

If true it's a huge missed opportunity for Sony. With the right pricing and more consumer friendly policies they'd be positioned as the defacto choice for "next gen" gamers. If they go down a more restrictive path similar to Microsoft it'll be good news for Nintendo, with the Wii U suddenly looking more attractive by the minute in spite of the issues that have plagued it so far. This year's E3 is going to be very instructive. It's hard to tell which way the wind will blow once everything is officially unveiled.

Gamers in Japan must be worried about all these rumors. I expected the console market to get better there this generation, not killed off entirely. I guess handhelds will have an even greater dominance there now.

Hell yes. Trusting Sony and MS to solely dictate value among games is just fucking stupid stupid. We have decades of proof they wont be consumer friendly or at least in the same league as the PC. The close nature of consoles is a completely different business model. IF you think the console market will adjust game value the same as the pc with these 2 companies at the helm, you are kidding yourself. I never buy used games, but I still benefit from price pressure the 2nd hand market brings. With that gone, all we have is the incompetence of MS and Sony to contract the market.

iOS is closed but prices are EXTREMELY competitive (moreso than Steam) because publishers are free to adjust price on the fly and there's no influence from physical stores threatening to take away retail shelf space.

Would a publisher opt not to do this?

Does it help a game through word of mouth - perhaps it would affect sequels?

Maybe we'll see more down the line, I doubt too early on.

You know with the online-passes this gen with Sony, was that only available for first-party titles?

Leaving it up to 3rd parties would allow Sony to preserve their own image.

Exactly. Why would I deal with an xbone/ps4 future of drm crap when I can have a pc, deal with the drm and have a huge catalog of games to play that I can buy from steam sales?

It's a no brainer.

So what if both PSN and XBL have more Steam like sales next-gen?

Both have experimented with it this gen with great success. There was an XBL Ultimate sale earlier this year that had a huge response on Gaf. They had some games/DLC equal to or cheaper than it was on Steam even. Sony also has permanent discounts on a lot of their content for PS+ subscribers (on top of offering free games monthly, better than what Steam offers).

I can see both Sony and MS offering permanent discounts to subscribers of their systems, as well as providing more regular sales and other promotions. If they think it will translate into more money, and at the same time make customers happy because they feel they are getting great value for their money, then why would they not do it?

I'm sure some, especially the smaller publishers or developers like CD Projekt, will opt out of this system. However, whether that will translate to a noticeable increase in sales or not remains to be seen. I would lean towards "no". At the end of the day, if the game is awesome, people will pay good money for it. If this was the case then GOG would be the premiere digital store on PC and not Steam, which has DRM.

Personally the used game situation was the least of my issues with the Xbone, the always online DRM, and the damn camera are worse in my opinion, so this still is not as bad as the Xbone. Still if Sony pulls this shit to ill finally have my reason to build a solid PC and be done with both of them. Its sad because i love Sonys games, but if they are going to pull this shit and try to strip consumers of their rights then they can burn too.

..how is it not the same? I've gamed on PC my whole life and we've had CD keys and non-transferrable digital licenses for years and years. The used PC game market was killed a long time ago by the same sort of tactics.

That is just blatantly wrong. The PC's open/laissez faire system invites the kind of competition that you wont see with pricing structures in the console market. The same tactics were not used on the PC market, that is just wrong. Yes, there are publishers who have used systems that make the 2nd hand market impossible, but for 1 the PC market never had a real 2nd hand market to begin with, so market value was handled completely different by the market. When Steam came around with their DD the PC market was in a fairly large glut, with very little game growth. The competition that Steam introduced with other DD companies following suit creates its own kind of free market value adjustment.

Sony and MS systems are closed and they will not be experiencing the same market pressures to adjust value to their games. You will be literally at the mercy of Sony and Microsoft.

This would be a terrible move by Sony for reasons people have already stated.

What I'm wondering is if these DRM moves by Sony and Microsoft, have directly led to the minuscule third party support for the WiiU (along with the weaker hardware of course). I highly doubt Nintendo would budge, on such an important feature, from any of the big publishers leading to bad relations even further. Hmmm just speculation by my part.

And they seemed to be doing everything right this time around. I really hope this isn't true otherwise I may just have to skip out on this horrible new generation of gaming.

I love how most of the replies in this thread are acting like this is official word from Sony.

I'm waiting for an official announcement. This has been PR HELL for MS ever since word got out. I wouldn't be surprised if they scrapped their plans.

I believe Sony said if they did this it would left to the publisher just like region locking.

Wish an insider would at least drop a hint on this. Shit has gotten way off base since the MS fiasco.

With this being said. WE should all tweet Yoshida and tell him not to do this.

Well fuck, it's probably mainly Wii U/3DS/Vita/PC for me. I hope he's wrong, but we hoped the same for the X1 and look what happened there.
